"Hey Joe, what's wrong with the spinner?" "It's broke". "Thanks Joe!" It's fun seeing the early Gottlieb SS system, thanks for your time and efforts Ron.

This is a Rockwell PPS-4/2 (Parallel Processing System-4 bit/2 chip) system. The 11660 is the CPU. The 10696 is a general-purpose I/O device. The 10788 is a keyboard/display controller, most likely for controlling the VFD displays. Axxxx chips will be mask ROMs. There should be one or two 10432 RAM chips as well unless they are using different RAMs. Wikichip says it uses PMOS technology meaning the drive voltage is negative with respect to ground (strange but true). My Sharp PC-1001 programmable calculator is Rockwell PPS-4 based and I believe it may have more than one CPU in it.

I wonder if anyone has tried to build simulators (reproductions) of these chips, even the ROMs, using modern SBCs?
@douro20
@douro20 2 года назад
@@GutsyGibbon Yes. The LISY project has produced a full implementation of System 1 and System 80 using a Cyclone II FPGA as an open-source project. There is even one from the same group which uses a Raspberry Pi running PinMAME but I would prefer to not go that far. There is also a very talented embedded programmer in Italy who has produced a replacement MPU which I believe is PIC-based and even provides a load of additional gameplay features which would not before had been possible.
@GutsyGibbon
@GutsyGibbon 2 года назад
@@douro20 Thanks, I was thinking more along the lines of just the spider things, but it probably makes more sense to simulate at a higher board level.

Brings back sad memories watching this... I bought this machine several years ago, it needed some work, but it was running and looked nice. The missis wasn't happy about it so I sold it for $200. Still hitting myself on the head for doing that. I did buy a comet in pretty bad shape with potential later on and completely fixed it up with my son, but I wish I still had this one too....

Fascinating Ron. I only have an EM but it is still so interesting to see you go through debugging this generation machine. Being an old timer, these "old" electronics look more familiar to me than the newest stuff. Each generation is interesting in its own right.

I know Gottlieb got a bad wrap for System 1, but I really like the design of System 1 machines. The Spider chips were issues yeah, bugger they are not easily replaceable. I love the way Gottlieb kept there EM technology in part of the Solid State machines too. Just makes them a little bit special in my mind. Your explaination of the Star Grounding system is absolutely spot on. It is the only way to guarantee ground potential is the same on all boards

glad you got it to boot and repin the driver connectors(i think the molex connector, plastic piece, has been obsoleted though), mine was bad and now has a niwumph. there is also a pixie board (pi-1x4 all in one), kinda pricy but does everything, that i'd love to see on that machine as it has an attract mode that seems pretty cool on the genie with a simular setup.

The only question i have is, why negative 12 volts. Shouldn't all voltage be positive?
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 2 года назад
For some reason the spider chips were designed to use negative voltage. Sometimes too they use negative voltage to create a higher voltage with the positive voltage (I think). So if you use the +12, and the -5 as a ground, you have a +17 for instance. These particular spider chips though specifically want the -12 for some reason, and they created it like that on purpose if you can believe it. Often they would make - voltages for the displays too, so they'd use +100 and -100, which can be used as 200v... .
@AndreSjoberg
@AndreSjoberg 2 года назад
Another quick question: if, after bootup, some lights are lighting up on the playfield, does that mean something might be shorted on the driver board (like you said) because of a possible fault with one of the spider chips?
@waynegram8907
@waynegram8907 2 года назад
JOE CLASSIC, Any reasons there is a "delay startup" on Gottiebs pinballs games? Each of those "spider chips" are considered MASKED PROM chips that have switch game code and lamp game code? because each spider chip has different prom game game for the switches and lamps. When a solenoid is shorted it will backfeed this shorted DC voltage back damaging the solenoid driver transistors and spider chips which you can "add blocking diodes" in series to the wiring connector solenoid wiring to prevent the shorted DC voltage from backfeeding in the wrong direction damaging the solenoid driver transistors and spider chips? You mention in the video about the IC chip 4528BC but What does the IC chip 4528BPC doing?

Hey Ron! Whom is responsible for the designer chip for this game? Was it Rockwell or Gottleib? Couldn't this specific spider chip use a rewritable code chip? Just spitballing questions here.

@AndreSjoberg 2 года назад
Quick Question: is there any way to check the spider chips using a multimeter?

So basically they put CPU, ROM, RAM, PIA etc. inside custom chips to make sure if any of them goes bad, you have to buy a replacement board. That's clever bussiness.
@robertlipsett2535

actually when you could get the chip it had to be replaced as a matched pair. two chips worked in tandem with one another.
