To reduce the wobbling or fluctuations try using some counterbalance springs in the 4 corners to steady the platform as it rises or drops.

I’m thinking of the main work table with a big cutout. Then have multiple carts built like this that you can move into the cutout and raise up to level. You end up with a single work area that can quickly utilize all your tools. If you plan it out you can do this with your table saw, router, planer, joiner, miter saw, etc. a single location with power and dust collection.

Great idea and really helpful mentioning the shortcomings and areas for improvement. I'm planning on doing this with an existing mobile cart and using cut to length 2x4s just jammed into the corners to keep it level. When it's time to lower it I'll just raised it an inch and stack them underneath.

I know I’m late to the party, but for the ease of raising & lowering what about linear rails and bearings mounted vertically? The initial price maybe a bit steep but would prolong the life of the Jack and take any excess stress from the frame. Love the content 🇦🇺
@mmoouussee0011
@mmoouussee0011 3 года назад
The jack is sturdy front/back and not left/right. Instead of mounting the table directly to the jack, you can add two horizontal 2x4’s on the top of the jack. Then add vertical 2x4 at the base of the cart so your jack runs on a track. You’ll also maybe need to cut the top so the tracks will be flush so you can raise the top all the way up.

Nice idea. To reduce wobble, first, try a thicker base for the upper level and make it a super tight fit. Second,, you can try to put some casters and have them run vertically along the outer frame, at the same time, reduce the size of the flatform (obviously) but still make it a tight fit with the casters.
@WoodNerds

Great ideas! I didn’t even think about using casters.

It looks like pretty good design. The thing that most impresses me is it is simple to make. That is the most important attribute of a tool to me in the workshop. I feel it could also be used as a small home lifter with some modification, e.g. help move heavy things upstairs which is actually the reason I came to see this video. For the wobbly problem when move the platform up and down, I am thinking it might work to make some grooves on the legs and add the protruding blocks on the platform to fit in the groove.
@WoodNerds
@WoodNerds 6 месяцев назад
Thank you! Yeah, really easy to make and alter to fit your needs! The groove might be the trick. Whatever the solution, I think it just needs to be low friction. I honestly left it wobbly and haven’t had any real problems. Just need to watch that it doesn’t catch an edge and guide it up. Still really easy to do.
@michaellacaria910
@michaellacaria910 2 года назад
I’m going to build this with your jack idea. It’s simple and easy to implement thanks for a great idea. I will probably try a few different things like adding a removable plywood top so I can use the cart for as a table too, I don’t need to store store it away. To make the table more stable on the rise and fall, you can add pipe guides on the corners so it glides more stable. Instead of threaded rods to secure top I’ll try dowels on a string hanging there all the time. Probably one in each corner. The lifting is always difficult until you overcome the inertia needed to move it. Maybe by nudging it up until it gets momentum may help? Thanks for your summary at the end, really helps to tell us (me) your pros and cons.
@WoodNerds

For sure man! It still works great! I ended up getting new batteries for my drill and it works no problem. That drill is pretty old and weak at this point. Recently retired it. Those sound like great ideas man! Of course! Happy it was a helpful video and even if people don’t build it exactly, it’s a decent base to structure your own ideas from. I used it for a miter stand for a while and it did a decent job.

Actually you just gave me an idea around the ‘tracks’. What if you ran a T track vertically in each of the four corners ( or maybe two corners) then use a T-bolt that goes into the shelf plus a knob that can be tightened to really hold the shelf in place. At the same time I am wondering if there might be some binding inside the T-track/T-bolt with all that weight from a heavy power equipment or will it run smoothly?
@codacreator6162
@codacreator6162 3 года назад
Also, try using MDF or 3/4" plywood for the mounting base where the top of the jack is mounted to expand the balance/strength of the platform beyond what unidirectional 2x4s can provide. Just a thought. Or, half-lap joints on two- directional 2xs. Either should provide a little more lateral stability.

I am building a Bardominium, and all my own doors. My mobile workbench is going to be 8ft x 8ft. I have been trying to figure out how I am going to mount or use my planer with the workbench. Your idea is great. If I can use some of your ideas, I think I can build it, with maybe an air jack on one end of the huge workbench. Air, because my Makita air compressor will be mounted under the top on one side! And maybe have it come up high enough so the planer table is at the same height as the workbench top!
@customcraftsbybruceslaton4872

Easy way to keep it a little more steady while raising and lowering would be to add some casters on the bottom of the tray to ride on the inside of the legs. Or maybe a set or two of drawer slides if you had some kicking around
@WoodNerds
@WoodNerds 2 года назад
Adding casters to the bottom is a great idea and have them stick out a little on the edges! When it’s fully lowered it could rest on them! The slides was my initial thought but in order to extend enough they would sit proud of the top when it’s lowered all the way unfortunately!
@tomconway6808
@tomconway6808 3 года назад
Might be able to attach some HDPE sheeting to the inside of the legs to take out some of the slack between the top and legs. The HDPE is also slick so the top should be able to move still. You could also probably do the same thing with some hardboard/masonite or plywood with some paste wax. My other thought was routing some channels in the legs and then mounting some sort of a guide to the top to keep things straight.
@WoodNerds
@WoodNerds 3 года назад
Great ideas! I’ve been using the cart and the wobble is becoming less of a issue as I’m not lowering it and raising it more than a couple times per project. After building it, I tested it a bunch and was easy to focus on the small things but I’m actually really happy with it! To your point though, I bet I could route out a channel for t-track and use a t-bolt to guide it.

For the wobble would it be possible to route something like a T-track vertically into the legs and then mount a "tab" into the 4 corners of the top to allow it to stay aligned? Just kind of thinking out loud and you would need to maybe add some sort of lubricant to the tracks to allow it to glid smoothly up and down and sawdust could be an issue? Maybe some wheels mounted on the top pushing INTO the t-track or even a piece of angle iron?
@WoodNerds

Hey Brian! I hurt my back recently so I’ve been out of the shop but I think attaching the blocks that the platform rests on when the jack is fully retracted to the bottom of the platform would work well! It’ll work just like drag on an arrow and the additional length should keep it from wanting to tip! Just haven’t had a chance to try it out. Even without it, the tipping wasn’t that big of a deal. If you’re wanting to build this I would still suggest it. An awesome project! With the planer down, I slide a piece of plywood over top and use it at a work station for my miter saw!

Hey James! Thanks for watching man! I haven’t tried anything yet but that might help! I’ve read a few comments about using rods/conduit that might help. Also adding the stopper blocks on the bottom to the floating top would probably secure it.

Maybe increasing the base where the jack contacts the bottom of the plywood would stabilize it during lifting

That’s my thought as well! Might attach the bottom blocks to it to increase the surface area that contacts the frame.

OK, I was going to make this because I also want to store my planer under my workbench, but then it hit me, why not just make a "flip top" cart, but don't but a second tool, at least not permanently attached to the other side of the flip surface? This way, when the planer is flipped it will store under the bench, you can then pull it out, flip it to the up position for use. Benefit of this option, is when it is in down position, you can use the alternate top of the flipped surface to put another tool on, basically additional bench area. I will make one and post a link

Don't know if you ever found a good way to steady the platform but I'm in the process of building a lifting table like this for my table saw and I'm going to build some custom "shocks" out of 1/2" and 3/4" PVC with some pretty strong springs I found at HD. I'm planning on putting them in the corners to help "lift" the table as it goes up and down. It "should" also provide a steady surface for the table to rest on once it's retracted. Wish me luck and I'll post updates on how it goes.

Springs! I was going to suggest adding springs or even heavy bungee cords under the bottom to supply some tension to the corners to keep them tightened down and reduce wobble allowing the platform to move evenly. Just a thought. Enjoyed your video.

Thank for sharing your work and videos. I have a question, about how many hours a day you worked on the build without filming.
@WoodNerds
@WoodNerds 3 года назад
Hey Juan! Of actual work without standing around thinking, probably 3-5 hours. It really doesn’t take that much time to make cuts and screw some boards together. If I was going to make another one and had all the wood on hand and my video/cut list to reference I would say I could get it done in 3-5 hours.

Would two pieces of angle iron, at opposite corners, mounted vertically as guides help with raising and lowering?
@WoodNerds
@WoodNerds 2 года назад
Could! With some paste wax maybe? I’ve been using it as is and haven’t had any real issues. Too lazy to pull it apart and attempt any improvements haha. It’s counter intuitive but I think adding drag to the corners might keep it straight, similar to fletching on an arrow.
@kmartinator

Really cool build! I started percolating on the wobble when I saw it at the start, too. Could you maybe add a long dowel vertically on each corner, set away from the sides a bit, and maybe add blocks underneath the top platform to make kind of a sleeve? Drill holes through the blocks and top surface so the dowel can slide through. Extra blocks are just to make a longer sleeve. I don't know if the dowels would be rigid enough without going super big, but it would, in theory, be a fairly easy addition at this point in the build. No idea if it'd work, but maybe an idea to try! Good luck!
@WoodNerds
@WoodNerds 3 года назад
Thanks! Great suggestion! I bet that would help! Maybe I can find some thinner gauge metal rods that would be nice and rigid! Securing them might be a challenge but a great start.
@kmartinator
@kmartinator 3 года назад
Yea, securing them would be tricky. Maybe a piece of pipe? Threaded end, and add some sort of insert to the bottom platform. And it looks like it only really wobbles in one direction, so maybe you could get away with just two on either side of the planer itself. Or just say to heck with it and be careful when raising and lowering it (that's probably what I'd end up doing for myself, good enough for who it's for!)
@WoodNerds
@WoodNerds 3 года назад
Yeah, it’s really not a huge deal when it wobbles, it’s very controllable. I would just love it to be like butter haha.
@JerkDogJ
@JerkDogJ 2 года назад
Those spacer blocks you added to the base, if you added them to the underside of the top instead, would help control the racking/wobble. While contact seems counterproductive to the lifting, the more contact, the less wobble. And the jack has PLENTY of strength to handle friction, a bit of wax will help aswell.

I just bought the 735x on the Amazon sale plus if you sign up for the Amazon credit card offer, you get an additional $100 credit... so in the end it was $399 and I'll never use the credit card anyway. @WoodNerds
@WoodNerds 3 года назад
Thank you! I’m really excited about mine! It’s possible to build one that fits, I’d just have to rotate the planer when I use it every time. I had to take the crank handle off so it would even fit the way it does now. Making it slightly bigger also leaves me with options for storing my miter saw, other tools, as well as use it as a workspace if I take the planer off. I’ll be adding more cool stuff to this one in the future as I use it and find more what I like/dislike.
