One of the greatest World Cups ever. I was 19 at the time and home video was all the rage. I made a point of taping every single full match from the Round of 16 onward on VHS using our newly purchased home VCR. As captain of the school and later college football team, watching over and over some of the classics from that tournament (my favourite is still the Brazil-France Quarter-finals clash) helped raise my game significantly. Of course, it goes without saying that every boy and young man on the planet who's ever kicked a ball wanted to be Maradona back then. Fantastic times. I still have the original VHS tapes stored in great condition after transferring them to DVD. One of my most prized possessions. :)
At that time I was only 11 years old. I was born in Mexico so I had that great World Cup in my home country. I think it's still the best World Cup in my lifetime. Or at least the ones that I remember. Then in USA 94 I was lucky was already living here. So I've been so lucky to have lived in to countries that hosted this beautiful tournament.
The France v Germany semi final, in the 1982 World Cup, was a peach of a game too mate! The France v Brazil game you're talking about was a classic and had everything! 👍😎⚽️🍺
Damn right. Still one of my favourite World Cup matches of all time, and my top favourite match from that tournament. It was an absolute thriller between two teams loaded with legends.
Apparently Mexico 86 is still the best World Cup ever. Great stadiums, great goals, great games. Also, there´s something about playing on day time that makes it visually more appealing than night games. At least that´s my perspective.
In my opinion Brasil played Brasilian Football also in 2002. And they'd won. Ronaldinho's goal against England was one of the most clever goals I have ever seen. I'm from Turkey, we had finished third, Brasil had had Cafu, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Denilson, Roberto Carlos, a good playing team.
The USSR goals were great strikes (the ball for the 86 world cup was amazing and quite heavy by today's standards) so it traveled true in the thin air at altitude. There was something industrial and 'Soviet' about them. But looking back the England goals were indeed some of the best team goals of the tournament.
THEN YOU DONT KNOW FOOTBALL IF BRAZIL WENT FROM ONE END OF A PITCH TO ANOTHER WITH A PASS A INCREDIBLE FLICK AN AMAZING CROSS AND A VOLLEY IT WOULD BE IN THE TOP TEN GREATEST GOALS EVER STOP SUCKING UP TO THESE FOREIGNERS. LIKE YOU NEED FRIENDS
My first world Cup memory, and I remember the summer well..long hot one if I remember right.. earliest year I remember vividly 7 Yr old.. Playing out till dark pretending to be maradonna 🤔😊🔟🏆
Careca's goal was the best in '86......though my personal all time fave 'shot' was Belanov's goal (no.8 here)..just awesome best WCs were '78 '82 '86 period.
Every team, at least if they want to win nowadays, has adopted the European style which makes this World Cup one of the last ones where football styles truly clashed.
Brazil's goal against France was one of the great team goals. Some great strikes from outside of the box too. I think the quality of football in 1982 and 1986 was better than 1990 and 1994.
Without a doubt. Italia '90 was a dull world cup where defensive football dominated for the most part and tight games were won by very small margins by teams afraid to give an inch. I loved '94 but '82 and '86 were unreal.
@@octaviocgsa In the UK, people seem to deride the '94 World Cup and I reckon it's because England wasn't there. They also remember Italia '90 as a festival of carnival football where England played like the 1982 Brazil team so I'd imagine your opinion would be widely shared.
You know, about the first goal, it is well known in Hungary, that before 1990, it was not allowed to win against the USSR. Of course I am not satisfied with our football (time after time terrible performances and mistakes etc - EXCEPT Euro 2016 :D), but in these matches we HAD to lose. Otherwise.... The only thing in the first goal I appreciate is barely the goal itself, how it has been shot. Apart from this - sadness.
+Mark Shikhvarger ok, I was maybe too enthusiastic...I don't know if it was a "rule", and I think in other sports we have beaten them a few times, but that time in football, many said that this was the case.
A total BS. Hungary had defeated the Soviets a few years before 1986 WC and no one was shot. In 1986 the Soviet team (in fact Kyiv Dynamo) was just much stronger then their hungarian counterparts . Dynamo had won European Cup Winners' Cup a month earlier.
Fernando Arias just had a look, you were right!, don't remember this World cup, was only 5, some amazing goals by the Dutch in there. Of the later tournaments Germany 06 was probably the best along with Euro 2004. Football was a lot more exciting before the big money came in.
Fraser Charnock Yes, Arie Haan has a great goal against West Germany and the also dutch Brandts has two against Italy. Nelinho's goal against Italy is impressive. Of recent world cups, I prefer South Africa 2010. You have to take a look also to Paul Breitner's long range goal against Chile, in Germany 74.
@@satarello ... No he cheated get it right ... take away the cheating and it was 1-1 and England were playing the better football towards the end on 90 mins
Brilliant clip. One of the few times since 1986 I've seen Khairi's goal for Morocco. Few people remember it and never pops up on any 'best of' lists either.
Every time I see that Maradona goal I just scream at the screen for someone to clog him. English players were too honest for their own good back then. An Italian would have kicked him in to the stand.
Mexico 86 was the most fun I have ever had watching football, as an eleven year old boy. I had only gotten into football during the previous year in school. Going into school yawning throughout because I'd been up till 1am watching the late matches; classic stuff, we all did it. So much colour and excitement, no World Cup ever matched this one for pure romance. I guess it's a part of being a wee kid isn't it? By Italia 90 I was 15, and almost as cynical as the football I beheld...
swordghoti I was too young to be a part of the viewing crowd; by 1994/1998 ... I really started following the FIFA World Cup...I was around 3 year's old during Mexico 1986 FIFA World Cup and probably saw my dad watch it on TV.
so according to the BBC, Gary Lineker not only scored two of the best 20 goals at the 86 World Cup, he also scored the fifth best goal...you've got to laugh
+Angry Mike Do me a favour, it wasn't the 5th best goal in Mexico, nowhere near. There were shedloads better. The best team goal was Brazil's versus France. And Poland were crap in '86. Now take a chill pill.
I was thinking the same, not a single one of the goals by England deserved to be on the list. But, hey, it's the BBC after all so it makes sense that they were desperate to include some of their own...
The biased broadcasting cooperation at it again 😂 we all know linekers goals were nothing special 🙄 lineker could only dream of scoring a goal like laudrups 😁 proper skills 👍🏻
He fouled single handedly aswell. Its not the foul itself against england that bothered me too much, players make fouls but marradonna never admitted to it years later which angers me.
**Maradonna was just unstoppable* Nov. 25 2020: He finally found his inner peace 😂 Thanks me later everybody who has always been despised and roasted that small stoner hahaha lol😁
I think the 1986 World Cup She is the best, the most beautiful and the most wonderful He showed us the greatest player in history Football Diego Armando Maradona Maradona goal against Italy One of the most amazing goals of the tournament With his two goals against England (second) And against Belgium (second)... 🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷 10 🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷
Great memories. I used to have this clip on VHS tape - so thanks for the upload. The order of the goals was probably a bit random. Agree with Maradona and Negrete at 1 and 2. Josimar's against Poland should have been higher. The second South Korea goal - not sure if that deserved being in the list. Wasn't there another wonder strike by Belanov (Soviet Union) that could have been in there? The Soviets were the kings of the long range strikes (no Cold War pun intended) in Mexico 86.
So we (Hungary) are tied with Poland for conceeding the most number of beautiful goals on this World Cup. What fantastic matches they were! That was football! Damn it was 26 years ago.
Mexico ’86 will always be one of my most precious memories. I was 9 years old at the time and remember loving every minute of it. Oh, the late nights. 🥱 Right up until my father passed away, we would often recall, in particular, the Rats effort. It wasn’t necessarily the best goal, but it was just one of those outrageous strikes. Denmark were one of my favourite teams in that Would Cup, and I remember being absolutely gutted when Spain knocked them out. Another very memorable game was the Belgium vs Soviet Union encounter that finished 4-3 in Belgium’s favour. A simply unbelievable game! All of the goals within this compilation are special in their own right, but two I have always particularly enjoyed are the Josimar enteries. The one vs Northern Ireland is a thing of absolute beauty! @Brent Crude That’s a wonderful story regarding your VHS exploits - special times! When you think how the world has changed since then. 🤦🏻♂
Unfortunately after the 1986 World Cup teams started playing a lot more defensive which made for boring football. I prefer the free flowing, back and forth action of years past. Will we ever see that kind of football again?
Nope, because it's a business now and all about money! In the past teams would just go for it, but now the fear factor has set in, as nobody wants to lose the lucrative incentives that come by being in The Premiership, etc! 👍⚽️😎
The 82 and 86 World Cups were something special agreed and the first two I saw, but aside from the negative Italia 90 and slightly boring South Africa 2010 I think all the other WC's since 86 have still been memorable in their own right, USA 94 was brilliant apart from the final itself. Remember how good Sweden, Bulgaria and Romania were in that? Germany 2006 had more long range screamers than any tournament I recall and the last two World Cups in Brazil and Russia were very entertaining and high scoring.
The other part of the equation in why the WC have gone downhill, is FIFA and their over the top PC bullshit. All stadium decoration now is done basically by FIFA Uniforms now all look the damn same and now FIFA limits that originality of the uniforms, the fair play BS, the kids coming out with the teams, on and on.....it’s so damn choreographed it’s become stale! What used to be the strength of the WC was seeing the host country showing off its culture and the colors of the spectacle, also the team uniforms originality because back then each country would have their kids designed by their own national brands and so you had very distinct unis 👍🏻 Today it’s either shitty Nike where Brasil’s unis look the same as....Mexico’s or any other country being sponsored by Nike 👎🏻👎🏻 Fucking horrendous
What a World Cup that was, incredible quality on show from so many great teams and players. Makes the modern World Cup tournaments look very tame in comparison.
"...again, the pass back was seen early by Edinho and that long kick has found Careca, who's got just one defender in front of him, is he going to back heel this for Edinho?! He is! He's walking in...!" Brilliant goal and commentary (from Tony Gubba I believe).
Football was so wonderful then. Every nation had its own philosophy and style. 0:26 3:01 3:52 Soviet Power 1:07 1:27 2:10 5:29 Brazilian Carnival 1:44 4:46 English Incision 2:46 5:04 French Elegance 3:30 Danish Flair 4:30 5:58 Diegol 5:42 Latin Skill 0:53 2:35 4:12 Just plain glory strikes And here were 20 more goals where that came from: each unique. Italian passion, German discipline and Dutch technique weren't even in there. Now? Doped-up glorified 5-a-side, with unchanging technique.
World Cup 1998 was VERY good and had many pulsating matches. (Argentina vs England - Argentina vs. the Netherlands) (Brazil vs. Denmark - Brazil vs. the Netherlands) (Mexico vs. the Netherlands) (Italy vs. Chile) (Spain vs. Nigeria)
@@uyscuti3537 .....Argentina vs the Netherlands on paper could've easily been the Finals in 98. Imho one of the top 10 best WC matches I've ever watched.
Just watching this whilst the current, awful 2018 edition is on. Wonderful, real football players not tattooed athletes with huge bank balances. Brazil still looked like Brazil, by 1990 they had began to change to a more European style. Maradona, still the greatest...huge personality and bravery. Players could shoot, none more so that the excellent Soviet Union side. Denmark...simply wow. Manuel Negreté and Hugo Sanchez for Mexico. Players were composed, skilful and showed conviction...especially in the final third. 2018 is a culmination of what started in 1990 although we did get a few wonderful players into the 1990s...Zidane, van Basten, Bergkamp, Romarìo, Stojkovic etc.
Roger Mellie Correct Roger,i didn't even watch or look at scores this world cup and stopped watching football 3 year's ago,but I still watch 80s and 90s on RU-vid
I've watched ever World Cup since 1978 and the 86' edition was the best by some way. There were more great teams and players present than any other. Just for a start there were probably about 10 goalkeepers there better than anyone around today! Brazil, France, Germany, Denmark, Belgium, USSR, Argentina, Italy, England and Spain all had absolutely top quality teams.
Philliben1991 It's a shame really, how low England and France's men's national football teams have sunk...maybe even for the foreseeable future !? I am waiting to see how they will pull themselves up in the next few FIFA World Cup cycles. Also, the USMNT was robbed of a spot in the final 32 teams ; thanks FIFA...way to go ! A ball on the goal line isn't a goal, unless the entire ball passes said goal line...VAR and or goal line technology would of really helped out in the CONCACAF region's qualifying matches. Panama and Costa Rica are super lucky/fortunate to have grazed by the aurduous qualifying process; I will be supporting Mexico and maybe Costa Rica come June 2018...no offense to the other 30 nation's. 👍💪⚽🏆
Don’t forget the Mexican team that made it to the quarter finals and lost in penalties to Germany, where they should have actually won in regulation.......and why the fuck did Mexico not play that game in the Aztec stadium? They play there they beat Germany... instead they play the game in Guadalajara! Yeah I think some games are rigged
The top 5... Should have been like this: 1. Maradona surely 2. Negrete 3. Maradona vs Belgium 4. Tigana 5. Josimar P.S: none of Lineker's goals in the top 20 😂😂😂😂😂
My dad died that year, at the end of June. It was the first World Cup, that I didn’t watch since 1970. (I was only 3.5yrs in 1966. I remember World Cup Willie (a rather unfortunate name for a mascot! I a small plastic statue with a ball bearing in its base. It’d probably be worth a bit now!) In 1986, we only put the final on, so we missed all the great goals from the tournament. My dad didn’t follow league football, but he loved the World Cup and the European Cup Competitions. He used to say “it’s 22 grown men chasing a leather bag of air about”. It’s a shame he died mid-way through a World Cup, it completely ruined it for us and we had to wait another 4 years. How thoughtless, he could have at least hung on and died in August instead of June......that’s a joke before any weirdos on here start moaning.
Watching videos of Mexico 70 and Mexico 86 make me even sadder that countries like Russia and Qatar were able to buy....errrrr i mean "awarded" something as beautiful as a World Cup tournament.
I disagree. Still better than any WC since then. Great games like: Arg vs Brazil Ger vs Holland Italy vs Arg Engl vs Ger Engl vs Belgium Engl vs Cameroon etc Both semis went to penalties and featured great teams. I think the worst World Cups took place in countries that don't have football as their #1 sport
ABForever Nope....I saw both play...live. Mardona was outstanding...but Pele was out of this world. Pele has three world championships scoring twice in the 1958 final at the age of 17, scored 1363 goals. Hard to surpass don't you think? Besides...Pele is an excellent human being...Maradona is an arrogant scumbag, cocaine addict, cheater, got kicked out of the 1994 World Cup due to the use of "enhancing illegal drugs"...and the saga of stupidity goes on and on. The personal qualities weigh in too.
Maradona easily scored the best goal in history in this tournament, and in the same game he scored another goal that got voted number one on this list.
@hugodrax71 I have to agree . I can't remember anything memorable from the 2002 & 2006 world cups , and this world cup has been tedious at best . France 1998 was the last good one in my opinion .
@hugodrax71 It's no coincidence that the past three crappy World Cups were all the one's played after adidas abandoned their peerless "Tango" footballs and attempted to reinvent the wheel with the increasingly ridiculous balloons they provided for the 2002, 2006 and 2010 World Cups, reaching their nadir with last year's godawful Jabulani "football". STOP RUINING THE WORLD CUP ADIDAS! BRING BACK THE TANGO!!!
Agree, the Azteca (synthetic Tango) didn't need any further "improvements", and it's so weird they get introduced in a World Cup and suddenly goal keepers have a hard time blocking shots.
Greatest World Cup in every sense. Not least the fact Mexico had 2 years to build new stadiums while still trying to recover from a devestating earthquake in ‘84. And to think the Tournament may have never happened as a consequence?
besides Maradona's goal being number 1, I thought Careca's goal against France was easily the 2nd best. Brilliant one touch lead up and cracking first time finish
Italia 90 was an AWFUL world cup, worse than any of the recent world cups. English people tend to slobber over it because we did so well but 90% of the matches were awful stalemates decided by a lucky or standard goal.
It had a glamour about it, and after Mexico european kids could see all the games, so its immortalized for quite some years in the young minds of the time. Looking back later (without the sticker albums and now I'm allowed to stay up as long as I want) it probably wasn't a classic edition at all.
I liked Italia 90. It was a low-scoring tournament, but I appreciate goals that are scored the hard way. Italia 90 had: a) many players with personality (Maradona, Gascoigne, Baggio, Milla, Caniggia etc), b) many suspenseful matches, c) drama (Maradona's & Gascoigne's tears), d) an indomitable underdog (Cameroon), e) great atmosphere in a major footballing country It was the last colourful world cup, before big business & globalization turned the competition into a money-making behemoth and crushed individuality/character in players & teams.
I wish the 1982 final had been between Brazil and France. That would've been the greatest final ever! The Brazilians of Europe against the French of Latin America!🏆⚽🍻⚡
