many questions about the glues. Rocker and Woodcraft both sell the CA glue and at different thicknesses, from real thin to very thick. The thin will penetrate the wood very well. Some over the counter super glues are not as well suited for this. That is possibly the reason for the white haze, as well as too much moisture in the wood. These CA glues are what pen turners use, and they can be used to build a very fine and durable finish.
Don't need the giveaway just wanted to say that it's great to find someone that makes great videos. They are very entertaining and thought provoking. Thank you for taking the time.
Love the video. Can't wait to make my first ring. I work with Cyanoacrylate at work. It uses moisture in the air to cure. The more moisture the faster it cures. And when it cures quickly it gets cloudy or white. Wet sanding could only make this worse. To avoid cloudiness make sure it is thoroughly dry and not humid.
Hi! Love the channel you have and the super simple and straightforward way you explain everything. I love my crafts but am totally new to woodworking and I think these rings will be a perfect starter as I don't need any specialist wood tools or loads of space, just crafty things! I also want to say what a wonderful thing it is that you produce full plans and guides free of charge all your projects.
I've really enjoyed these ring videos. My husband actually made me a wood ring for my engagement ring--though he cut the veneer and made up his whole process as he went along. It was the best ring ever--so light and comfortable to wear. These videos have made me want to try making some myself, this time with inlays. Thanks for the inspiration!
I know that I'm a couple years too late, but this video really helped. I've never made a ring as yet, but I've also been watching Patrick Adair & he uses a relatively new product called Alumi-UV. It gives a mirror finish inside the ring and outside as well. I have used veneer on a couple of guitars I have made. I have found that if a veneer starts to splinter when you bend it, flip it over. If you look carefully at the grain you can see the difference. And finally, I also have 5 kids. After the fourth one was born we figured out what was causing it, so we bought a TV. After the fifth one was born, we decided that we should plug it in & turn it on ! Sorry this comment has been too long. Sometimes I can't help myself. Thanks again for the great video. Jim
I've been using the Fastcap thin CA glue, which has been working great. And to polish I've been using some micro mesh sanding sheets ranging from 1500 to 12000 grit, which has given a wonderful shine with the CA glue finish.
Its pretty neat to see a youtuber as involved with their community as you are. And it seems like you try to read every comment you can. I tried making a wood ring but I couldn't find a veneer that I could get to bend but after this video I'm going to revisit this project and see if I have better luck.
+RiseCityGoals It must have been just a tough cut of wood that you tried. Do you know what species it was? I do read nearly every comment. You viewers are great and I like the tips that are shared with me.
Very cool video. Can't wait to see how the variety pack works. The brass powder gives me some ideas for projects. Although currently I'm wanting to do stone inlay. Have you done any of that before?
Awesome Follow up Video! I had the same issue you did with finding the super glue and I ended up getting the same loctite from Lowes after viewing all of them. I've been doing them in the garage and they are turning white, but I think it is because the day I did them it was raining out and the humidity was high in the garage that day. Keep up the great work.
+Jesse Moran I just purchased some "Bob Smith 103 Insta-Cure 2oz Super Thin" off of Amazon. It looks like it will work great and I will try it in the next ring video. Does the white come back after you wipe or sand it?
HappyAtom I was able to get it to disappear after I sanded it down with an 80 grit and then go higher from there then polish it again. My issue that I am having is that I can't seem to master of getting the edges to bevel and I can see the edges of the wood around the edge. I can't seem to figure out a way to get it to look like a nice ring on the sides. I think I got down the tops and the inside part (I just have to move faster with the glue :) ).
+Viper678 Productions I have a slightly distant family member who lives in England and is a great woodworker. I'll try and contact him and see if he knows where to get it.
That was me about using the edging & peeling off the glue. After boiling it you should be able to pull it away and it comes off in a single piece. Doesnt always work perfectly though.
+HappyAtom They did, took a bit of fiddle around with soak timing, etc to get the glue off easily as well as rolling but the end product was basically the same. Only thing i had issues with was getting the brass to shine but i solved that with some higher grade sandpaper.
I couldn't find the Loctite 420 glue anywhere! I haven't had a chance to make the ring yet with the ring package I won yet because I haven't found the right kind of glue yet with a liquid consistency. Glad you made this video with glue substitutes!
+Jenny L. I really had no idea that it was a hard to find glue when I bought it. I looked on their website and I don't see it so I guess they may have stopped making it.
Dyed veneer is usually tulip- I think that's how it's spelt, sequence matched means it was cut from one tree and is next sliced piece, bookmatching is when the grain is flipped sequenced veneer allows you to book match veneer not very useful for dyed veneer though
Also I used a pyrography pen to burn a spiral pattern I guess you could do it with a name, I didn't really try to make a decent ring tho because my fingers are so small getting the timber to bend was a nightmare.
+HappyAtom yeah I'm 95% sure they are the same thing, I use a wire tipped one which people call pyrography pens another type is soldering iron types which aren't as good
Just watched your video my wife saw it, so I thought I would give you a shout out, like the video's you have done.i have never made a ring out of veneer.i was wanting to get into making coin rings, that looks very cool.my question is do you think popular wood is good to make a ring out of.i have made a ring out of a piece of wood I don't know what kind it is I just took a piece of wood that was in the Garage 1" inch thick 4" x 4" square Then took a hole saw the smallest one I had cut it out and just took my drill with a socket and attached it with some black electrical tape. Took some rough sand paper got it down to the outside of the size my wife liked then took 220 sand paper to smooth it down, then sanded the inner side down to where she could get it on then again the 220 to smooth it down on the inside.has really cool grain lines , then too dark stain and after I was done cleaning it up the grain lines jut popped.but I don't no if I should spray it with polyurethane or what. What do you think I should use to make it shine like a baby's behind. Thanks Soulreaver
Hi HappyAtom loving all the videos and will be trying out several of the projects though living uk in U.K. does have it problems with some of the sourcing of some of the items needed though with help from amazon uk and eBay I've managed to find most. My question at this time however is do you know whether balsa or basswood veneer 1/32" would be suitable to use, as checked your wood PDF guide and it wasn't mentioned there thanks so much in advance, keep up the excellent videos and love the fact you seem like a major Zelda fan just like myself.
Hello from N. Carolina USA. I live about an hour away from Sauers Veneer. I have not tried making rings out of it yet but mainly use these veneers for Marquetry ( Making pictures using the different natural colors of wood.
Hi Adam! Thanks for showing my rings in your video! The 3rd ring that i did, i applied a really thick layer of cyanoacrylate glue so that i completely seals the wood, then i sanded and polish the cyanoacrylate glue layer. That way, the wood is completely sealed from the glue and will be waterproof as well as shiny as the whole outer layer can be polished without it getting into the grains of the wood.
For the coating on top, i used the gel type, its called super glue in my area. Because it's slightly thicker consistency, you can build thicker layers easier than the runny kind.
I’m a day late and a dollar short ... well looks like 2 years late... love the vainer rings... can’t wait to see the lazier engraver you just opened. Thanks for your shows
Love the videos I can't wait to start on my own. Is it possible to lay the brass in a band around the ring using the powder easily? and is there a good protective finish that would bring out the blacker woods but keep the brass looking shiny.
I think it wouldn't be too hard to put brass around the ring, I may try it. I would try the glue as a finish, if it fails sand it and use a hard spray finish.
I know it’s been a while but I’m just getting into some different styles of wood working do you have any type of guide for what size sockets make what size rings??
I took 3 years of Woodshop back in High School, and I sucked at it (don't know why, I took my time but always ended up way behind :( ) but I like the idea of making stuff. I enjoy watching you make stuff, keep it up. :)
hmm... quasi interesting... Did you know that you can find enough gold to make one of the triforce rings in some old electronics? I found a piece of gold in an old VHS camcorder. It's not a lot, probably enough to sell for a few bucks, but in the days before gold became insanely expensive they used to use it in some high end electronics as it's a great conductor. I found my VHS camcorder at an electronics Goodwill. It was $5, and I'm using the viewer to make an IR scope.
I had a quick question about the metal powders. I don't know how much you know about ceramics or clay - but do you think you could use those powders to do a similar inlay in clay? You might not know, which is fine! Just thought I'd ask! I sent off an email a bit ago with some ceramics I've done that could be made even cooler with metal inlay!
Thank you for these videos, after watching the last video I went out and bought the supplies and went to work , now all my friends one. Thanks again for the the videos!!
thanks for your videos i like your projects i already made the wooden sword for my little brother, and i want to make some of your other projects thanks again
Have you tried using varnish as a finishing coat? I'm wondering if it would provide the clear, shiny finish you want without trying to keep it out of the wood fibre
Great videos. I've watched a few of them about the rings. Who knew that veneer could be so useful in jewelry? I'm actually waiting on delivery of a laser engraver like the one you use from Banggood. Keep up the good work
I've just found your videos today, and I totally want to try making some of these rings. I also saw the video where you use the laser engraver. Do you think it would work to use a wood burning engraver to burn out the design, and then put the brass powder in that?
Takes no work to get the adhesive of of the edge banding. Stuck it in boiling water like normal. It'll come right off. Wasn't sure myself till I tried. U can sand it off too but that's too hard. Just boil it off.
wasnt able to find the email address but im in rexburg and get down that way now and then. wood rings just splinter on me. but ill try a copper inlay or copper ring and then glue over it. thank you for the videos your awesome and doing a great job. as a side note i love the laser engraver i teach lost wax casting and have started using one to etch the inside of rings.
Hi Atom I love you video I was just wondering what brand belt sander do you have. I would like to buy one and I liked how yours was hand held and it could lay flat. I could not find any that would lay flat. Thank XD
Good morning. :) I have just stumbled across your fantastic videos and I have to say I cannot get enough. Thank you for the q&a it answered a lot of questions and was very informative! especially as I did have a lot of trouble sourcing veneers here in Australia. I have done my first attempt at veneering a ring and it went a lot better than expected, but I did find that out of the five types of wood I tried only one bent reasonably well. I believe that this is due to a combination of a short grain as well as a slightly thinner veneer. I noticed that the ones that splintered as I was trying to roll (after boiling for an hour still) were actually up to 0.3mm thicker than the one that actually rolled well. I need to experiment some more but do you think could this be a cause for failed bending? I will send you through an email with some examples of what I'm talking about :). I am looking forward to making my way through all of your videos!
+Michelle Paterson I wonder why veneer is so hard to come by. Do you know the names of the wood you had trouble with and what one worked? Welcome to the channel Michelle! I am glad you enjoy the videos.
+HappyAtom Its not hard to find large sheets of veneer that they use in furniture production, just the small sheets maybe because there is not much market for them? Not sure. With the veneers I tried to use the Jarrah is the one that worked the least, it folded and splintered terribly. The silky oak was not quite so bad but still cracked and splintered in a lot of places, might be able to get a ring out of it though, will have to see. The Quilted Murtle worked reasonably well with a little bit of splintering along one edge but that should sand off but it also did not roll as smoothly leaving a couple of cracks. The Hoop Pine worked fantastically and the Queensland Walnut is the one I am currently making a ring from, it worked well, but not as well as the Hoop Pine. I will send you some pictures of depicting all these aspects when I get back from Uni tonight.
Hi, been trying to send you some pictures of my wood rings with stone and metal enhancements but cannot find a good email address to use. What do you recommend??
+chilliman07 Every time I edit the description in the video youtube cuts off any hyperlink in it. It's really annoying. Thanks for letting me know. Here is the link! drive.google.com/file/d/0B7AMdaWaDWWzWGJVVmVkMlRiSDg/view?pageId=113455172833745822513
hello atom is the id veneer wood good for making rings? are they long enough? what other pack would you recomend? i want to order from them but it would be dumb to order wrong :p thank you
Hey! Ive been watching your videos for a while and I have to say, awesome work! I couldnt help but notice you said you attended Salt Lake Comic Con... Is that implying that you live in Utah??? I live in northern Utah and it would be cool to get ahold of you and maybe talk a bit! I am an amateur prop maker and it would be cool to hear some of your tips and tricks with wood working. Thanks! Stay Awesome!
Awesome contest and good luck to the winners. I would enter but I don't yet have the tools required to make anything with wood. :P I create other things with clay, resin, jewelry findings etc. though and sell them so I can save the money to buy a starter lathe etc. I hear you about the noisy kids. I have just one but he can be loud enough for 3 most of the time. :p - Heidi
+BlackCat2 Hedi you can still enter. It does not need to be a wood creation. Anything you feel like you want to show off. Clay, resin and jewelry are great!
Hola buenos días usted seria tan amable y daría el curso por escrito pata poderlo traducir, pues es mucha la inducción y no se ingles, le agradezco mucho de Colombia. Hello good morning you would be so kind and give the course written to translate it, because the induction is very much and I do not know English, I thank you very much from Colombia.
Good Evening HappyAtom! Thank you so much for this video, it answered most of my questions I was having. I can't wait for your veneer video that demonstrates the GOOD woods to use for rings. I too am having issues with splitting and in ability to roll, IE: Purple Heart Wood.
