Cmon dummies - it’s because of 50/50 revenue split - if buyouts don’t count against cap salaries go way over 50%, escrow spikes, players would have to pay back like half their contract in escrow

The reason buyouts need a cap penalty is to prevent teams from lowering cap hits artificially. For example a team could pay a player a 8 million times 5 year contract or they could do a 8 year contract with 5 mill aav, but still pay all the money up front than buy the player out after 5 years. It's blatant cap circumvention. An alternative is to have the cap hit be equal to how much the player actually makes a year and not flat over the length of the contract.

Huge Star Wars fan here and I can tell you that a large majority of fans don’t think Last Jedi is great. A lot of fans are disappointed with the lack of direction in the sequel trilogy. Go leafs!
They were going to face cap problems with the contracts regardless of the buyouts. Guerin also faced an issue with the expansion draft (as they both had NMC’s). Also like Steve said, rich teams would absolutely abuse buying out players similar to the NBA if they were able to just buy them out with no penalties.
is it just me or have Adam's opinions surrounding the NHL/NHLPA changed greatly since doing a show with Allan Walsh? The whole discussion on buyouts and penalties sounded like callers to Sports radio. You have to look at the reasons on both sides for and against these rules.
If you're going to watch Star Wars, you should do Machete order. 4, 5, 2, 3, 6, then 1. After that you can do the other ones. It sets things up in an awesome way. If you search Star Wars machete order, the guy that came up with it has a great blog post going over it.
The reason why the new series have been good is because #1 they have the same creative team running the story from start to finish and #2 the creative team actually cares about what they're creating and care about the lore of what came before. The sequels had Kathleen Kennedy meddling too much making sure they threw in a bunch of "inclusive" characters that only had one trait (to be inclusive) and consistently had changes and meddling in the overall story.

(Besides get cancer out of the lokcer room and protect better players from Seattle) Suter and Parise were scheduled to make $6m each this past year, then $2m next year and $1m each of the final two years. With all the aches and pains and $100m in the bank, you don't think there's a high probability of retiring rather than take that money? I can't find the exact number for recapture if they had retired with those contracts active, but it potentially dwarfed what the buyout hit is.

Luke died because he overexerted himself. He used all of his energy to help save the resistance. Now it’s not in defense of the movie, but it’s not surprising he died projecting across the galaxy. Like that’s the least problematic thing with that movie
Read Star Wars books, they are amazing. There is a trilogy (i do not remember the name of the books, one was "the last command") - amazing, if they had made these stories into movies in the 90s or so with the original cast of Star Wars - pure insanity. Instead, we got anakin 5yo driving a hoverthingie in Episode I and other undignified things.
Centers are quite literally the least of our problems. Our goal-tending is questionable with Cal having a bad year last season after signing a big extension. We don't have any high tier prospects in that position and Quick is on the last year of his deal and in his mid 30's. Winger scoring needed help and adding Fiala solves that. Now we have 3 what should be 30 goal scorers in Kempe, Arvidsson and Fiala. Our RD is stacked for the future with Doughty, Brandt Clarke, Durzi, Helge Grans, Sean Walker, Matt Roy, Spence and others. Our Centers are stacked for the future with way to many prospects and three of the best defensive centers in the NHL in Iafallo, Kopitar and Danault. Danault and Kopi can give you offense as well. Byfield will get a full year of NHL action hopefully take that huge next step. Our two issues right now and for the future are LD and goal-tending.
Also you absolutely cannot have Danault as the third-line center. His skills are way to good to waste them. The entire main reason he came to L.A was to be able to play big minutes and step up in the play I.E be offensive and not just defensive. Iafallo is our perfect third-line shutdown guy. His offense is inconsistent but his defense is elite.

Biggest issue with the sequel trilogy is what Adam said. They should of just have all 3 movies to one guy. Whether it be Abrams, Johnson or Trevarrow. Just seemed liked nobody talked about the over arching story. I actually like Last Jedi more then most, just because how different it felt from most Star Wars properties. But that movie really felt like it was tossing aside what Abrams built up in TFA. Then instead of building off of what Johnson left behind, Abrams came back and tried to right the ship back to his original idea (mixed in with some of Trevarrow’s script) and it failed horribly. I would love to watch Star Wars movies done by any of these guys, but without any outside interference. Let them do the movies they wanna do, and no hand it off to another guy who may not share the same vision or direction.
Adam, the reason these contracts weren't grandfathered in the CBA, I am convinced, is because Bettman wanted to punish Minnesota and he could see this day coming. And on that point I agree with him, this penalty is a deterrent to future GMs who want to be stupid.
Steve, regarding Duncan Keith, the league decided if he retires Edmonton is not getting a cap credit. They did NOT say Chicago would be off the hook for cap recapture of all those years his cap number was artificially low.
Watch Star Wars in the order they were released for sure! Except feel free to skip the sequels. They should be erased completely. Horrible. Only watch if you’re interested in seeing just how bad it can get. I think the prequels get too much hate, attack of the clones maybe deserves some of it but phantom menace and revenge of the sith are underrated. I really enjoyed rogue 1 and the kenobi series.

Rob Blake just set market value for ppg players on rfa/ufa around their prime. The pacific division is full of those players and the teams that need to pay are cap strapped. This deal seems like a double whammy. Very shrewd play here by Blake.
