To add on to what the other guy said, systems like the NES are very well understood and emulated at this point. A lot of times, when there is a way you can make a game crash (like doing the wrong-way pipe clip without proper setup) there is a way to manipulate the memory and turn that crash into whatever you want.
@goofyahhgamer4827
@goofyahhgamer4827 3 года назад
yeah they essentially manipulate the memory with the koopa shells which have little tags of letters and numbers assigned to them, and when they trigger the game crash (which is because of a glitched note block) the little tags on the koopa shells create a string in the memory that loads the end cutscene, its a bit more complicated though edit: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WWbZFj-cLvk.html bismuth made a good video about it and goes into more detail

@bluestar636 6 лет назад

@Decidetto
@Decidetto 6 лет назад
Both the Wii and NES were designed for NTSC televisions obeying the standard of 59.94 fields per second, and they _are_ both running at their designed, full speed, so neither is performing worse than the other. The difference is simply that modern televisions are a lot more picky about which signals they do or don't like, while an old tube television will happily display any signal as long as it isn't too far off-spec. When the NES was new, tube televisions were the only thing around, so it being slightly off-spec with the FPS wasn't a problem at all. However, when the Wii was being designed, game consoles simply had to stick closer to spec, to ensure their output could be displayed by every television on the market. That is why the Wii gets ever so slightly lower FPS than the NES.

I really hope for OoT video as well, but I hope he make a few more videos first. It's a REALLY big game in the community, and the route has been modified several times. All new routs are based around another major, completely new, glitch that suddenly came into existence. The quality in the first WRProgression video was really good for a first, and from then it has only went up. Reaching this level of quality in this video is a really nice progression, but come on. It's OoT. It needs to be almost as perfect as the speedruns themselves!

@jojoversus1100
@jojoversus1100 4 года назад
I know this video is old, but I cant help but feel like your descriptions of TAS's are shallow and unfair. It's not always just programming inputs. Most TAS runs are actual people putting months and months into hundreds of thousands of save states, replays, and several other things that go into it. Its arguably harder to TAS a game perfectly than to play it RGA, just because it takes so much more time, effort, and knowledge to pull them off. A good TAS run is usually the culmination of years of practice and work by small teams of people. Like the 100% Ocarina of Time TAS. Its insanely impressive. I just cant help but think that you feel negatively about TAS runs from the way you describe them. I do love your videos though and will continue watching. Subscribed. :)

These videos are so freaking awesome. You're really refining your storytelling. The ending of this one was spine tingling. Well done. Any chance we could get something about Goldeneye 007? I remember in college ('97/'98?) my friends and I buying disposable cameras, taking pictures of our times, taking them to a drug store that developed the film then transferred the photos to CD-R, then emailing the pictures to a website in Canada that kept track of "record times." We got in vicious wars of words with the site owner over our "fake times." Was exciting until we found out the site owner was 13 years old and videos started showing up online that proved our times were unexceptional at best. Ah, the good old days when being better than anyone on your street made you think you were the best in the world. Now your own feeble insignificance is only a click away.* *These have been a the completely unrequested musings of old man Wells.

What I'd really love to see for all these games you cover is the 100% runs. While the glitches are crazy hard to pull off, I think it'd be cool to see people use nothing but their raw skill and endurance to power through every single level.
@jlushefski
@jlushefski 5 лет назад
I agree, and I think pretty much all non-speedrunners would too. You want to see people mastering the games we played, not skipping the whole thing.
@duffman18
@duffman18 5 лет назад
He's done that a few times, covering the 100% category of a game too. But it's ridiculous to claim these players are somehow bad because they "skip the whole thing". Like mitch flower power in this video has held the world record for mario 3 100% too. He's an extraordinarily good player

Morimoto's TAS is the run that eventually led me to SDA in 2005 and onward to all that good-times spicy speed-drama, so it has a special place in my heart. Shame you didn't talk more about Frezy and Kirua, but I get that time is limited. Frezy was so fundamental a part of the speedrunning community in the late-2000s-early-2010s that it feels bad to more or less skim over him in favour of Mitch, and Kirua was so active in the years that followed pushing all categories downward that a mere passing mention in an SMB3 video (even one about his weakest category) makes me sad. Like I know you have creative license to make a narrative about "that one speedgod of the game," but I feel like all of these videos need a common language to show the dominant forces in the game's adjudicators. Moving from TG to SDA to SRL and whatnot. All the games you've covered experienced these transitions but you consistently portray them as independent of one another. This isn't about your vids being crap though! I really enjoy them, but I think there's room for a video putting out an explanation of like "Before 2005, the rules were dumb because of TG, then things got more free-flowing because of SDA, then around 2011 the degree of collaboration skyrocketed because of SRL," then in individual videos call back to that using a common language. With your videos having an inherent obsolescence, there's always room for a refresh of done topics. Don't sweat it though, these vids have improved massively since your first forays out of MTPO, I expect they'll continue to do so.

What if they added a WR for 1 hand, 2 hand, and 3 hand? So if RNG fucks you you can still try to run a different record? I realize this is probably a very very dumb idea, but thought I'd throw it out there
@CarmsCelestia
@CarmsCelestia 6 лет назад
Tbh, 3 hand runs would be easily doable, as you can manually enter the worlds iirc. (I recall me doing that because you get power-ups at the end of them)

Or you know, just disregard the time on those "optional" levels so they don't screw entire runs.
