To properly replace a wood stove door gasket, you will need appropriately sized replacement gasket material and a tube of black gasket cement. This video shows how to determine the correct gasket size you will need. Stove Door Gasketing and gasket cement can be purchased from RUTLAND Products either individually or in kits at Rutland.com.

The directions on the kit I bought yesterday didn't have good instructions-it was the Rutland brand. As my internet was out, I couldn't access these instructions.....the gasket cement was thick as tar & would not come out of the tube, despite my kneading. Then a blast of it came out and made huge mess. I had to return it today, and exchanged it for the cement sold separately from the gasket replacement. I'm about to do this process again- - it is my STRONG recommendation that you print on your product labels this video to view. Now I know I will get it right - because if I just followed the instructions, I wouldn't have thought of the masking tape to hold it in place - also - on your packages it says nothing about trimming the excess and cementing the ends together. It would've been another disaster had I not thought to google how to do this PROPERLY.

After following these instructions and so much previous trouble with defective tar-thick cement, I replaced the kit and had a successful outcome!

Nice that your package directions don't mention wetting gasket and channel

Lorrie, you may have found or purchased a product with older packaging - I just checked our updated label and it does indeed indicate that you should lightly dampen the gasket and the gasket channel. Our apologies for any confusion, however we are working to clarify all instructions on updated labels.

My package said to dampen gasket, but said nothing about cutting the excess and cementing it together or exactly how to heat seal the gasket/cement. Plus, the cement in the kit was like frozen tar and defective - had to replace it today with buying the gasket/cement separately to ensure I didn't get another defective tube!!! And my house is freezing as I've had to go two days without heat!

The gasket channel is rusted on my old Vermont Castings Large Winterwarm insert's damper (I waited too long to replace the old gasket, and it was completely gone). I've cleaned the channel of old cement, etc. Should I paint it with Rutland Hi-temp paint first? If so, does that paint need to be cured with heat before cementing new gasket in place?

For surface preparation, the gasket channel only needs to be cleaned of any loose material, and does not need to be painted before gasket installation. Also, our paint does not require a heat cure, but does benefit from one.

Do you leave the door open or closed and latched during the fire curing part of the process?
@rutlandproducts5587
@rutlandproducts5587 Год назад
When performing the heat cure, please ensure that the oven door is closed and latched tightly to prevent heat from escaping the stove.

If I do this is the summer, if it sits, it will eventually cure won’t it??

Hello! This cement will not cure properly without a heat cure. We would recommend waiting until closer to the burn season to make this repair. If you have any additional questions, feel free to give us a call at 800-544-1307!

is it a problem to use a larger size rope?
@rutlandproducts5587
@rutlandproducts5587 Год назад
Sometimes it is a problem, it really depends on your stove the size of your gasket. Installing an oversized or undersized gasket is something that requires some common sense and potentially trial-and-error. There is a scenario where the gasket is so thick that it keeps the stove door from closing, and if the gasket is too slender, then it won't effectively seal the door. These are problems that you want to avoid.

What about for a pellet stove ? As far as curing goes.
@rutlandproducts5587
@rutlandproducts5587 3 года назад
Hi Robert -- great question! For pellet stoves, we recommend using our High Heat Silicone Sealant (available in 500°F RTV or 600°F RTV) instead of the gasket cement. Pellet stoves don't get hot enough to heat cure the gasket cement correctly, but the silicone sealants will not require a heat cure. They cure in 24 hours at room temperature. If you have any further questions, please give us a call at 800-544-1307 or email us at sales@rutland.com. Thanks!

Gorrilla glue?
@rutlandproducts5587

If you're using an adhesive or cement that doesn't have high enough temperature rating, then it will certainly lose its tensile strength, become extremely brittle, and will lose all adhesion within a short amount of time. This is due to a process called thermal expansion.
