For what it’s worth, very few recreational golfers could play as well as you did in this video…..especially with extreme pain. I understand that you have a desire to play at a professional level and you should continue to strive for that for as long as it is important to you. That said, you are playing a lot of golf and earning a living doing so and making these videos is for the entertainment of the viewers. We viewers are far more interested in your personality, charisma and entertainment value than we are in your final score. So enjoy your day. You’re in a beautiful place, surrounded by birds and nature and sharing time with the love of your life. You are blessed man. Loved the video and sincerely appreciate the entertainment that you and your Good Good buddies bring to us each week. Keep tapping them in.

Best wishes to the both of you.

Matt, I refer to you all the time for my son who is just starting out. Your advice about keeping your ego out of the round helps so much in keeping him from reacting badly to poor shots and taking the smarter approach to the game - Can't hit driver today, put it away and hit the 3 wood or 7 wood. Have you ever considered the single plane swing? I have a bad back and since I transitioned to it I very rarely have any issues. It takes a lot of the torque out of the golf swing and, when done correctly, should not lose distance. Todd Graves has a great youtube channel with a lot of good info on it.

Granted at 54 years old I've got 30 years on you in age, but I'm 100% with you on the back pain. It's hard to take ego out of the equation and not hit the big stick. But I enjoy watching your game most of all. Not just using your physical skills but using your mental abilities to rethink your style of play. Praying that your next Dr visit will go well and that you stick with your therapy routine.

As a fellow back-problem sufferer, I know exactly what you're going through Matt. I've been forced to stay away from golf for 11 years, still waiting to get into surgery and, following that, hopefully getting back onto the golf course to swing a club or two again, because I miss it like crap. Stay positive man and take care. Best of luck.

Brother I’m 23 and had back surgery on my back when I was 16. I ended up herniating my disc on my L5S1 nerve during one of my baseball games. The excruciating pain would go from my left buttocks all the way down to my foot. I couldn’t stand up straight I was miserable. But after surgery and rigorous physical therapy for about a year it helped me get back on the field and play baseball again. I have to do stretches every day but after I knock them out I feel much better. My back will tighten from time to time but I will personally say surgery was worth it. I’ve also been playing golf the past 4 years and my back has held up. Good luck with your decision in the future I wish you nothing but the best🤞

Dude you crack me up. Talking to yourself like we all do. I personally think your swing looks as good as ever. Very smooth and easy tempo. I wonder if you slowed down a hair prior to approaching the ball to get mentally ready would help. Pulling for ya to get better. Patience man, it’s a hard game. I do like the fact when you hit a good shot but it doesn’t turn out it’s important to acknowledge hitting a good shot. Just as bad shots can work out. Crazy damn game!!

This is great Matt. To be blunt, your swing is looking great, especially in the last Major. You are hitting it better recently than in the past before you knew about the back issues. Like you said smart golf, not long bombs... plus you will always have a hole in one on a par 4, something .00001% of golfers can say. A series about golfing through back pain and struggles is a brilliant niche, keep at this one guys. Maddie, nice butt zoom shot, had me laughing.

Man I know what you're going through.. I had so much pain that my whole leg would cramp up and I couldn't even walk.. statarted in my butt cheek then went down the leg the more I stood on it.. I did all types of therapy.. I had an epidural and multiple cortisone shots.. in the end I had a small micro diechtomy? Best thing I ever did.. been playing golf for the last 10yrs pain free.. 111 mph swing speed and I can swing as hard as I want.. good luck

Hey Matt, I'm in my late 30s and have had pretty crippling back pain from getting rear ended when I was 17. My two biggest pieces of advice from my personal experience would be: 1: Get a red light therapy belt. This thing has worked wonders for inflammation and I basically just live in the thing on days where maybe I did something stupid the day before 2: Planking. It is one of the easiest, but also most effective ways to work all of your core muscles. I started by getting my baseline and then adding 10 seconds per session until I hit 5 minutes. From there I would try to do two five minute planks 5 days a week. Good luck! We are rooting for you

Swings looking great, Matt. Maybe it’s just the camera angles, but your setup looks pretty closed for someone that fades the ball. Im in a similar situation with lower back pain and opening up helped me realize how much strain I was putting on my “trunk” rotating through the ball. Being closed, I was turning my lower body hard left to get the body and club back to the target. Upper body stayed back tho and thats no bueno for the spine. Just a thought! Keep grinding dude

I dealt with some sciatica pain recently myself, took about 4 months before it went away while I was trying to play through it. Eventually just took three weeks off, stretched daily, iced my back as often as possible, until eventually it's dissipated. I had to change my golf swing to keep it away, too. Definitely something I can empathize with. Hopefully yours heals up as well.

Playing (or practicing) within your physical restrictions is the only thing to do if you want to be playing golf five or ten years from now. I have struggled with a bad lower back and hips for decades (72 now and lost my back in my 20s). It only gets harder unless you find a fix (usually surgery) or manage your expectations and ego. You can still be playing in your 70’s if you’re smart now. I just had to slow down a little and restrict my turn a little (not a lot). I played pretty well until I got into my late 60s and still do better than most senior players. Lost a little distance but accuracy keeps the score down.

Consider adding acupressure mat sessions to your recovery plan. 15-20 mins every day. Hurts at first, but you eventually get used to it. I fell asleep on mine for 2.5 hours once 😂 It definitely relaxes you a lot and eases some tension. Seems to help me with my back issues when combined with other, more active remedies. Whether or not it actually helps me at all, or it's the other exercises I do, I don't know. But I believe it helps, and that's what matters. A positive mindset for recovery is half the battle!

Matt! Fairway bunker tip: don’t move your head till 1 full second after contact, and don’t move your feet. Mostly upper body then just focus on contact. Not sure if it’s just me or not but that really helps and I’ve been money out of them for awhile.

Great video, always good to see a great golfer working through their process to improve! Would love to see a video with you working back from the green and see how that scores? Ie if you love the 110 yards shot into the green, what do you then hit off the tee to get there. For me, I love golf but am average so always try to find a yard into the green that’s 90-125

Matt - with fairway bunkers (I weirdly love them) I’ve always tried to stick to the following fundamentals 1. QUIET lower body. 2. 80% swing. Focus on ball-first contact, not power 3. Club up (assuming there isn’t a bunker lip in the way). Extra club will help with the lack of legs and 80% swing speed Keep up the grind buddy 👏🏻👏🏻
@brandonsandberg3500
@brandonsandberg3500 Год назад
Also worth noting… the shot you had @17:31 is a tough shot… but try to keep your shoulders parallel to the slope you’re standing on. When it’s uphill like that and you try to keep your shoulders balanced and not tilted to the slope, you’re increasing your chances of a mishit. Sorry.. hope this doesn’t come off as arrogance or a “know-it-all”… but I see a lot of myself in you and some of these simple tips can go a long way to breaking out of whatever plateau you may be on

Hey Matt. One of the hardest things to do in life is swallow your own ego. As being as athletic and talented as well as competitive, I understand that mentally you expect yourself to do well, and when it doesn’t go well it weighs on you. I was very athletic in my younger years (40 now) and a very competitive person when it came to sports, and still to this day I struggle with swallowing my own pride and just sometimes admitting I just don’t have it today, when mentally I expect my “A” game which in golf to your standards would be a F-. You just shown that you don’t need the big stick to do well, but that comes with swallowing ego/pride. Maybe one round just leave the driver at home, and play with your 3w or hybrid off the tee. Out of sight, out of mind. Not sure if you’ve mentioned it or not, but have you tried an inversion table for your lower back? Also a chiropractor? I know Dr. Tubio who has a channel is either based out of Houston or Dallas area, I can’t remember which, but he and his associates base their adjustments off of YOUR needs, and not just the same routine over and over like so many out there. I hope your healing process goes well. I would love to play a round with you next time you guys stop back up in Chicago. Be well young man, keep grinding.
