Kinda, invest $60 on the work sharp $25 on the stone Holder. Then stones are $25 on up... it adds up & you can quickly get up towards KME price range.
@NeevesKnives
@NeevesKnives 2 года назад
@@r.d.1056 kme also has attachments that bring its price way farther than the base price, at the end of the day I can get kme results with this system now at half the price of the kme with the attachments that make it great as well, and I believe it's even more than that with the venev stones, of course there's even more attachments to the kme but for some people 100$ more is a big deal when they can get these results, this attachment is a massive improvement to this system, I'm surprised I never seen one for the lansky system
@r.d.1056
@r.d.1056 2 года назад
I totally understand. But Like you said in the video, this stuff gets expensive and it adds up quickly. Especially if you're like me & want to get all the stuff. 😆 IMHO if you're going to spend $200 on all the stuff to get the work sharp up to par , you might consider saving up another $120 and get the KME deluxe kit. I think it's a damn good value for what you get. Just something to think about !

Putting a mirror on the table underneath the blade is a game changer! Helps me keep from over traveling and being accurate with the little work sharp stones. I also use a little led light beside the mirror. These after market stones look so much better- my 220 stone is already worn out after about 5 reprofiles.

I have this and it does expand the range of abrasives that can be used with the Worksharp, however it doesn't fix the flexing issues with the clamp armature obviously, so you're still having to support the knife with the other hand if you want an even edge. Also, adding all these accessories to it just to get it to do what a KME will do seems overkill. For my purposes, I'll stick with it, as is as a quick precision sharpener for non-critical work using the three-way abrasives. They've got a good thing started here and hopefully will bring it the next step with a v2 edition. Thanks for the review! 👍🗡️👍
@fldiverjc4496
@fldiverjc4496 Год назад
I agree it might be overkill...but compare the total price and your about $40 less than thr base kme, and your getting more grit options plus the tri-abrasive thr system ships with. I had the kme system for some time until it totally fell apart on me....I found this system much easier to use. Does it have short comings...sure it does, but so does every system on the market. Bottom line there isn't a system that delivers this type of performance for the dollars spent....period.

I just bought that from my worksharp precision adjust at 1st I was very happy. Using that and the kami gold diamond stones I'd achieve my best sharpness levels ever. Using the venev Scorpion stones even better yet! But as I was finishing up My Bradford guardian in crew wear I noticed some weirdness on the edge under magnification. Even though I measured it with an angle finder the angles were not maintaining consistency. Upon further inspection it's the grittmatic stoneholder. When I put either the kami stones or the Venev's The black Spring loaded portion of the gritomatic moves up and down . Enough so that you can see a fair amount of daylight between the stone and the holder on the black end. I may be able to come up with some way to prevent this from happening but don't think I should have to. If you have one of these check yours out when you put the stone in and let me know if it's a common design flaw or whether adjust my unit thanks.

I got a little confused when you were talking about the angle changing. I use the sharpie method to set my angle so even though the new diamond stones are wider, once the angle is set it won't change as I progress through the rest of the stones, is that correct? The angle on your bevel will change as you move farther away from the center. It happens with all fixed guided sharpening systems and is for the most part unavoidable. You would basically have to reclamp the knife over and over to stop it from happening. When the distance it takes for the stone to contact the edge changes so does the angle. It is typically very slight though and the tip tends to have the highest deviation of being 1-2 degrees lower since the stone travels farther to make contact.

I like the work sharp for people that want to sharpen their own knife. It’s cool and all and I might even get one but personally I run a wicked edge and I love it. Although it was a large investment (as anything would be at such high quality) it’s worth every penny. I can get a mirror polished edge at the fraction of the time it would take to do free hand or a system like the kme, worksharp, etc. and another thing that people don’t think about is the fact that I can turn knifes around so fast I can charge less for my knife sharpening services. Not only that but the wicked edge is very intuitive, with a couple days of tinkering I was able to refine my technique on a couple junk knifes. In my opinion it’s better than free hand as it dose not take months or years to perfect form and technique and idk about you but I don’t have that kind of time to perfect free hand let alone have enough confidence to work on someone else’s knife. This is just my opinion on the whole sharpening war and where I stand. In terms of quality wicked edge all the way, but for most bang for your buck and your average joe, worksharp.

I've had the pleasure of trying your edges. I see no problem with paying $30 for you to sharpen. Your edges are fantastic! As far as I'm concerned, if you don't want to pay $30 a knife for sharpening, then learn how to sharpen them yourself.😂 I'd like to buy a set of venev for my KME. I haven't used the KME much since I finally got the hang of free hand. Free hand on a 8" stone is just quicker than a guided system with a 4" stone. That being said..what's the difference between the dog series and the scorpion series? I see a big price difference between the 2, so am curious. On a guided system, I strongly recommend buying an angle cube to measure your angles. Every different stone will give you a different angle due to the difference in thickness of the stones. You can't go by the pre set angles. It may tell you 20 degree, but if you measure it you will find it isn't 20 degree at all.. If all your stones are the exact same thickness, you won't have to measure between each one, but you still need to check the angle on your 1st stone to be sure you are sharpening at the angle you want. I know on my KME, the 20 degree preset isn't even close to 20 degrees. Also, it will change on each different knife, due to the different width of the blade. An angle cube is a must have item for any guided system imho. I also try to knock off the burr before going to a strop. A burr can scatch up your strop if it's thick or a bad ht that doesn't want to give up that burr easily.
@NeevesKnives
@NeevesKnives 2 года назад
Yeah most people don't have an issue paying the people that do are the ones that buy 50$ knives without planning on it needing to be sharpened, they also are the same people who ruin their edges on 3$ pull through sharpeners, they usually don't understand the difference between a quality edge and an edge that's sharp, but it's hard to wrap their head around it costing half the price of the knife they bought, they don't consider that's also the price of the knife, they think it's only a 60$ knife. It's like buying a car for 6000$ and being pist that gas costs so much or how much new brakes are

Serious question why is it that some say to keep track of how many swipes per side to keep a even Apex and then you have those that just go to town? Is it because of experience and you are able to eye it and get it even?
@NeevesKnives
@NeevesKnives Год назад
Yes, on reality making the same amount of swipes is not necessary because the bevels could be miss ground and so could the grind, so one might require more than the other, so you want to use your eyes to follow the grit pattern, but I do think you should learn how to blend by taking a certain amount of passes on each side after the side is finished in order to keep your scratch pattern consistent if that makes sense, and not to work on a specific area to long before doing so

@NeevesKnives
@NeevesKnives 2 года назад
Yes it does I stop around the medium stone in the bunch, which in many cases is a more quality edge and is very sharp. A medium grt edge around 600 grt has a great amount of bite so the edge is perfect for most tasks. Some steels do good with a polishing stone but all do great at a medium grt

No need to spend all that money on those fancy stones, nor spend the time to maintain them. I got the same mirror finish results with about $18 worth of 3M PSA lapping sheets from 40 down to 0.3 micron. Each sheet is 4.25 x 11", which is enough to yield 22 (4.0 x 0.5") strips for the WorkSharp system. Each strip is probably good for 3 knives, so 66 knives with a mirror finish for $18, and you never have to worry about whether it's flat. If you think it's worn, toss it and grab another.

$30 is ideal. People have to think you have to set up and tear down after you get done. That’s not counting what time it takes to do it. Then you have to clean up. You have to order and replace those stones. I re-sharpened a L max blade and I wish I would’ve kept track of how many hours it took me to do it. If I could’ve got it done for 30 I would’ve shipped it off along time ago.

Exactly and most people know and understand but then there's folks that buy a 60$ knife and think that's it, never considering it will eventually need to be sharpened and maintained, its like buying a 1000$ car and then complaining that the breaks cost so much, it's like the cost of breaks has nothing to do with how much you paid for the car. I don’t get why you wouldn’t get good as quality knives with this versus free hand. The idea of sharpening a knife is using a stone to give it an edge. This requires a good stone, and time and work. It doesn’t matter if you’re using a system to do it or are doing it by hand. If you can provide those 3 things you’ll get the same result regardless if it’s free hand or something else. The problem is, or was I should say, is that most systems don’t offer quality stones. But with a system like this, if the tone companies are willing to make a stone for the system all you need to do is put the time and work into it.
