Woollahra Garbage

Recently I spent some time in the eastern suburbs of Sydney to catch some rear loaders run by the local councils for domestic collections. Woollahra was one of these councils, which I last visited about 6 years ago, getting two of their JP5/Volvos doing garbage and green-waste. I think they only have a single JP5 left in the fleet now, with the rest of the big trucks featuring the newer UrBin bodies. Considering I previously had very little footage of an UrBin, I definitely wanted to hunt down one of these trucks, more so as they’re mounted on Volvos! In my past batch of Woollahra uploads I had a long video of the green-waste and very little of the garbage, so I decided to primarily target a truck doing weekly garbage collections on this occasion.
I ended up taking this footage during two mornings. On the first visit I tracked down an incomplete section, expecting a truck to show in this particular spot early to start the second load. I’ve learnt in the past you can drive around everywhere looking for trucks and different areas, get nothing doing that, and then miss other opportunities because of choosing not to wait around. I just can’t win in this respect, because it turns out where I waited was the end of the run, so after sitting in a street for over 2 hours, the team finally rocked up mid morning to polish off the remaining streets. This only gave me about 5min of footage :/ I was far from satisfied, so I returned the next morning to capture the rest. Just thought I’d mention getting this footage wasn’t effortless...
The first half features the portion I captured on Tuesday morning, with the boys handling units in Woollahra itself, and the rest I took early Wednesday morning while two of the guys knocked over the work in Point Piper. #614 is the rear loader featured, being one of the newest Volvos in the council fleet - was cool to finally watch one of these in action! Hopefully in future I will return to catch one of the little Garwood RLs the council operates for tight access. Note Woollahra recycling went from streamed collections to co-mingle not long ago. URM took over the job and as always they’re running second hand trucks, two of which are Hinos with Compaction Systems bodies, one I suspect is ex-Leichhardt and the other ex-Sydney. Anyway cheers to the council garbos, hope they enjoy the footage along with the rest of you.

it really makes day seeing u of a morning emptying out my bins. you always do an amazing job and look very suave in your uniform and you always brush your hair nicely. if I could nomiate you for garbo of the year I would gladly do it!!!

It is an ex east waste ttuck as I asked a driver in my aera and he said yes it is one of our old truks

No it's not an old East Waste truck, it's always been a Woollahra truck. This Volvo is only a matter of years old, built ages after crate recycling was being phased out. You've got it very wrong.....

more actual recent footage lately! nice seeing something other than "this is a video from way back in 2011" lol I'm alright with that lifter for sure, every once in awhile they stopped it before it ran its course of tipping all the way, so early in the vid I'm thinking "come on...!" but it does give a sufficient angle to get everything out. and less spillage than older / different lifters it seems like. guess the spill flap or whatever you guys call it is more strategically mounted? also happy with the UrBin's packer, beefed up lookin thing that's on par with a Leach. really enjoy the hissing sound as the blade closes. only gripe would I guess be that weird delay right after it opens, before it lowers...is that due to the operator's style or more of an equipment glitch?

+Trashman242 haha Yeh I do have a handful of videos taken recently which will be seen soon, but most of which you probably won't be watching for, hmm, about 5 years :P That lifter does go pretty good, just sucks I haven't had the opportunity to try one out myself yet. With it being stopped short of fully up, it can be a method with the bigger bins to "throw" the rubbish further into the hopper, rather than lifting the bin all the way and letting everything pile up front - can save the need to wait for packer clearing. I'd say the lack of spillage would be more due to the operator knowing what he's doing by keeping the hopper cleared so it doesn't overflow too much, which would allow crap to spill out the sides, wide sweep angles helps too I guess. You can't miss the beefier look of these packers, actually gives more of an old school look compared to the previous JP5... still not as meat as a Leach :D I dig that hissing sound too, a different characteristic! Also that delay before it lowers is a common thing with these bodies, pretty sure it's related to the cushioning, so ideally you start the cycle earlier than you have to - only seems good on clean-up as it gives you an extra chance to push/fold something bulky under the blade.

Mmm good point about the delay being good for cleanup, I definitely could see that advantage, if you plan for it when loading anyway. Other thing I forgot to mention was how neat it is seeing a couple days' of the same truck, shown in chronological order, in the same upload...along with the fact that I like that off-white paint choice for the body. Very distinctive and a nice change...so far I'm pleased with the UrBin now that I've finally seen one. Any gripes you have or have heard about it? But yeah, uploads are gonna be like that from me too. Can't just upload all the recent stuff at once because then your viewers will only be left with outdated things to watch once the new runs out!

I'd still prefer a normal flowing cycle but, especially if you've got a heap of big things to get rid of and you want the packer cycle completed ASAP... probably more annoying than it is useful. Honestly haven't been told many things great about the body compared to the previous, seems like a situation where older is better. The UrBin is more advanced electronically and there have been structural changes, but not a lot of which I'm familiar with apart from the obvious overall shape. For a while they were also retro-fitting different non-ribbed sweep blades to a lot of trucks which were originally built with the ribbed blade, apparently there was some design/quality flaw. The JP5 body was an awesome unit - simple, reliable, tough and very popular; it was a sad time when they ceased production. I've only used one of the UrBin prototypes on clean-up, so I'm yet to develop a wider opinion on the product. Mind you there are a lot of them out there and I'm sure they go just fine when they don't stuff up, lifter is definitely awesome anyway. I do miss the rugged ribbed appearance, rougher packer operation without the cushioning and the louder revs on the old model, made it a real rear loader :P I do have two other UrBin videos from a while ago now, search for the JJ Richards and Bankstown trucks. I also liked how it came out with the double shift action in this video, a bit of daylight and darkness.

hey mitch just wondering if you or Melbournegarbo are going to come down to the city of casey area i know one of you came a while ago but i dont remember who came anyway if one of you could come down and do some videos of the trucks that would be great kind regards Hayden smeets

Nice video. I see this truck has the safety witch on the side of the control panel that you have to hold while you hold the lifter button to allow the lifter to work. What time do these guy finish and is it 2 or 3 loads?

+MelbourneGarbo® I honestly didn't even notice them using both hands at the controls, how's that for shit observation! Those dead man switches are stupid on RLs, just a pain in the arse, I bet they'll become safety standard in future but. A lot of the council trucks in the eastern suburbs are usually done around mid morning, generally won't be collecting much later than 10am - not that I'll elaborate on that ;) They generally tip off twice each day, but sometimes one load when it's only houses - less weight so it takes longer to load up.

+MitchellM15 I only noticed because I've worked on UrBins with the switches. I love being able to finish somewhere between 10 and 12. Most of the time on Wednesdays I get home and my bins aren't even collected yet.

+MelbourneGarbo® A ryde driver showed me this when I was on the run with him, get a small stick or something like that and jam it in the dead man switch, works a treat as you only have to hold one button when operating the UrBin's controls just make sure you take it out at the end of the day so management or the bosses dont see :P

***** Oh yeah that's a good idea. It never seem to bother me when I had the dead man switch.
