Disclaimer: The pictures used by the scammer in this video are not the actual person that Cynthia was in contact with. These people that have their images stolen are victims, too.
In this episode of Scamfish, Cynthia tells a story about her long-distance relationship with a romance scammer who said he was a retired pilot. Cynthia & her husband were married for 25 years & built a beautiful home with her husband in Florida with plans to start retirement together. They both fled to Boston after they were both diagnosed with Cancer. Her husband has diagnosed with stage 4 glioblastoma & she was his caretaker while she still was dealing with breast cancer. After the tragic death of her husband dying to Brain Cancer, she turned to online dating to find companionship. She met a handsome man named Glenn Perry Hoffman on eHarmony & she fell in love with his photos on his profile. The plot became thicker when he started to ask Cynthia for money to help fund his Car Exporting business & get out of being stuck in Brazil. Cynthia would do anything to get Glenn out of Brazil she started to send him large amounts of money. She would go onto mortgage her house twice, max her credit cards, wipe out her 401k & even borrowed money from her Boss from work. She would do anything to get her long-distance lover out of Brazil & back to the United States. These are true stories used to help spread awareness of these terrible situations people are put in.
These people are survivors, not victims.

No amount of loneliness could make a sane woman send her life savings to a text message.
@GadisBaliLivesAbroad
@GadisBaliLivesAbroad 2 месяца назад
The thing is, loneliness during old age hits differently. I say this from my personal observations caring for elderly people here in the states. If someone has a close relationship with supportive and loving family members who care for them on a daily basis, it will be easier for them to feel content and not desperate looking for love or companionship in the wrong places aka being scammed. Many people, especially young people think that there is no way they will be easily scammed in the future when they are old, however they forget, we humans constantly change and aging is real. Many suffer from cognitive decline that may not look obvious from the eyes of outsiders. The reality is if you live long enough, you will see your family members, acquaintances, and friends pass this world, one by one, life can be extremely lonely at that stage, especially if someone doesn't have any family members who care for them. Elderly abuse is rampant. Elderly people need to be protected. In addition, for elderly people who have gone through very stressful events in their life, it will be easier for them to believe people who will tell them what they want to hear, even if that's only for money. Human brains are amazing and in the survival mode can easily convince someone that red flags are green flags.

Intelligent women handing over their life savings? Seriously stay single if the only way you can get a man is through buying them and still end up single. Would they walk down the street and give a stranger thousands of pounds? No they wouldn't so why do it to a person online who they have no clue who they are talking to? I get these all the time and you can spot them a mile off, 2 friends, pics of puppies, pics of kids, pics of flowers, pics of religious effergies. My story is very similar to hers. Married for 25 years, husband died of cancer etc. My first encounter with a scammer was from a group I was in on FB. I knew right away, just from the broken english, that he was not the guy in the picture lol. Since then, I've probably encountered 50 or so in the last 4 years, and I haven't found one to be "smooth". Not one! Unfortunately, she chose not to see all the red flags, because I guarantee they were all there. I hate it when people say "It can happen to anyone." No, no it can't. These scammers target a specific demographic who are more vulnerable and susceptible to falling for their tactics. They target people who show signs of being lonely, desperate, gullible, or all of the above. These are typically recently widowed people, older folks struggling with finding love, average or below average looking people wanting to date out of their league. The victims always lack self-awareness and are disconnected from reality, otherwise, they would not fall victim to these sorts of scams. They are the types that wouldn't even question why an overseas man 20 years their junior with lots of money and six pack abs would be attracted to an overweight retired grandma living in the Midwest. The scammers get away with it because they play on these people's delusions. "Once he completes his $14 million oil rig contract off the coast of Brazil, he's going to pay me back the $50,000 I lent him and we're gonna live happily ever after." So wait, you've been engaged to someone you've been talking to online for 9 months and have never met? "We haven't video chatted yet because he's on a secret mission in Russia and we haven't met yet because he got arrested in Yemen for not declaring gemstones to customs when he was flying back home."

I think the, "It can happen to anybody," applies more to the idea that anyone can happen to be born into a body/personality combo that happens to be somebody who's gullible in this way. My ex-husband had me buy a lot of expensive stereo equipment, and furniture on my credit card. A few months later I found out he had a girlfriend that he was "attached" to but he said not like me. He would not come home some nights. I called a moving company and made arrangements to move everything out while he was at work. I kept the credit card receipts in my hand in case police were summoned. It worked out smoothly. I was stuck paying for things I didn't especially want, but at least he didn't get away with swindling me and cheating on me.

What I noticed, is that vast majority of victims state that they are "very, very smart" and "educated", and "vigilant", and "cautious" and all this stuff, but obviously they see themselves in the wrong way. I totally undestand, that the victim can get caught by a scammer in a deeply broken emotional state or distress, but it let's be honest - right at that moment everyone is "a dummy". EVERYONE! So there is no need to be so much proud of your intelligence, it's just a matter of time and right moment to give it all up. Alas.

She had a very hard patch. Missed her hubby so. We think we are through making mistakes.

Online dating can be difficult for the uninitiated. Some basic rules to avoid time wasters and scammers: 1. If there is any reason for a meeting in person to be some way off such as the person being in a far flung part of the world, walk away. 2. If a meeting in person doesn’t happen soon after starting conversation, it probably never will. I think that two refusals/excuses is a good rule of thumb. 3. When chatting online don’t get overly emotionally drawn in. Just talk about the kind of person you are and what you’re looking for - and then either meet in person or not. 4. See “online dating” as a phrase, not a reality. Actual dating only happens in person - and if that isn’t happening, stop contact.

The Corona virus has given scammers a good excuse not to meet in person hasn't it?

The stories these scammers tell are just ludicrous, I don't know how they can believe them.

I have heard a lot of stories where these women still believe that they are helping someone out genuinely but something about her story actually made me feel pretty bad for her because deep down she knew but was lacking for so long, she just gave in.
