I never realized that Sycamore got that large in diameter. You did a great job. There was one thing that I wish you had done differently. Instead of gouging out a ton of chips of wood, I wish you had used a Bowl Cutter instead. That way not only would you have had the depression you needed cut out, but you would have had an additional blank for another project as well. Also, would really love to see your daughter in one of the intros. Maybe even choreograph something with both of you in it. She sounds like she is an absolute treasure.

I think sycamore blanks this size are quite rare, especially one without cracks. I would love a bowl cutter/saver but they are very expensive . It was on my list to Santa but he seems to have forgotten.

Wow, what a bowl! Funnily enough, I have a piece of sycamore waiting for me to turn so that my wife can do some pyrography on - it's only been waiting for nearly a year as I've been too busy at work to get to the lathe!
@JimsonMakes
@JimsonMakes 3 года назад
Thank you Justin, Sycamore is great for pyrography, just sand it to a very fine finish first and don’t apply finish till afterwards. The end grain burns slightly differently to the side grain.

Hi Jim I just re-turned a bowl after copying your "Greek" Milliput theme. I can't wait to sand and finish it. It's the first time I've used Milliput and it won't be the last. I have a Nova Galaxy with the outrigger system also. I use it a lot. I have a blank chucked up on the Galaxy now that is 28" x 4" all ready and waiting for my choice of Milliput colors. I'm originally from Durham and moved to Vancouver, Canada over 30 years ago. We are spoiled for lumber here. I have mostly Maple, Cherry and Ash. I'm constantly stopping and picking up large logs that are everywhere here. I'll send you a biggy when I find a nice piece. It'll probably be Maple as it is much lighter than Cherry and Ash in terms of weight when dry. I really enjoy your videos and your enchanting presentation. Looking forward to future vids. Take care in these dangerous times. It seems the old country is suffering badly. Cheers Yuval

Well, that turned out a beautiful and epic sized piece! The pyrography design looked well worth all the time you spent on it...bet it seemed an endless journey around that circumference several times, drawing, outlining, and filling in the pattern. Nice touch adding the detail burn around the carved recess tidy up, tied in nicely. Have to go back and watch it again now. Hope you and your family enjoy a decent festive break despite the way Covid is flaring up alarmingly over there. If all continues to go well, we will have a pretty much unrestricted summer break here in NZ...though always just a case or two away from an outbreak spreading in our population too. Stay safe and well Mr Overton 🙂

Fantastic work bud. Nice example of the Record power’s capability, did you have any trouble with burnt bits smearing across with the YG ?
@JimsonMakes

Thanks Chey. The Regent lathe certainly has loads of power, I realised half way through that I wasn’t even using the lowest belt ratio. I was expecting some smearing but got none, possibly helped by the spray sanding sealer.

My husband is interested in getting into wood running. He only has a small shed 6x4 foot ish. Apart from the lathe what does he need as a real beginner kit? I see other turners with loads of gadgets, 10+ gouges etc bandsaws, sanding machines etc.obviously he will collect gadgets as he improves as a wood turner. For training & making mistakes & “ unique” items what do you suggest.?

I would suggest getting a good quality set of starter tools from one of the well known company (cheap ones aren’t worth bothering with), you will also need a sharpening machine ( I use the Sorby Proedge). A dust extractor is strongly recommended and a safety visor and respirator mask are also essential . The best thing would be to get some lessons from a professional and see if he likes it and they will be able to advise on the best purchases. Also essential to get some lessons on safety as it can be dangerous .

I wonder how long it took you with the burner and how you managed to hole it right to put on the spindle. By the way do you exchange stickers?

It took at least 3 hours to burn the design. I used a centre finder to mount it. I have currently run out of stickers. Many thanks for watching .

Thank you very much Dawn. The Regent lathe will turn bowls up to 39 inches in diameter and approximately 5 inches deep. I make my own pyrography tips. Merry Christmas

@@dawnmason9558 there are some good videos on RU-vid showing how to make tips, you just need to buy the correct gauge of nickel chrome wire

Thanks Alan, No I just use the outrigger which is incredibly sturdy, just takes a bit of time to position the outrigger and tool rest into the optimal position.
