I know the main thing about your channel is about your sewing/crafty projects, but I just want to compliment you on the editing of your video, the use of music, and the addition of kitty Dora! The way you synced up when your ads comes on when you finish speaking, not in the middle of the sentence. (chef kiss) It may seem silly to mention all this so you, but you are making content one wants to watch and not gets taken out of it by noticing show shaky your camera is or how loud your music is compared to the volume of your speaking voice. BTW ... I totally get your feelings about not only dealing with the pandemic but all the fires on the West coast and just like you're happy to make your videoes, we are glad to have them to watch. Please stay safe.

What a great idea using a circular table cloth. I sew heaps of circle skirts for children's s costumes, and hemming them is a real chore. Note: we sew all our circular skirts with an elastic waistband, so that they fit a number of differently sized kids. Instead of sewing the elastic to the top of the skirt, we sew on a waistband, and then thread the elastic through the waistband. (We leave the gap in the waistband were we thread through the elastic open, so we can adjust the elastic to fit a number of different waist sizes).
@LadyRebeccaFashions
@LadyRebeccaFashions 3 года назад
I used to do waistbands that way, too, and for multi-size costumes, that works really great, though I find that the elastic tends to twist, and sometimes the fabric casing can look really bunchy. Ever since Joanns started selling the wide flat waistband elastic, I have pretty much switched to this method (since it just has to fit me anyway). It makes for a very clean look.

Use the circle you cut out for the waist to make a patch pocket!! Although, applique leaf shaped pockets in fabrics that match the leaves would also be VERY cute haha
@LadyRebeccaFashions
@LadyRebeccaFashions 3 года назад
I actually played with that a bit, both as a single large pocket (which I didn't love), and two smaller pockets, but if I matched the leaf pattern, then the pockets wouldn't be even on each side, and that would drive me crazy. I have thought about a leaf-shaped pocket, too, but haven't played with it yet.

Cat help! Yup, you know you like the help when you start considering a decoy ironing surface! Last year I had a DUH moment when I turned a round table cloth into a Christmas tree skirt! Love the Hussif costumes! I just started designing mine, thanks to you!
@LadyRebeccaFashions
@LadyRebeccaFashions 3 года назад
Lol, yep. I haven't had to give her a decoy yet, but I do wind up transferring her from my sewing chair to the table and back all the time, depending on what I need to use. ;) And I've heard of people turning Christmas Tree skirts into wearable skirts as well, though generally I think those wind up a lot shorter. But the three are still pretty interchangeable. Good luck on your costume!
@doglover1neo
@doglover1neo 3 года назад
For a too short circle skirt / table cloth you can add trim to the hem! If trimming the hem is not an option, adding a placket with hooks and eyes at the waist. For a safer/comfortable needle option is eva foam rods. They are soft and flexible, so sitting and walking would be more pleasant than wooden rods.
@LadyRebeccaFashions
@LadyRebeccaFashions 3 года назад
But then you're adding work to the super simple project! ;) Good to know about the foam rods. I did wind up trying out sitting in these, and though my lap totally went away, they didn't stab me!
@FlybyStardancer

I was going to suggest trim too! And if you get one with the edges finished, it only adds a little more sewing to the project. :)

I'm going to attempt an October skirt for myself out of a black/orange squared pattern tablecloth and am so freaking excited. ps, I need to remember to buy extra air filters before fire season this year. What a cool idea for a circle skirt. I've got to try it! By the way, if I were going to make giant needles, I'd probably use cheap wooden chopsticks instead of dowels. They already have a tapering shape, and are probably easier to drill through. (If you want bigger ones, there are large cooking chopsticks that are bigger than the regular ones.)

Thanks for the tutorial! 💝 Yes, the round hem and that the fabric may stretch out and the skirt ends up wanky is holding me back to make a whole rainbow of circle skirts. 😅 I already looked for round table cloth, but for now i found only two oval shaped.. one is dark green with leaves and i am considering to make a cape/ poncho with it. 🤔 The other one might end up as one layer of a more historiv inspired skirt.. What kind of stitch you used for attaching the elastic?
@LadyRebeccaFashions
@LadyRebeccaFashions 3 года назад
Someone on instagram mentioned that she has used oval ones by cutting the two rounded ends off and just seaming them together. Might be worth trying! I just used a straight stitch for attaching the elastic. And if you are making a circle skirt from scratch, definitely let it hang for a couple days before you hem it.

Those appliques are so cute! A lot of work but it really paid off, it makes the entire outfit pop. It's just so gosh darn cute! Little question though, what is the "satin stitch" you used? It kinda looks like a zig zag with minimal distance between the stitches...
@LadyRebeccaFashions
@LadyRebeccaFashions 3 года назад
Thank you! And that's exactly what it is -- a zigzag stitch with a stitch length set at about .3, I believe.

It is probably late, but you can get spray adhesive for quilting, for applique, and there is also washable glue stick for english paper piecing. Very post hoc advice, which you probably didn't need anyway.
@LadyRebeccaFashions

I had actually forgotten about spray adhesive, though I have used that before. But this actually worked fine without any adhesive at all!

That tablecloth hack is GENIUS. Time to go browsing… what size (length) tablecloth do you normally look for? I’m pretty sure we’re similar height (and measurements, so I guess be glad I’m not in Seattle anymore or you’d get constant invites to clothing swaps 😂), and wouldn’t mind just learning from your trial and error here.
@LadyRebeccaFashions
@LadyRebeccaFashions 3 года назад
Thank you! It depends on what length of skirt you want. Basically, you want a diameter that is twice the length you want, plus the diameter of your waist measurement.

Yeah, that would have been a good solution, but I don't actually own any! I tried superglue (which did not work), but the masking tape is actually doing surprisingly well.

I would add patch pockets, probably, since there are no side seams.

If I wear a skirt that is equal length all around the back is shorter than the front. So I put the circle front of center. I just made one from a slightly oval cloth it was hard to find the center.

Button holes for the needles might work.

I was wanting to not fully finish the holes, actually, since that would take away how tightly fitted the holes are to the needles.

I like how the hussif fancy dress has turned out so far. Are you going to make a mop cap for the pin cushion hat?

Thank you! It's going to be sort of a modified mobcap. I'm still working out the details of how to get the pins to stay! That will be in next week's video.

I love that measuring tape waistband, but I would have offset the closure to the side under the hanging part...this is one of the cutest and most imaginative costumes ever! Thanks for sharing its creation with us. I hope the air quality has improved for you; between the fires, floods and the plague, this has been a very challenging year. Your creative solution helps inspire my own for dealing with the situations.🤗

You forgot to add on the width of the elastic you are using for the waist, which looks to be a 2" wide elastic which would have made your original 27" up to 29".

the dowel "needles" - pencil sharpener? at least for the 4 small ones. for future reference, now, of course.
@LadyRebeccaFashions
@LadyRebeccaFashions 3 года назад
Honestly, I did think about it, but it would only really help with the very tip of the needle (and that's only if it would fit in my eye crayon sharpener, since it definitely is too wide for a standard pencil sharpener). The very tip is actually not that difficult to sand -- it's the 4" or so above the tip that was way more difficult!

@@LadyRebeccaFashions oh i see. it was hard to tell in the video, but i was thinking that it might would fit the sharpeners that are made for the kindergarten "fat" pencils. nonetheless, i think you did an awesome job with the whole project. and i enjoyed the skirt and thought it looked way better than i imagined it would when i first saw it at the beginning. for me, since i'm not a complete novice sewer, i think i would cut two side seams to make pockets, because pockets = life. right? lol
