In this Part 1 video wood carving a bluegill bream I'll be carving the blank and shaping the fins.
In Part 2 I'll be detailing the fins, head and gill detail.
This is only the second bluegill I've carved.
The first one I carved was the second ever fish I carved and it was my first RU-vid video I posted.
So we'll see how far I've come when we see the difference between that one and this one when I finish.
If you have any questions feel free to drop me an email or leave them in the comment section. I hope you will enjoy this project and if you do please subscribe and hit that thumbs up button.

Match easier to draw the centerline before you start rounding, to keep the line visual and in the same place, make little pinpoints that way you always stay in center !

I normally always do on bigger pieces but I usually don’t have any problems keeping the center line on smaller projects like this. But you are right.

Yes, for the most part. I also used a couple off brand bits and several diamond bits.

Do you usually use Tupelo for fish? Also, do you describe in any of your videos how you do the nostrils ?

Yeah I use Tueplo exclusively now. The last rainbow trout and the brown trout I just finished I’m pretty sure I show doing the nostrils. I can’t remember if I talked through it. I do know I inadvertently did the nostrils on the brown backwards. As you probably know On both sides of the head there are two openings that are slightly different shape and sizes. On the brown and rainbow the front hole is a little bigger and kinda bean shaped. And did it backwards 😖 If I had caught it before I painted it I would have filled it with wood putty and re carved them. But since I had already painted it I just left it. But I look at it as a learning experience and I guarantee I won’t make that mistake again 😜

Danny is there a secret to putting new sandpaper in those padded sanding drums? I’ve struggled with those for years. Thanks and still hope to meet you someday. Barry Johnson. Piggott Arkansas

Yeah sorry I don’t know any secrets I still struggle with it occasionally. I know cutting the exact size Is a big help. I’ve got some small half inch by 3/4 long that are even harder. I think the brand of emery cloth makes a difference. Mine came with emery cloth preloaded and had a couple pre cut pieces. I bought a couple rolls and it’s not as flexible as what came with it and is harder to replace. Luckily they last a while. I may try buying a different brand and see if it’s a little more flexible. It has to be cloth backed also. I tried using sand paper and it just comes off.

Hi Danny, Where are you getting your patterns from?
@Danny_Harris-Arts
@Danny_Harris-Arts 10 месяцев назад
I draw some of my own and I have a friend I met on FB a couple years ago that sent me copies of ones he’s accumulated over the years, I scanned and digitized them so I can print them what ever size I need. I drew the pattern for This bluegill project. I have another friend that just sent me 15-20 digital copies from Ed Walicki. You can find his pattern book on fishcarver.com
