Good morning Carrie, from a kindred knitter & hard core sewer in the Northern San Francisco Bay Area named Carrie as well!!!! I'm not sure if I spelled your name correctly, but my name spelled Carrie too! My parents spelled it that way as a nod to my dad's Scottish heritage, his parents (my paternal grandparents) immigrated from Scotland to the Bay Area in the 1920s. I learned to knit in 2006 & socks in 2022 and have knitted 5 pairs of socks so far. I will now always have socks on the needles! I'm a widow as of 2013 so my 2 sons and grandchildren are especially important to me as I don't have a lot of family. 2 pairs of socks have been gifted to friends. I have gifted 3 sweaters in 2023, one for my oldest son who is a police officer, and one for his wife, the beloved mother of my 3 grandchildren, and a sweater for my cherished only grandaughter! Maybe this is too much info, but I have 2 sons, and 3 grandchildren from my oldest son. I just sewed 2 bathrobes for my grandsons which they were happy to receive. Going to make a bathrobe for my grandaughter this weekend. I loved your episode so I subscribed, RU-vid said I was the 100th subscriber. I love to hear the stories of RU-vid broadcastors who resonate with me and have knitwear I can be inspired from. You certainly have beautiful sweaters and knitware I love. I love your wholesome life with raising a family and having a farm with sheep! I wasn't raised on a farm but I am retired with 2 border collie boys to keep me company. Anyhow the Ukraine situation is pitiful. Isn't it such a dilemma that even though people hate war we can't seem to get rid of it? And there are so many nukes that man could completely destroy the earth! Now covid was unleashed using gene technology that the US gave away to a communist nation, so all bets are off if a country decides to use germ warfare. It's a sad state of affairs. A lot of people wonder what is going on. There are Ukrainian families immigrating here that need lots of help. I can send you some further info on that if you have an email in your show notes that you will be posting. Just let me know. I look forward to RU-vid notifying me of your next episode!!!!! Cheers and enjoy your family this holiday!!!! Very best knitting higs, Carrie
Lovely to see you again. Thank you for a lovely podcast …I feel I have been to visit you! Can’t wait to hear about how you found the answer, re your Shetland fleeces… Thank you for mentioning Ukraine. Of course we are all caught up with various troubles/horrors around the world, and the focus, of course, is upon Gaza and the dreadful genocide happening there….but you’re right, we must not forget the rest of the world and all the suffering.
Good to see you Cary! You're sweaters are beautiful! I might join you in January for the sock spinning. I have been so busy with all the new goat and rabbit additions this summer and trying to grow my RU-vid channel. My spinning and crochet/knitting has suffered! It was a busy summer with all of that plus the gardens, but it was a fruitful year. ❤
Dear Cary, my heart is with you and I feel for all you have said at the end of the video. I continue to be amazed and inspired by the grand woman that you are. I'm happy to hear that youve cracked the code with your Shetland flock and that you are not giving up on that dream. Your great-granddaughters cardigan looks absolutely exquisite! What joy to sit and knit with you for a bit this evening ❤❤
I hope you have an intriguing, calm, peaceful holiday season. It’s very good to see you again here. Continuing with Patricia’s Knitography Farm coursework, currently I’m working on the Ingrid Kofte. Being of Scandinavian descent, I am happiest in those traditions.
Thank you for a wonderful video, Cary! It was such a joy to walk through the woods with you and see the different trees and nuts. Your Magnolia cardigan is beautiful and I really enjoyed hearing about your other projects too. I loved seeing the sacks of fleece with the photo and name of the sheep and all the details about them! Take good care of yourself and love to all your animals too 🐑🐑🐑🐶🐱🐴
Thank you for a wonderful podcast. You have inspired me to spin some fleece in the grease to make a pair of saltwater mittens. Unless I make another pair, I won’t be spinning in the grease. I love the mittens ,not the grease spin. As I like to spin intentionally for a project. I like spinning for sweaters or socks. Hope you have a wonderful holiday.
Beautiful thoughts you shared about Ukraina. I don't know anyone from there, I have no ties to that country, but my heart goes out to them every day. Of course as a Christian I'm feeling sad for the situation in Israel, too, but the Ukraina situation is different type of horribleness. I live in Finland and we have a long border against Russia, as well as long history with and against them. I'm appalled how western countries let Putin have his way, how horrible the lying and propaganda and corruption is in that country. It's just unbelievable! As the situation in Ukraina started, is pretty much similar to the way Russia attacked Finland some almost hundred years ago. And now they're manouvering people across the border here again, just to bully us - or something else in their mind. And when the border was closed on our side, they are shocked how could we do that! Oh, it's so enfuriating - and so scary. So imho, Putin should've been stopped at his feet already in 2014 when he overtook Krim. I think nothing good comes from Russia, the horrible values and submitting to the bullying by covernment is so deeply rooted in all Russian people. Anyway, beautiful fibery things you got there! We need to have and do beautiful things to smooth out a bit of the ugliness of this world. I've spun my first sock yarns this year (finally had the courage for it!) and knit two pairs from my handspun. Now I have a marathon of spinning Finnsheep to make into a sweater or a big shawl maybe, not sure yet. And about to cast on a cardigan with very lovely yarn spun by a small new spinnery (led by my spinning teacher). The yarn is 100% Kainuu grey, which is one of the three landraces we have. Soooooo soft and awesome
Thank you so much for sharing, I appreciate hearing your experiences in your country, so close to the border! I'm happy you shared about your spinning and knitting, too, if sounds beautiful 😊 Thank you for being here, I hope you'll visit often
How nice to see you back! I was spinning and drinking my morning cup of tea while I watched. I'm spinning singles for a three-ply yarn for sock. Very dark brown roving from a friend's Merino CVM cross called Nutmeg. I guess I'm too early for the sock spin-a-long, but I'll need to find something else for the heels and toes, so maybe I'll hold off on that until the New Year. Please don't apologize for sharing your feelings about the dreadful situation in Ukraine. Complacency is the ally of evil.
So wonderful to see you again Cary❤ Love your garden and your beautiful farm😍 So fun to see all your projects, will be so much fun to follow the shetland project❤ I hope you are okey anf have a lovley day❤❤
so lovely to see you and what you've been up to! The shetland fleeces look so beautiful, I hope you grow to love the process of working with them. Take care and happy thanksgiving!
Thank you! I do love the wool so much (well, I love the resulting yarn lol) and I adore the sheep themselves. I was just getting frustrated with myself. Thank you for watching and saying hello! I hope you're well ❤️
Hi Cary! This was my first time watching your podcast. Such beautiful footage of the woods and flowers. I can't wait to hear more about your natural dyes and the resolution of the Shetland fleece. Your great grand daughter's cardigan is just precious. Thanks for sharing your heart about Ukraine and reminding us to remember the sufferings of others. Blessings to you!
Thank you so much for stopping by, and for saying hello! I really appreciate that 😊 I think I need to do an entire episode and call it "fleece resolution" lol!
It’s so good to see you back Cary. Your hand knitted sweaters are beautiful - the recipients of your gorgeous makes are very lucky to receive them. I’ve been knitting for my new grandson who is now 3 weeks old and absolutely beautiful. I look forward to your video on processing your Shetland fleeces - I just love spinning Shetland wool. I was moved by your words on Ukraine. You are right that we should keep them in our thoughts and prayers.
I am so glad to see you again and hear about your wonderful Shetland sheep. Even with the state of the world, I think it is important to enjoy and give thanks for our animals and crops. Maybe it is even a kind of prayer, at least I try to make it so for all the people who are hurting in the world. I do hope you will have fleeces for sale soon, I love working with Shetland wool. Had a small flock myself when I lived up north. Now I have Navajo Chiro sheep here in NM. Can't wait for the spin along, it will be my first time😊
It's a very relaxed spin a long, with tips along the way 😊 I have a playlist for the last two years of videos about it, if you look here on my channel it should come up? If it doesn't I'll try to share a link with you 😊
Hello from cold and grey London. Glad to hear that you have managed to figure out the processing of the shetland fleece. They are such pretty creatures. You must have been sad at the thought that you may need to re-home them. Thank you also for your honest thoughts about the state of the world. It is so awful. x
And hello to you from snowy Michigan! Thank you for your comments - it has been a relief to figure out a way to work with the Shetland ❤️ And yes, every day it seems to be something new in our world doesn't it?
So good to see you, Cary! I enjoyed seeing your sweater projects. I’m happy you’re figuring out the Shetlands. Can’t wait to see what you have planned. Take care! 🥰
So good to see you Cary. I appreciated seeing that lovely Magnolia sweater. What a treasure it is. Sorry to hear of your dismay at some aspects of raising Shetland sheep and selling your fleeces. I hope it all comes together for you in the year ahead. I too have been sick about the wars raining down on innocent people in the world. I an sending you a big hug from Canada.
@@mywoolmitten yes, I keep adding projects to my list😀. I am working on socks, a shawl, a blanket, a hat and a scarf. Hope to finish a couple for Christmas.
Hi Cary! So glad to see you back! Summer is always sooo busy, but luckily we have the long cold nights of winter to snuggle up to our knitting. That's a precious little cardigan you knit for your grand daughter 🥰
Wonderful to visit with you again Cary. Love that you are saving your flowers to dye with, your gardens are so beautiful. So great to see the sheepies again, they are absolutely adorable and so much fun to pet :) I am really glad you were able to figure out the shetland fleece / fiber, can’t wait for you to share what you have done. Excited about the sock along again this year, I really look forward spinning and knitting socks with you. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.🐑🥰🤗
Thank you Margo! Your input on the fleece was extremely helpful to me 😊 Did you notice the special ornament on the table? It's so beautiful and I treasure it!
@@mywoolmitten I am going to spend thanksgiving in Pittsburgh with my daughters❤️ I am so happy to have a break from teaching. I finished up this past Wednesday and don’t return to campus until January How about you? A beautiful thanksgiving on your farm?
It is so nice to see you again! I feel very much the same about the state of the World. My family is of Ukrainian and Russian decent and we are Jewish. I’m sure you can imagine how I’m feeling, since you articulated it very well. We can’t be afraid to live our lives and have joy, but I also understand the survivor guilt that comes with that. I remain thankful for the fact that joy can be part of my experience. However, that doesn’t stop me from thinking of ALL who suffer right now around the world. I try to do what I can locally, while I come to terms with much of the hatred I see on display in a way I’ve not experienced in my 64 years of life. Hugs to you! So glad the Shetlands are going to work out. You’ve worked so hard to reinvent the flock, nice that it will be ok.
This was such a touching and personal episode, thank you for sharing all that you’ve been working on and dealing with since your last podcast. Much admiration to you for taking on a new to you breed and exploring the new properties of their fleeces and finding success in working with them. I also want to thank you for expressing your heartfelt thoughts and emotions about the conflicts that seem to be exploding throughout the world. My family roots are in Russia and Poland and involved unspeakable horrors for my father’s family, many of whom were lost to pogroms during the First World War and then the holocaust of the Second World War. I ache for the people of Ukraine and the devastation and loss of life they are enduring. I support them 100% in their fight to survive. I do feel that despite growing up in the privilege and safety of the US, growing up in a family that lived through those kinds of conflicts did affect me. I’ve been so upset by all of this current violence as it brings back so much of my father’s suffering that I remember witnessing. There should not be a competition for who is suffering more now. Any people wanting a life of peace and safety deserve it and I pray that this will happen. These conflicts create generational trauma and no one deserves that. I pray for the people of Ukraine, Israel, and Palestine (sans Hamas) and hope that their lives will be more secure and that their faith in living a meaningful and fulfilling life will be restored. Wishing you and your family the best.
Thank you, Carry, for your beautiful podcast. I have missed seeing you. You have such beautiful projects you are working on. Your spoiler of your processing your Shetland wool is very intriguing. Can’t wait to hear more about it. I have been knitting Christmas gifts and knitted items for a brand new grand niece and her brother. I have been spindle spinning some cormo fiber. The state of the world is very sad. for the most part people in these fighting countries don’t want these wars. They want to live peaceful lives. ❤. I pray for world wide peace. 🙏🏻
Hi Cary, So good to see you again. I was worrying when you were talking about your struggles with your fine Shetland fleece. It is definitely a very different fiber to work with, but I must admit it is one of my very favorite ones. I'm so glad to hear you are making good progress in figuring out how you will deal with it. I appreciated your comments on the situation in the Ukraine, as well as around the world. Our lives are busy, and with one crisis following another and taking over the news, we can easily forget those whose suffering we at first felt so keenly. But I think it's ok to feel the joy and comfort of having our homes, our families, our animals around us. It can be the thing that keeps us humbly thankful. And it can then spur us on to do what we can for others. I may never be able to personally help those in was torn countries, but I can help my neighbors; I can give and support to help feed and house those near me who need it. And I can keep those countries and people, like the Ukrainians and others always in my prayers. I do believe that God cares and hurts along with them when He sees this broken world of our.
Thanks Carrie for another enjoyable episode. I always love seeing the farm and the garden and all the things you have grown. I just finished a test knit for Anna of the Bluebird Box. And am currently crocheting an amigurumi for my granddaughter. Lovely to see you again. Take care.😊
Thank you Cary for filming and putting out this podcast. I enjoy seeing the flowers of your garden and the natural beauty of your farm. Please don't apologize for your podcasting skills. I wouldn't know where to start and am appreciate those who put in the time and effort to do so. I'm glad to hear that the Shetlands will work out for you. I spun some commercially prepared Shetland roving this summer. It was lovely to work with and I do like the resulting yarn. The world is a very hard place right now. As you say, none of us have any answers. The best thing for me is to extend kindness and compassion locally. Thank you for being here.
So great to see you and all is well. Such an interesting conversation on the fine wool fleece. That was wonderful. Can’t wait to see how you figured it out and made into roving. Also lovely sweaters.
