In this video I make a bud vase from offcut burl scrap. These are very popular and are fun and easy to make. This video like most in the project that sell series is done in real time with basic tools that a beginner would have. Things did stray from the plan as sometimes happens to everyone. Please watch till the end to see what goes on with this piece and to get info on an upcoming charity auction for the Salvation army where 11 makers will be donating work that you could win! Link to more details below. I hope you enjoy this video, thank you to all who watch!

There’s nothing more satisfying or maddening then turning wood burl. I’ve not made much with it yet myself. Some pistol grips and a small vase, with having the grain go in 4011 different directions, it’s near impossible to have a straight plan off attack when you turn it. The fact that you got such beautiful results from such a crazy piece shows your skill level is on another level. Really nice work sir.

Very worthwhile point that you make on not throwing small offcuts from good wood because they can be used for small, highly successful pieces further on. It was also great that you show that problems do crop up even for experience wood turners & took the time to show the great effect of the Danish Oil finish with the bug holes. Love the look of the hollow form that you made for the auction, I will now watch that one. Cheers, Don from South Aust.

Solid demo, Lewis. Today I tackled the brother to a willow bowl I'd tried last year. It was a live edge mess, in which I put 14 hours of sanding. That's not an exaggeration. The thing was a beast for tear out. My sharpening skills weren't bad, but they are better, today. That, and my ability to read grain. I had to do a bit of unconventional work, but off the tool to 180 grit, one tiny spot of tear out. Opposite side of the tree, totally different result. I appreciate your way of explaining your methods and why. Those mistakes and explanations from you best RU-vidrs are a big part of why today's result was tremendously better, so, thank you.
@TheKlondikeCraftsman
@TheKlondikeCraftsman 2 года назад
That is excellent! I always shoot to get a 150-180 equivalent finish off the tool. Sometimes it doesn’t work and there is not a thing you can do, other times it is successful. I’m glad you aren’t having to sand as much! Thanks for watching!
@jayscott306

@@TheKlondikeCraftsman Had a chuck of cherry with an unexpected erratic burl today, but cooperated and it was a shocking 240, for one miniscule line. Ten minutes to sand and polish. Beautiful, thanks for sharing. I would have fixed it. (That's what I do, fix things.) Put a dowel down the neck wrapped in packing tape, fill the crack with epoxy with black die in it, extract the dowel, and return the outside. By the time you did all that you could sell it for enough to earn about half of minimum wage, if you ignore the cost of the wood and epoxy.

I enjoyed seeing the simple project, sorry that the beautiful burl didn't make it. I would like to see a demo on a deeper hollowed out vase of about 10" but I don't know about the time it would take. I have vibration problems when hollowing out and try to use a steady rest that I made, with out much help in the vibration. I have a piece of Iron wood, 10 1/4" wide and 8" thick. Having a difficult time shaping it and hollowing it out for a bowl, the wood is so hard.
@TheKlondikeCraftsman
@TheKlondikeCraftsman 2 года назад
Thank you Eric! 10” is very deep to hollow without a mounted hollowing system unless there is enough opening to get a tool rest inside. I have a video where I did a sumac vase that I hollowed to the max limit with the Easywood pro series hollower and it is touchy that deep. When I say to the max I mean past the suggested dept and handle deep. Thanks for watching!

Love the video Lewis! Your little dry pot "whoopsie" reminded me of my own mishap when I made my mother a knitting needle pot from a nice piece of cherry. You're exactly right when you said you have to pay attention to the path the grain of wood takes on! My problem was a dullish Forstner bit and too thin of a neck. Bit took a catch, and me bearing down on it, split the neck and a quarter of the needle pot! "Whoopsie!" Lol. A little reshaping and a newly sharpened bit, and everything turned out perfect for her pot. Now I just need to make her 2-3 yarn bowls and Mamma will be a happy woman indeed! Question: What type of oil/finish did you coat your dry pot in? I'm always fascinated with what types of oil/finishes other turners use and prefere. Thank you so much for the video. If it were just a split yes but it was a blow out an not repairable.

That was going beautifully! I know I would have been tempted to glue it, but who knows how that would have turned out. Nice job regardless. Good success with the auction! Cheers, Rick

Hi Lewis, What a terrible shame. As Valerie mentioned it is too good to toss away. I'm sure you will think of a way to finish it into something else. Take care Lewis. Cheers, Huw

Great looking piece. Is it possible I could send you some photos of my work thru email. I would like to get some feedback. I have had some friends tell me I should sell them but I would like some turners like yourself take a look at them and give me your opinion if you don't mind. Thanks

That is a lovely piece of burl Lewis. Will you take the neck off of it, and make something smaller, such as an ornament? Or, cast it in resin for another project?

@Youtubeforcedmetochangemyname
I have some unknown wood and it's all nice until I turn it to round from a log after that I can let it sit sometimes for as little as an hour and then cracks everywhere one time I even watched a crack get bigger any idea of why it does this
@TheKlondikeCraftsman
@TheKlondikeCraftsman Год назад
Wet wood will crack on end grain. Fruit woods like cherry and apple are the worst. The best thing I have found is to cut the wood over length and seal the end-grain with wood glue diluted to 50% with water and let it dry. It can take a long time to dry so be patient. Thanks for watching!
@Youtubeforcedmetochangemyname
@@TheKlondikeCraftsman thank you for the tips I really don't know how wet it is so that may be the problem I'll try thisb
