Workshop Cabinet with Modular Storage [video 467]

Continuing the workshop makeover, I found some inspiration from Michael Alm’s recent workshop tour video, and an old Adam Savage video, to make a set of workshop cabinets with modular storage. The nail gun module shown here is a ‘proof of concept’ design made from whatever scraps of sheet materials - mostly MDF - that I had to hand, but if it works out as I expect it to I can see myself remaking it in plywood. Enjoy!

Nice to see so many pieces screwed instead of the domino coming out. Far less frustrating to watch for us amateurs who cannot justify (or allowed to ) buy a domino. I still want one though !

I wouldn’t dream of using the domino for a simple workshop build like this! Screws work well, always have! 👍👍

I must admit that I over-engineer everything and put as much effort into stuff for my workshop as I do for stuff like furniture. I do that partly out of OCD (?) but mostly because it is just extra practice for the “real stuff”. The more hours; the more practice; the more experience; the more mistakes; the more swear words…. If you can’t justify a domino to yourself or SWMBO, dowels are excellent. With a few workshop made jigs - or from Banggood, you will lose very little over dominos - maybe speed?

Nice shop update. What works really well for me on a small shop is cabinets with doors where I add french cleats for holders onto the outside of the doors. I do this for marking tools, pliers, some PPE and so the space is fully utilized. I also have a magnetic kitchen knife strip on one of them for driver bits and scratch awls etc. Quick access on the outside, more bulky or less used things on the inside.

Great job Peter. 👏 I always look out for your videos. You're one of my favourite woodworkers on RU-vid! No love for the big Ryobi nail at the top left above the new storage unit? You might be able to fit the nail gun by laying it on it's side just below the new nail gun box if you raised the nail gun box up another shelf pin hole or two.

@10MinuteWorkshop 3 года назад

Looks good Peter. I must do something similar as I have tools everywhere. The cut away at the top definately helps access. Only thing that would annoy me is the bar for the pliers etc. as it blocks two of your shelves. I would do that seperately on the wall above your bench but as you say it is modular and easy to change if it doesn't suit you.
@10MinuteWorkshop

Thanks Matt. The idea is that the items ‘blocked’ by the hanging storage are the less-used; with any hanging storage they’ll always be blocking something if they’re at the front and accessible. 🤷‍♂️👍

Reconfigurable space is good in a shop. I always get lots of good ideas from you, and enjoy your videos, even though my workflow is very different. (I use little sheet goods, so a track saw would be less appropriate, for example.) A RU-vid channel that offers some interesting thoughts on organization and function in a quite different context (more random stuff) is "Keith's test garage".
@smitcher
@smitcher 3 года назад
Thanks Peter, that turned out great and has given me some ideas for my own small garage space. I did the pliers trick about a year ago and have to say it's probably the best thing that I ever did. Having them all on display (I've somehow got about 5x the amount that you have hanging) is great rather than in a drawer because now I try to use the most appropriate one for the job rather than making do with the first one that I find. I also added a few long nails sticking out (I chucked them in a drill and ran the heads on a file) to hold metric and imperial spanners and I use them a lot too. Incidentally I also got a bag of 50 of those neo magnets with the countersunk hole in them and they are great for rules, triangles, etc and i've also got a couple of coffee tins with commonly used screws and wallplugs for easy access and the magnets hold great; you can double or triple them for heavier things too. Looking forward to seeing what else you come up with...

@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop 3 года назад
Thanks! It does help to use a decent screw (eg Spax M-cut) and I typically pilot slightly less than the length of the screw, and 0.5mm thinner. So for a 4x40mm screw going through 12mm, I’ll pilot ~30mm deep with a 3.5mm bit. It’s not an exact science though! HTH P

Beginner question , why do you have so many nail guns, what's their use scenarios? Is there one I should start with?
@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop 3 года назад
There’ll be a ‘nailers and staplers basics’ video along soon, and I covered some of the very basic ground in the recent ‘my cheap nailer and compressor video - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eJo3JMkv3JE.html - but in short, the Ryobi is a battery stapler, the others are air nailers in different sizes - 23g, 18g, and 16g. A good general purpose nailer is 18g and they can be bought very cheaply. This is an extract from the script of the forthcoming video. Nail sizes are based around an old American wire-gauge standard, and the higher the number, the thinner the wire/nail. As I mention in passing in this vid, 23g nails are 0.6mm thick, 18g are 1.2mm, and 16g 1.6mm, and this continues all the way down to 12g at 2.8mm thick. The thicker the nail, the longer they can be - very thin nails bend if they’re too long - and the gauge of a nail usually determines the range of lengths available, eg 18g nails are from 10mm - 50mm long, 12g from 50-90mm long, and so on.The actual length of nail you can use is determined by the nail gun itself though eg just because you’ve bought an 18g nail gun, it doesn’t necessarily mean it can fire 50mm brads. Also, a combi nailer/stapler - a gun capable of firing brads and narrow crown staples - usually has a reduced nailing capacity as well, often restricted to a maximum of 32mm. As I say, it’s a bit topic/subject, and there’s lots more to come on it, but I hope that helps for now! Best, Peter 👍

Hi Clive. The MacAllister uses a clone of the Makita-pattern rails, so pretty much any rail clamp will fit. The Makita clamps were pretty good value screw clamps, but I’ve just had a ratchet clamp sent from banggood that seems to be pretty good too. Plenty of choice out there though. 👍👍

I agree. Drawers are the best. You can use the full depth of the space without crouching down. I have a mechanics tool chest that I use to great efficiency. Think of a workshop like a kitchen.

As always Peter, a well thought out and executed project that has something for everyone. Excellent mate. Quick question if I may Peter, how wide is your MFT bench? I’m using my track saw more and more and would like to replicate your Festol track that is on a hinge.

Hi Peter, hope your well. what kind of paint do you use when painting MDF?
@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop 3 года назад
Hi Gavin. Short version - Painting MDF Doors [video 407], ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZIwNJGlVtwc.html. Longer version, it’s almost always a water-based primer/undercoat, denibbed and with an extra coat in the cut edges. Denis again, then 2 - 3 coats of a water-based acrylic, typically in an eggshell or satin finish. Use a decent quality MRMDF to start with and the cut edges will come up very nice without any real effort. 👍👍

No change to the audio or respiratory problems, just going through some fairly extreme dentistry, which affect the voice. Also why I’ve gone to a fortnightly video, for the time being. 👍

Now if the sheet good prices drop down, I can make one. I’m redoing my shop, and discovered that i can buy metal “garage” cabinets from teh big box stores, for les than I can make them out of plywood, or MDF. Basically the local yard still doesn’t have anything besides MDO or ACX plywood in stock. One is super expensive, the other is overpriced, and ugly.
