Soviets invaded Afghanistan in the 80s. They lost/pulled out. The US supported the Mujahideen. CIA supplied them with stinger missiles to knock out the soviet gunships that were tearing them up. As we all know now, that little move came back and bit us in the a** on 9/11 .
@@EddieLeal Well to be frank, the Mujahideen weren't a single group, but multiple groups who opposed the Soviets with varying ideals, one of those groups would be the precursors to the Taliban and Al-Qaeda, while others were precursors of the Northern Alliance. The Mujahideen pretty much hated each other but formed a coalition out of common opposition against the Soviets, so the US pretty much supplied anyone who opposed them, either they were moderates or fanatics.

It got all the attention it deserved. WiC was extremely well received, got overall good scores and sold pretty well (being in top charts for a while). The only reason we never got a sequel is because the golden era of RTS came to an end and the genre became less popular. Massive Entertainement later worked on a Farcry 3, Assassin's Creed and The Division which were more popular genres at the time.
@@Cowkill Exactly! Now everyone is rushing out online shooting games so that they can sell season passes and lootboxes. I beg to differ. The reason I hated the game story was exactly because of to the shitty propaganda. The american tank commander was a craven coward, murderer and a war criminal but he died a hero. While a prominent russian commander had to be turned evil because, reasons... Not to mention that for some reason the colonel suddenly realises that he and his men are the bad guys... Not biased my ass.
@@stefanstoyanov7460 Big disagree. Kolya wasnt evil per se, given what he's been through and indoctrination of propaganda, it's not unreasonable to see him act the way he did. @@stefanstoyanov7460 Comment above is right IMO. Good men turn bad in situations like this. I mean, civilians blending in and then attacking later? Almost like theres been a few unpopular wars like that
Well yes and no. It showed the more human aspect of both sides rather then just Yankees good, Ivan bad. That was still premier with the characters but yeah
Game was ahead of its time. The story was just as great. Focusing on each person's story from redemption, revenge ,friends, honor and loyalty. Gives you a unique perspective on how each characters story unfolds.
An unintentional war crime. Bannon was like most young bucks, looking to prove themselves. Dispite his screwups, none of the 4 except him made the ultimate sacrifice for his country.
Bannon had heart, but he was flawed. He becomes more and more humane the more I see his cutscenes. Earnestly, if the times were different, I can see Sawyer taking Bannon under his wing and mentoring him into a fine officer. Heck, in the initial Seattle invasion, he basically acts like a young Sawyer to begin with.

The Army banter in this game is so on-point. Definitely a bunch of Army guys that either developed or were involved in the development of this game. What a masterpiece.
considering that it is a Swedish studio that developed the game so the chance is that the majority of the developers had done mandatory military service before they worked on the game

"A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one." In all seriousness, I ADORE this game. Partly because 1/3 of it takes place in my home state of Washington IN A GOOD WAY. Plus it puts the Real Time in Real Time Strategy. Plus the fire support options are just a delight to call in and watch fuck up the opposition. I'm also a big fan of the developers. When they wanted to move on but saw that their game still had a cult following, they released the source code onto the internet. Plus the permanent scarring of the land when you call in fire support is another massive treat.
The most amazing thing about this game is the graphics have aged like fine wine. Some of the models are a little angular, but everything - and I do mean EVERYTHING - looks just as good as it did when it first released. And the story was something you'd just never see today.
If I ever make a military game, I'd want it to look like this. Not only because it already looks good, but because the graphics are low enough to run on slower computers, allowing for more people to play with fewer problems
@@DEFC0NZER0How's the multiplayer these days? I wanted to play with my friends for nostalgia sake but I see the servers are down, so how do I go about playing online with my friends again outside of LAN?

17:44 I love this conversation. Dvds were phasing out VHS's around that time. And the conversation sounds how Americans would conversate too. Many games, they just have soldiers talking about fighting, plans, tactics..etc
''There is no room for truth on that machine'' A sentence so simple yet so powerful given the current situation they were in, reality was already right in front of them, Orlovsky saw the truth in the future, while Lebedev, although having denying what truth he wants to fight for, but in the end he came around, not for the sake of the machine, but for his comrades who will live on to fight another day, maybe for themselves, not for the machine.
@@culturalliberator9425 Lebedev has the Minister of Defense as his father in law. I doubt anything bad would happen to him. Although, heads would indeed roll (maybe something akin to Stalin-level purges of officers). And should the truth of the costly Soviet defeat in America were to reach the public (which would have been inevitable at some point), there would be civil unrest within the Soviet Union. The Iron Curtain was already cracking prior to the war starting. The ground war in Europe was successful but came at a high cost and was in a bloody stalemate. In time it would prove to be a short lived victory, and a pyrrhic one at that. The United States would be back on the offensive, and the failure of the Soviet invasion of the West Coast would cause many Americans to join the fight. Patriotic volunteers would swell (like what happened after Pearl Harbor) and may help turn the tide in Europe. Just as Nazi Germany paid a high price for failing to defeat the USSR, the Soviet themselves, exhausted and having endured heavy casualties in Europe and America, may face a similar fate. But I like to think the main goal of NATO (which was in similar circumstances in terms of casualties) at this point was to gain back what was lost. Invading Russia itself never turned out well. However, the Warsaw Pact might be on the brink (and pissed off at the USSR for wasting their men in the US) and some nations may turn on their Russian allies. Germany more than likely since their country was the most heavily damaged during the war. NATO could try to take the Baltic states and maybe push into Central Europe to take Poland if it was possible. From my time spent there, the locals don't care for the Russians. But given the high cost that has been paid in the war, NATO would return to the bargaining table and pressure the Soviets to sue for peace. I think 3 World Wars in one century was three too many for all involved. After the liberation of Seattle, China decided to go back on their deal with the Soviets and stay out of the fight and play the long game; letting the Superpowers kill each other and play their hand when the opportunity presents itself. I don't know the situation in Asia, but it's likely countries like Iraq and North Korea invaded their neighbors while the superpowers were distracted. South Korea would have a tough fight, but I doubt North Korea would be able to win without help from the USSR or China. Japan would probably be planning for a Chinese Invasion. So maybe there would be a Pacific Front in WW3, who knows. As expected, the rest of the world would be in a complete mess. The lack of aid and support from a war weary U.S., Europe, and USSR may cause new wars in explode in places like Central & South America, Africa, and the Middle East. I did mention Iraq before. It was the major military power in the ME at this time so Kuwait is likely screwed. Desert Storm will likely not happen after the end of WW3. The rest of the Gulf States would have a tough fight against Iraq without Western aid so they may just let Iraq keep Kuwait. Iran suffered greatly during their war with Iraq, but they may fear starting another war. It could unleash a massive war in the Middle East with the Gulf States taking them on instead of Iraq alone. Syria and Lebanon as their only allies may not be enough. Still, a Middle Eastern Theatre of WW3, or really a Sunni vs Shia war could happen. Lebedev is a shrewd man. He probably saw how fruitless the American invasion was and knew what was coming as did Orlovsky. The ending hinted that Lebedev is planning something when he returns home. Probably taking part into some internal struggle for power in the USSR. I think WW3, or at least the one in Europe, would end with a coup in the Soviet Union; similar to its fall in our timeline as hardliners tried and failed to take control of the Russian government. A sequel could have opened up new campaigns for these scenarios that go beyond the American vs Russian ones. But we'll never know.
Well, none if them was supposed to return home in the first place. The Soviet invasion of America was supposed to force them to back off from Europe and pave the way for the Red Horde.
@@cashwat210 I think, and I could be conflating this with one of the Tom Clancy books, that in WiC's timeline the USSR is experiencing a massive grain shortage and reaches out to the West for aid and didn't get any, which allowed them to whip up war support and justify an invasion of Europe. I'm rather curious about what the Middle East was looking like during WiC. As for Asia... Stalin spent a week or so cutting down occupying IJA forces in China, and if I remember right he didn't bother giving the territories back. The Chinese might well have decided to reclaim those territories by force in this hypothetical post World War 3 world.
The battle of burger king... I remember it for I was in it...it started when a small improvement to the whopper happened... a impossible whopper... and the line was l- oh you mean that

One of the most beautiful games that I've ever played, a masterpiece that all the RTS players should play once time at least! Thank you for this video!
What I liked about the game most were its little bits of heroism. In one cutscene the Americans are watching the Russians parachute in at night and a Abrams rolls up. The driver pops out but he's not in uniform. He's in a black vest, he looks like a biker. Leads you to think, maybe he's ex-Army. They need people so badly they're recalling veterans. When we are introduced to Captain Bannon and Parker, the Seattle Police are at the barricades firing their revolvers at the oncoming Russians. Their pistols against an army!
Wow, the Soviets are extremely reserved considering how they treated the populace of other countries they've invaded. Not to mention the fact that Amaricans actually fight back.
@@Chinmeng420 That's a funny excuse. I don't remember them stopping when they went to the heart of Germany or to Japan, the ones that had never even set foot on their soil. We both know the truth don't lie.

World in Conflict is by far the most UNDERATED strategy game I've ever played. I'm so happy that I got a key on Steam when I did. Such an amazing game.
I remember loving this game as a kid. I appreciated how, in a similar fashion to the original Red Dawn, you get to see both sides of the conflict and can sympathize with some of the enemy characters. Even though I got pretty invested in _defendin' muh couuuntry,_ I remember liking Colonel Orlovsky a lot; he seemed like a noble guy who didn't deserve to be there. He was also pretty smart about avoiding pissing off the occupied populace any more than necessary, whereas most villains would probably just double down on the repression and needlessly exacerbate the situation. On a side note, I love how quickly the cops at the beginning of the invasion just nope the hell out of there when they see the HINDs coming at them. They don't do anything cheesy like stand there so you can get a close-up shot of their reactions or anything like that, they just instantly jump back in their cars and hit the reverse like "Oh FUCK, I'm not getting paid enough for _this!"_
Kinda odd how NATO, standing just a few feet away, didnt notice the build-up of tanks in East-Berlin and didnt even listen in on that nice speech at 06:00 LOL
They were, if you play the game, your met with a horde of M1 Abrams. Later, they'll perform an all out attack with hundreds of armor just for it to get flattened by Tu-95s(How? I wish this game got the attention it deserved (and a remaster would be dope). There's obviously the inaccuracy but again alternate history games rock! Another thing to note is that the Soviets should've cut the trans-Atlantic cable that connects us to Europe. We wouldn't be able to communicate with the Euros or even our own units stationed there.
I would buy a remake/part 2 of this game for me and all my friends. I still play it occasionally, just to feel the nostalgia and mechanics of a well balanced yet simple RTS game. This game is underrated and made by a great studio that sadly got eaten up by the vastness of Ubisoft.. Shame..

I like that they decided to make characters in this game as opposed to soulless archetypes. Bannon, the man in france who had something to prove, to the failson, doomed to shame in Seattle, eventually gaining the recognition he desperately wanted but not merely for personal accolades. Paying the ultimate price.
Man .... Didn't even remember the story to be so ... human. For a story about nuclear weapons and global war it really looks a lot into the characters. They really didn't have to do that but they went the extra mile. Amazing !!! :D
