Working on A Windy Hill Casting and Restoring a Cincinnati Shaper

Just returned from Windy Hill Foundry with a casting that I had Clark pour for Don. For 5 years I looked for a bed clamp for an Axelson 16" Metal Lathe and finally found one! . Don and I both have one of these lathes and Don's needed the bed clamp also. SO I took my clamp to Clark and he made a Cast Iron Replica for the restoration project. Also a tour of Don's shop and many machine tool restoration projects going on.. Nearly finished with the cincinnati shaper!

Don’s a treasure. The amount of work he has done on his shop expansions would be a totally consuming hobby for most. But they just house his machine tool refurbishing hobby. Wow!

Maybe I should not rub it in that there are two sitting in my shop :) I keep thinking I need to get the 16 out of here but it is pretty good shape so I think I'll never see another one in this shape...

Good seeing you again Don, you have just about a perfect shop, plenty of room with every machine a well equipped machining shop needs. You buy tools really well, you look for good deals and bargain for them. You don’t buy a bunch of stuff just because it’s sitting there and fill your shop with so many machines that you can’t even get to them when you need to use one. You have most of your machines looking really good, probably because you aren’t overwhelmed with too much and you have the room to actually work on them. From what I can tell you only have two or three that need cleaned and repainted, I won’t say which ones, you already brought them up. Lol I’d like to see you use them sometime!

I use Permatex rust treatment on cast iron and it puts on a nice black coating. Give it a try I haven't even had to paint it after.

Steve, you need to use manganese phosphate solution for blackening cast iron. Gun blue is not the right stuff to use. After coating, apply Starrett M-1, not the Bullsh^t crap you mentioned. Ken Edit: Birchwood Casey sells the solution if you want to buy a 5-gallon bucket of the solution. Castwell may sell it in smaller containers. Yeah, you have to heat the parts/solution to around 125-150°F for decent results.

In my experience cast iron won't take a blue. A gunsmith friend wanted to blue some cast and said it finally was blue after a year in the bath, he ran bluing a couple times a week.

This one turned a nice black and looked good, for two days then rusted all to heck :(
@russkepler

@@10swatkins Most (all?) of the cold blues are selenium based. The lye bluing used by gunsmiths is a rust blue. The iron under the thin selenium modified layer can still rust unless you have the surface prepped before bluing so that oil will be retained, sort of how phosphating preps the surface. Minor differences in material will change how the bluing is taken. A cold blue on a high nickel alloy can look kind of red.

Please, tell me more about the sandblaster name volts working air pressure? I think I am impressed 73 dan
@donmadere4237
@donmadere4237 5 месяцев назад
It’s an Econoline vacuum runs on 110v, I have an 80 gallon air compressor running at 100 psi but there is also a regulator on the sandblaster but the pressure gauge is broken but I have the psi reduced I know below the 100 psi.

To tell the truth it's not the machine that is doing such a great job, it's the abrasive.. Forgot the name of the stuff but I will look it up if you ask.
