Every car sold in America in the early 80"s included a device known as the "air pump." The purpose if this device was to pump un-combusted air from the atmosphere into the engine exhaust stream. This brought the vehicle into compliance with the parts-per-million standard while reducing the actual parts-per-mile pollution output by nothing.

To think that competition between companies, unfettered by oversight and unrestrained by regulation, would some how magically lead to a more just world is about as delusional as thinking that the rivalry between burglars will lead to a home owner's wellbeing.

Some capitalists are honest and understand who drives the market. Socialist are mostly in denial about their own greed.
@rustinusti
@rustinusti 3 года назад
Russ Chancellor Your comment makes literally no sense. A person who is "honest about who runs the market" is not a capitalist: they are a socialist. Capitalism is based on the illusion that a handful of capital owners is necessary to run a market. This has been proven untrue through the massive success of both worker co-ops and union action. The greed of the bourgeoisie is strong, but the proletarian are strong. Without the proletariat, the bourgeois are nothing: the basis of Marxian socialism. *Socialists* know who drives the market: it's the workers. For this reason, they want the workers to benefit most from their own labor. That is not greed, it is justice and equality.

RR I am union and have been union most of my life. Greed and corruption is just as prevalent in socialist ideology. Capitalist understand human nature and capitalize on it. The smart phone and personal computers are but two examples.
@rustinusti
@rustinusti 3 года назад
@@MrDangeruss1 I explained to you how greed is endemic to capitalism, not socialism. You simply stating "socialists are greedy, capitalists are understanding" doesn't make it true. By definition, it is _not_ true. If you were in a union, you wouldn't be saying these things. A union member, at least one who takes the union seriously, recognizes that capitalism is a greedy and corrupt system and that it must be combatted. That is *literally* the function of unions.

He made me think about the work place where we spend so much of our life. Often the colleagues are not friends and so you are surrounded by people who try to behave like "we are all one family" but in fact more likely most couldn't care less. Perhaps someday, you walk into your office and they gave it somebody else without warning you first. They think they don't need to inform "the lower staff". Perhaps there is a bully around and the chef looks away or even joins the fun. If there is as prof. Wolff says, really a rotation inside co-ops then, all these sick situations will solve automatically. Millions of people will remain healthy and won't age prematurely.

I used to believe in unfettered capitalism. I grew up in Unionized America 1960s & 70s. I cannot describe how truly wonderful the U.S. was then. •••Then stupidly, i bought the propaganda ( William Buckley, Milton Freidman )and voted against my own self interests. For Reaganism. Now in hindsight, I contrast this U.S and the Unionized U.S of 1979. Psychologically, spiritually, monetarily, the U.S. is a cesspool in 2020. Hideously deformed and predatory. For me REAGANISM was almost an instantaneous reduction of wages and healthcare 1983....it got worse from then on. I was a foolish boomer. I was lied to. I was manipulated.

Wouldn't the best profit motivator be: to have the largest sustainable population to sell to? Peoples health and security are important for population growth. It's in big businesses best interest to make sure they have a large, healthy customer base with extra spending cash. America used to know this before China stepped in

Thank you Prof, I absolutely agree and have thought about this for some time. The constant race for profit has surely caused more harm than good. We should aim for a more balanced goal with less profit... Taking more care to produce better, safer, higher quality products and paying higher wages. Then maybe capitalism could work. But of course it can't do that because the people in charge only care about their precious profits.

profit doesn't matter by itself. who profits is what matters. political discussion is usually fruitless, as it tends to be a wishlist from powerless people. aristotle gave the matter some thought, and said the first business of politics is to establish 'who decides.' i like that idea, clear and simple. 'who decides,' in your nation? unless you are swiss, it's not the people. what about elections? that is merely modern civil war, non-violent, usually, but decides nothing but who shall be dictator, or county sheriff. they have referendum and initiative in california, and it would be a democracy if independent. why don't they leave?

Can someone help me clarify things? I'm sympathetic to socialism as a solution to capitalism's shortcomings and I want a more democratic workplace and world. However, let's say we transition to a socialist-type economy with cooperatives and self employed individuals in a market. How would socialism prevent this from happening? Do we require central planning? How does that avoid authoritarianism under a bureaucracy? Do we allow for "market based" socialism but with profits going to the workers directly? How do we avoid the same issues while striving for a larger market share?

Capitalism is the most efficient system in meeting people’s needs and desires. It does better than any controlled economy could ever possibly do as seen in the Communist countries. The examples mentioned here are defects of a capitalistic economy so there needs to be rules and regulations to mitigate those defects.

"Its either capitalism, or soviet communism" False dichotomy. Ever heard of market socialism, aka workplace democracy? Let me explain it with a quick example: Jack the jackass owns some machines to turn wood into chairs, and some raw wood. Jack the jackass stares at the wood all day, and shouts 'entrepreneurial spirit" and "innovation" at it, but it still does not turn itself into chairs. So Jack the jackass hires Bob and others to operate the machines. It takes Bob one hour to make one chair. Bob is paid $15 an hour, yet each chair sells for $50, and the wood is only worth $5 on its own. Well then, where's the other $30 of value come from and where does it go? Bob added $45 of value with his labor, but only got $15. Jack the jackass kept the other $30, despite doing no work, just owning stuff. Jack the jackass also keeps the surplus value from all the other workers. Thing is that the workers don't need Jack the jackass, they could own the machines together, and compete with other firms all the same. No central planning needed, no abandoning the market, just abandoning capitalism. Markets are not exclusive to capitalism, hunter gatherer societies had them, feudalism had them, capitalism has them, and a modern socialism has them.

Conclusions around the actuality of "Progress" entirely depends upon the timescale you use to evaluate such claims. The planet is on fire, and workers see and viscerally feel the elitist are captains of a metaphorical Titanic.. If we can try to stay grounded, its easy to see that 20th century history of elitist rule is one case of industrial malpractice after another (as Prof Wolff touches upon during this lecture) ..dotted with episodes of gross covert mad science experimentation by global complex of intelligence agencies and corporate think tanks... Everything about the elitist faith in disruptive technology and innovation has largely been bad for us (workers / the poor / regular people) if you actually honestly interrogate the damage done.. So you have no good reason to defend capitalism... You don't owe this ideology anything.. Renouncing it and fighting against it is what you owe the young, your ancestors your kin..

Bad example. I have zero anxiety about toxic hand sanitizers, as do I imagine most Americans. The problem with capitalism isn't that the profit motive incentivizes grift - that is present in all economic systems. The problem with capitalism is that it demands non-stop growth of the human population and consumption.

The profit motive, is the strongest force in economics. Making more money may mean adding 10 billion to Bezos's wealth, but it also means food and basic shelter for the working poor. China before Deng Xiaoping suppressed the profit motive and millions starved. Yes the persuit of profits can lead to bad outcomes, and wealth inequality is by far the worst in the US than in any other country. But guide and harness the profit motive, don't do what China did before Deng.

This is a dead on criticism of Capitalism. It wouldn't be fair to say the profit motive is the root of the problem; but it's obviously a very serious problem. Applying Game Theory in reform can help to promote cooperation; but the only time it's feasible is a window of time around a crisis.
@42Mrgreenman
@42Mrgreenman 3 года назад
Game theory works when the rules are followed, it seems to me that the lack of legitimate oversight is the root issue...but that takes time, and in a system where time is money, legit oversight is hard to come by...
@GraphicsGarage
@GraphicsGarage 3 года назад
@@42Mrgreenman The current methods use financial incentives; that are too simplistic, and don't focus on cooperation. The value of using game theory in reform is making the rules systemic. The reason for failure is forcing businesses to produce quarterly returns in all conditions. That's a great expectation; thus it incentivizes cheating. A game theoretical model isn't just a written rule set. It's one that actually punishes cheating; in some way, as opposed to promoting it in desperate situations. A system that forces growth in all conditions is one that works against nature itself; and it's existed since the Neolithic. Tribalism became Nationalism; which became Imperialism, which is now our greatest existential threat. That's nature's game.

The profit incentive isn’t exclusively a part of capitalism people in the government profit through power and control co ops still would rely on profit to run and the workers would still be motivated by the idea of profit Or spending and using less resources than value they sell products for The incentive to gain will not go away with the abolition of private property or it would only shift to other possibly less helpful parts of society The idea that a corporation would cut corners or falsely advertise a product is not an exclusively capitalist issue either The government falsely advertised The affordable care act the military industrial complex fueled by taxpayer money purposely over spends to hand out as many defense contracts to friends as possible fueling the war machine This government fueled behavior has destroyed the lives of millions You can guarantee yourselves that these defense agencies wouldn’t be able to afford these bullshit wars without taxpayer money if anything it’s the purifying mechanisms of completion profit incentivized journalism profit incentivized quality control and consumer choice are mainly capitalist structure that prevent and punish this type of behavior

Wolff lies. Those are not failures of profit motives. Those are of our, the consumers, preferences for faster/cheaper/shinier things and easier solutions. And the failure of the governments to alleviate our reluctance to think a bit forward/harder. And of those voters, that elected the government(us again?). Profit motives just don't make us better. Should they?
