Little bit late to the party. Also a carver beginner here. Learning by doing with help of RU-vid and great people that share their knowledge by making videos. I watched tons of them You certainly standout. Very relaxed, slow explanation of every step. Your template is explained the way you drew it. All distances, points, everything everything is mention. That is of enormous importance to a beginner like myself. Thank you very much and please keep up the good work

Greetings to Sunni and thank you for reminding Jack permanently. By the way, super video quality. I'm seeing V gouge as a useful tool and many carvers seems to shame them. Seems to be a advantage to drawing lines to separate different areas from getting cut wrong looking like something I'll be sure to do. IttyBilly cute name. Thanks for helping me and others

I have had to glue several pieces back into place, noses, feet, tails etc all part of the fun😉 also with faces do not worry too much about symmetry, check in the mirror you have two different faces.

Thank you. U dun good. Nice to see the Stanley 199 being used. One thing that will improve cutting performance is to remember to strop even new blades before using just like any other carving knife. Touch the blade up on a strop every so often.
@whittling
@whittling 3 года назад
Thanks! Yes, I like the Stanley. I like bourbon as well. I've experimented with a variety of utility blades and I agree with you, stropping improves the performance. Thanks for taking the time to post a comment, I really appreciate it!
@finebourbon

Great choice in utility blades. Lenox blades allow for easy adjustment of blade stick out without having to modify knife body. Looking forward to your next project. Thankyou again. I'm not telling you something new, but it is a good pallet for beginners to get useful info.
@whittling
@whittling 3 года назад
@finebourbon Thank you sir. Appreciate you taking the time to share some thoughts with me and the other readers of these comments. The Lennox blades are more expensive and I think they're worth the extra cost. I feel a kinship to my carving cousins and I want to help beginners to experience success, gain confidence, and become lifelong learners.

I know this is an older video but quality does not age 😊. I really am a beginner and have not felt I can accomplish what I have seen in many tutorials but this one is different. The information, advice and encouragement packed into this tutorial has had me digging out a 1x1 basswood spindle and I have just finished pencilling out the layout ready to start carving later today when I will have a bit of time to absorb myself into creating this great little character. Many thanks 🙏

Hey, Im from Danmark I would like to se you carve some other Wood than basswood. Its not Easy to get basswood over here. I once ordered some peaces, but it was much to hard. - do not know why. So please show some other types of Wood . I really like your little films. Best regards from denmark. Esben.
@whittling
@whittling 2 года назад
Hello Esben! Thanks for your suggestion. I just recently posted a video of a carving out of Butternut wood which is also known as white walnut. When I first started carving I used only red cedar. I understand many carvers in Europe use Lime or Linden wood. What type of wood is available to you?
