I came to Brazil 10 years ago and started teaching English. I didn't have a lot of money at the time (and I don't think I have it now!) but I noticed that I could live pretty well with a third of what I used to make back home (America). It ain't paradise, but once you learned how to speak the language life becomes way easier. I never had a car here since I never needed one in Rio De Janero. The city is huge and my only problem was to find people that could speak English.

I used to live and work at the US Embassy in Brasilia and I'll tell you that I would live there permanently. I like RDJ more kkkkk. But based on what I saw, what I experienced there and the information you shared, I rather wait until I get my retirement incomes and then move. Not planning on living in Brasil after retirement but that's what I would do. I'm not a business person, neither a "jack of all trades" so in my case waiting for my military and government pensions will be paramount before moving to another country.

I'm glad you mention taxes! I was shocked at the level of taxation in Brazil and with the state of public services I wonder where the taxes are being spent. Most probably ending up in the pockets of corrupt politicians! Onde no Brazil é vocé?

I like your style Joe Naab. When you're video started and you were talking about the types of jobs that people could get... I smiled, because I know what I'm launching. And then you said it, "An internet type job". My current intention is to move down to Rio in January for 3 or 4 months, to get away from NYC winter and in my sleepless excitement about our upcoming launch... i decided to do a little research on my home for the winter and found you. You're website has been book marked and I look forward to learning more about you. Something tells me that the law of attraction is working nicely for you :D

Hi Michael. I, too, am working on a website launch for a project unrelated to Brazil (it's for people who love to sing). I haven't put much time into videos about Brazil. Since this video about working and earning money in Brazil has been so popular, I've been wanting to create a few follow-ups on different ways to earn money online, which is by far the best way to work, no matter where you live in the world. What you're planning to do is something I also recommend, living here only half the year or less on a tourist visa with an online-style income as it allows you to avoid the two hardest parts of living in Brazil - earning money and getting a permanent visa. I'd like to one day spend the Brazil winter months enjoying the Seattle summer months. Thanks for stopping by.

That's what's it's about Brazil for Life!!! What people should understand is that "YES.. even though building a business from scratch, in this manner takes time and hard work... in the long run, the Time Freedom that coincides with 'said effort' is far more fulfilling once the foundation has been laid!!

Michael Leedy What's cool about online opportunities is that you don't even have to build your own online business. For example, I get so many emails from people who want to come here to teach English. There's a number of online language schools in need of English teachers to teach over skype to their students. They pay better than any language school here would pay a foreign teacher (around $12 to $15 per hour). There are many "jobs" or "employment opportunities" online without having to start a business or become a web designer. It could be as simple as a customer service rep handling inbound phone calls wearing a headset in your Brazilian apartment. Even at $10/hr, 40 hr/wk, one would earn $1600/mo, or roughly R$3500/mo. That's more than most Brazilians work and it would be tax free. If the person moved or traveled within Brazil, they wouldn't lose their job or their clients. Have a good one!

Last year I had the good fortune to visit quite a few countries with my work including both India and Brazil.Rio and Hyderabad were both amazing experiences. Both countries had a buzz about them like they knew they were on the up. All the people I talked to were very positive and there was just a pervasive great vibe. Contrast that with some places in Europe or America where the consensus is things have peaked and seem to be declining. I would love to live in Brazil or India. Amazing places.

Diego, that's exactly what I did! I learned the language and the culture. But every now and then, people who live abroad miss their culture, their own land. I don't know if you ever lived in another country, if you do you will understand what I am talking about. Brazil is a beautiful country, Portuguese is a nice language, but I miss my people, my home and I love when I meet somebody that understand my nation and culture.

Good informations. For people with money to invest or open an own business and qualified ones who come to work for American or Brazilian big companies, the country is really good. And the middle class can pay a domestic employee (still cheap). But, for people without money it's difficult a "Brazilian dream"; things aren't easy and jobs that require no studies are bad paid (and so the slums). Most find jobs as Eng. teachers, tour guides, hotels etc. enough to get the necessary without luxuries.
@EditoraEcolivrosPublishing
@EditoraEcolivrosPublishing 4 года назад
Unfortunately, a lot of the obstacles Americans face in Brazil to get a job are caused by reciprocity matters: the USA government establishes hindrances for Brazilians to work in the U.S., so Brazilian government does the same. But Americans may find easy to get jobs in Brazil as English teachers just by being native speakers, no further qualification needed. And never mind, Brazilian officials are not that strict about resident undocumented foreigners.

There are so many great small towns in Brazil, literally thousands of them. I will share an idea of one I know down here in the south that I think is fantastic. It's the small city of Garopaba in Santa Catarina, about and hour and a half south of Florianópolis. It will depend a great deal on what kind of weather you like, too, and also the style of Brazilian culture, as the personality of Brazil changes from region to region.

Good video. My only counterpoint is that the public sector is not near half the economy as has been said and that there are plenty of opportunities in the private sector. Federal public jobs pay more than the average private sector jobs, but the top private sector jobs pay way more than the public ones. At state and city levels, the public salaries are quite lower. I´m a Lawyer and have worked both at an office and in different public civil servant jobs and currently work at a federal regulatory agency in the Brazilian North-East. Today, my friends from university that went to the private sector mostly earn more than I do, but I have other advantages, like a stable career, yearly vacations, no crazy overtime work during weekends etc. The point I´m making though is: if a foreigner has top qualifications, particularly in technological subjects, he has good chances to earn very well in the private sector. If not, he´ll have to compete with millions of Brazilians that are in the same situation, but speak the native language, have networks and know their country. To those that´ll say that this only applies to Sao Paulo and the Centre-South, well that´s where 2/3 of Brazilians live and work. And, from my own personal experience as a Paulista in Maranhao, because of the relative lack of qualified labour in the more peripheral areas of the country, I´d actually say that it´s easier to get a better paid job outside of the big centres. If you bring valuable and rare skills with you. Or enough money to start a business.There is a veritable invasion of paulistas, cariocas and mineiros here and in other northern and north-eastern states.

I don't know what you meant, but your channel shows that you have even tried to learn Brazilian Portuguese. Happiness can not be measured only by development index, wealth etc of a country. Even in very poor countries we see people from richer places because they feel more identification with that culture, nice people etc. I, for example. was in the US as a tourist, liked many things, but wouldn't like to live there for cultural reasons and because I consider the way of life in Brazil superior.

@@mr.serenity7203 Wow, where has the time gone. I wrote this comment 7 years ago and I'm still in Brazil. Now, is not a good time to really be looking for a job. What you're most likely going to end up doing is teaching English, which can get you a reasonable salary for Brazilian standards if you know what you're doing. With so many Brazilians being unemployed, I don't see anyone hiring you as a security guard when they could hire a Brazilian citizen. Portuguese is also a must here. You have to have a decent support system when you arrive. I came and got married to a citizen whose family helped me a great deal to get on my feet.

Yes, prices have more than doubled, in some cases tripled, in the ten years that I've lived here. It's no longer an inexpensive country. However, it is actually possible to design a very inexpensive lifestyle here, especially if you're willing to live in a small city or in the countryside.

As a tourist I had no problems in Portugal, but I know that many immigrants suffer prejudices because of some bad ones and many Portuguese generalize them. There were also problems with Brazilian dentists (much more advanced) who were taking their jobs etc. But the Brazilian influence is big there in many things (television etc.) So, for me it's difficult to say that they hate us more than love us... Now they are immigrating easily because our laws help them. Here they can't say that hate us...

Hello, anagameiro. Yes, most investments are in bigger cities, but I think it depends on the State. In richer ones like São Paulo State or the South there are some small towns with good private medical sector. I have a relative who made a lot of money working as a private doctor in a very small town in Minas Gerais State, working in an area not well served by the local public health. So, part of the population (with money) saw him as a good option and didn't need to travel.

According the last magazine "Veja", the US are among the three countries that export more workers to Brazil. In general they are more qualified and the own companies require a work visa for them. Without this option, things are difficult for most foreigners and some try to risk with a tourist or student visa. A growing number is looking for a MBA here, trying to contact companies that could require them. With the crisis, many Portuguese are immigrating again to Brazil because of easier visa.

Just to feel the differences, see these videos: 1) "Desfile da Oktoberfest 2010 - Blumenau". It's a party in Blumenau in the same state (Santa Catarina) where Joe Naab lives. 2) the video "Olodum Salvador Bahia HD" shows the big African influence in Bahia, where most people have African ancestry. Some more mixed states like Rio, São Paulo, Minas Gerais etc. have different influences. Happily we speak the same language, but it's like if we had many countries inside a big one.

Jobs in Brazil pay about half of what you would get in the US. However cost of living is half. A barber makes peanuts down there. A haircut can be had for a US dollar or two. You can work under the table down there but there isn't a whole lot of money. A guy my size could be a bodyguard for the night but we are talking about making maybe $10 US.

No, LoyalNancy, the medical private area don´t invest much in small towns in Brazil. almost the totality of health care in this citys are from the local goverment. again, just like the video said, public jobs. And yes, the payment is very good in this jobs in order to keep the doctors in this small towns.

(continuing) For Brazilians and immigrants with low salaries or unemployed, maybe the only big advantage in comparison to the USA is the public health (despite crowded hospitals and waiting in big cities). It's free for all citizens, including surgeries, treatments and some medicines. Even foreign tourists in case of accident or serious emergency don't pay anything. But, of course, taxes are higher for the middle and high classes, but they prefer to pay health plans etc. for faster services.
@edshift

I guess I'm trying to say both India and Brazil have more in common with each other at this point than with the more established (and spent...) countries of the North West. (Basically Europe and USA) We screwed it all up. You guys have the opportunity to learn from their mistakes and build sustainable successful 1st world countries. Check out Norway as a decent template. Another fabulous place to be. Luv and peace. Ed.
@LoyalNancy
@LoyalNancy 11 лет назад
Yes, but for historical reasons etc. there is more poverty than in other ex-colonies like the USA, Canada, Australia etc, which means a smaller percentage of middle class to keep the country. But many Brazilians are "blind" and only criticize... Despite the inheritance, at least there is public health no matter if you pay taxes or not. Even foreigners/tourists don't pay in case of accident or serious emergency. It can be bad or hard specially in very big or poor cities, but better than nothing.
@LoyalNancy
@LoyalNancy 11 лет назад
Saheen, you can't know more than me because I am a Brazilian and have always lived in Brazil. What impresses me is how people generalize and form opinions about other countries etc. based only on what TV etc. show. Don't forget that they live on sensationalism and most news are only negative. Even in Brazil, many Brazilians in other parts of the country have only terrible ideas on giant cities like São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro because the media only shows crimes and few good things happening.

Garopaba is very safe and has 1st world infrastructure. I'm not sure what rent would be. Maybe starting at R$700/mo for a 1-bdrm apartment up to R$1500/mo for a 2-bdrm house. For USD's divide that by 2. A small town on the Bahian coast to check out would be Itacaré. You could also try Porto Seguro and Arrial de Ajuda in Bahia. It's more tropical up there. A very different culture, too. Load up Google Earth and fly over and these areas to check them out.

Joe, thank you so much for being so gracious to share your time with me. That town sounds great. I like warm beach weather. I have heard that Salvador da Bahia's culture is great. If the region that you suggested is something like that, it would be fantastic. Roughly what would it cost to rent an apartment there say a 1bdrm? Definitely, need indoor plumbing and running water and standard electricity and some sense of safety. Does the area offer these things?

This is really a GREAT video. Brazil needs to go LONG LONG WAY to turn into a civilized country like the Western World. Here this man was saying things about Brazil more than 100% correct. This is exactly what Brazil is. You cannot do anything there unless you bring with yourself a BIG cash but even after that there is 99% chance you will loose your money by the easy going Brazilian people. Nothing to do in Brazil except looking finding easy going women and passing lazy time in sea beaches!

Maybe there is market for foreigners in the private area. Probably the medical field has enough people in big, developed cities and the best chances are in small or medium towns.There are always offers with very good salaries for distant, very poor towns in Amazonia etc., because nobody wants or stays a short time. It's not easy a work visa (see in google "getting a work visa in Brazil") and about salaries, write "salários de técnico em ultrassom" and use a translator. One dolar= 2 reals now.

My compatriot Luciana, do not think that the situation in countries considered developed is much better. The US nor even have public health (irrisory). If one is poor, unemployed, without health plan and money to pay the very expensive private medicine in the US, they only can pray... In Canada where, on the contrary, all the hospitals are public, there are not enough doctors and people can wait until 20 hours in an emergency room... Everywhere people criticize high taxes. Much better?

Joe lives in the South, that has nice beaches but the water is cold compared to other regions. The climate there is subtropical (less heat and cold winter). It's an European region with many descendants of North Europeans. Probably Joe felt more "at home" there. Salvador, Capital of Bahia, is very "African". There are many American farmers in this state. Many foreigners prefer Rio de Janeiro state and the Northeast because it's more tropical, more fun, parties etc. It depends on what you search.

I think that "waytopluto" exaggerated a little. Portuguese don't like some immigrants (poor specially) as in the whole world, but they have always immigrated to Brazil and more now because of the crisis in Europe, so, there is no reason to hate us. Many Americans of African ancestry feel a big identification by Bahia, that keeps strong African traditions. Most people there are friendly, always have a smile, parties the whole year... what have also attracted some Europeans etc. to live there.

Hi, Samuel! I'm from Brazil, maybe I could help a little bit... I think what you have to do is validate your diploma here by taking a test, which issued by the ministry of education every year. Then, you could look for a job as surgeon in a hospital or set up your own business. Despite the pay normaly not being as high as in the US for the same job, the cost of living is lower, so you'll have a profit and have enough for living well, travelling and all those things. Good luck!

Joe, for me I would like to go to a place that is not very popular where I can rent an apartment for about a year live simply and write. I want to use the time there to write. So I need a very simple and economical life. It should be just interacting with people and eating the foods of the country not at restaurants. What is a town or city you would suggest.

so hi, im thinking of miving to brazil next year and im Guyanese from Guyana. i was wondering about container houses an its practicality there. You said housing or renting for that matter would be a big money spender so i was thinking about container houses. now would that be practical? land purchase or land lease or stuff like that?

You are misinformed and probably live in São Paulo state, that has very big and powerful companies and strong private sector. It depends on the area. Federal jobs pay more in general, but salaries can vary greatly between those who work for states or municipalities. See the big number of preparatory courses for competitions to get public jobs, not only for better salaries and better retirement, but because they are "safe" and public employees can not be fired without a very serious reason.

Thank you. I'm retired and looking to relocate to Brazil in a few years. I'm in college majoring in supply chain management and would like to know if you think that I would be able to find employment in that field? I don't need the money but I want to be able to be productive.

Do university faculty jobs classify as public or private? I have an Engineering PhD and programming skills, and would love to work in Brazil. I'd love to come to Bahia or Manaus work the in sciences and operate a programming school on the side.
@JoeNaab
@JoeNaab 10 лет назад
Faculty jobs at all public schools, from grade school through University, are public sector jobs. At the universities they may have need for foreigners to teach certain subjects. I'm not sure. You'd have to dig into it more, maybe check with some universities. Private colleges and universities most likely offer private sector jobs. Foreigners could be hired for these jobs, subject to qualifying for the work visa. The teacher would probably have to teach in Portuguese, though there could even be some exceptions there, depending on the school and the subject matter. You're idea to start and run a programming school is a very good idea and there is a big need for it, especially if it's related to the internet, such as java, ruby, web design and such. You can create and own a business in Brazil with only a tourist visa. However, you can only live in Brazil six months out of the year and would need to manage the business from outside of the country, or shut it down for the six months you are away, or something like that. To live here year round you'd need to capitalize that business with at least R$150,000 of your own money, and then get the business investor's visa.

Be careful when buy property any kind. There are some case where the husband sold her apartment in New York, while the wife is in Brazil. And one day the wife will knock your door saying your place belongs to her. Make sure the paperwork does not lien, owners, etc Oh, even electricity, water, etc that were not paid for many years, and will bring you nightmare on your new purchasing home, land. Dont rush to buy, take all this world time to buy. When you rent you can move anytime if any shitty arises. Also you need check who will be your neighbor, you don't want a gheto neighbor next to you.

how does one get started finding a job and getting settled in brazil? i have a master in architecture, will that help me find a design job? and if i know spanish, can i get by until Im fluent in portuguese?
@Brazilforlife
@Brazilforlife 10 лет назад
I know very little about how to find a job in Brazil. Brazil has strict immigration laws and doesn't issue work visas unless the hiring company can show that a Brazilian can't do the same job. You might be better off creating your own architecture firm and applying for the business investor visa. You'd need to invest R$150,000 into the business to qualify. However, continue to research and ask around as there may be other people who have better answers for you. Brazil isn't a place where people show up without a plan and then go job hunting for a salaried job. Knowing Spanish will help you learn Portuguese faster.
@DG-ig1rb
@DG-ig1rb 9 лет назад
Not easy but not impossible. I just suggest you learn Portuguese (if you know Spanish it will be easy). The mid remuneration of an common architect is not too good (about $2.000 dollars), but you'll have some confort. Some professionals can get over $ 6.000,00 per month. It depends of experience, enterprise and, of course, a bit lucky and good 'networking'. You probably will not be rich(at less that you open your own enterprise), but will live well and maybe be happy if find what looking for. Anyway, I hope you takes that decision with responsibility and considering every possibility, including a plan B and other needs. Sorry my poor English.

Hey, could you please tell me how much in reais I would need to live a comfortable life in a place like Sao Paulo? Thanks
@Plahtyna
@Plahtyna 6 лет назад
Look, it honestly depends on what "comfortable" means to you. São Paulo it's the country's economic center and one of the most expensive places to live(not that others places in Brazil are cheaper lol everything is expensive here). I would say a minimum of R$6000,00 monthly. But it really varies depending on your lifestyle, expectations and of course, where you might live in the city.

I think there is not a 1st or 3rd world because almost all the countries have similar problems (poverty etc) in greater or lesser degree, specially by the immigration. Things aren't easy for India, with a huge population, and Brazil with a difficult social inheritance since the huge African slavery and border with many countries. The climate in Norway doesn't attract poor immigrants, unless they receive help to survive (in UK they're helped). So, they can keep a better general standard of life.
@LoyalNancy

Waytopluto, as you know because you live there, with exceptions, most Brazilians etc. who emigrated to the US went to make hard work, dreaming that could make much money anyway or at least more than in their countries, considering the stronger dollar. These jobs are bad paid in Brazil and this is not the case of most Americans here, searching for more qualified jobs lost in their country or better paid here, or investing their own saved money in a business in Brazil to get a permanent visa.

@meinc.6992
@meinc.6992 5 лет назад
Well, it's been 2 years, but... There are 2 types of "english teaching" jobs in Brazil: in "Normal/Regular Schools" and in "Language Schools" ("Escola de Idiomas"). As a foreigner, you can only teach in "Language Schools", but if you have English or Pedagogy degree (or other bachelor degree) you can then teach in a regular school (but you need to have proficiency in Portuguese, etc...). So search on web for sites of Language Schools ("Escola de Idiomas") and send them your CV. Example: search for "Escola de Idiomas Rio de Janeiro" for schools in Rio. In this article, they rank the best 50 schools in Brazil: aprendafalaringles.com.br/as-20-melhores-escolas-de-ingles-do-brasil-atualizado/ . You can, of course, work in online schools too.

But actually now we can see what happenes also in Europe...a dictatorship is established and even germans who visited Brazil claim that in Brazil you still can feel much more freedom as in Germany... Lets see what the future brings more out...

@@MarcosSilva-zx9ij I live in Europe. I have a masters degree in physical therapy which makes me 50€ (R$220) per hour in my country. Pre tax, that is. And our therapists are currently complaining that 50€ per hour is not enough. I'd probably make only 10% of that in Brazil. I consider working in Belgium for a decade or so, and then move to Brazil. Most Brazilians seem to think that money makes you happy and therefore Europeans must be happy. But the truth is that my country, despite having the world's strongest middle class, has the highest percentage of depressed people in Europe. We live in a society that expects you to work very hard and live in a big house. People compare to each other and always want more. I know many fellow travelers who are leaving because of it. I get that money is an issue in Brazil. But you have sunshine and happy people. Connections between people are so much deeper. I just miss that in Europe. Aside from money, there is nothing that can keep me here
