My new book on the history of car suspension covers everything from 1930s GM independent front suspension to Porsche air suspension to BMC Hydrolastic. It's a fascinating look at the changes in car suspension over 120 years.
"It's a great book! It summarizes a lot of technical knowledge and history in a readable and understandable manner. It's not just for enthusiasts, professionals should become familiar with the info too." - Gene Lukianov, vehicle dynamics specialist, VRAD Engineering and former Vehicle Dynamics Manager, Chrysler.

Four words: Soarer Limited, Citroen, Delphi and Bose were the most significant in my lifetime. unfortunately, F1 banned Lotus’ active suspension, or we’d see more of it on road cars than we do now. Ultimately, it all comes down to cost. With the BEV revolution and low cg due to battery pack placement, we are ushering in a new era of suspension design. The pack is now becoming an integral part of the skateboard or is main part of the skateboard/frame ( Tesla) and body and frame stiffness can be adjusted accordingly. Mounting electric drive motors onto suspension will also change th8ngs. In addition, making complete rear or front ends from a massive single stamping ( Tesla Model Y) is also changing things dramatically. Good luck with the book Julian. Sounds like a great read.

Nailed it with the cover! I'm sure the rest of the book will be just as good.

Your book looks like my type of thing. I have an interest in vintage cars and obscure mechanical things.

I hope that you have covered the Citroen's history of making the most comfortable cars with its oleopneumatic suspension and also the world's first active suspensions (I rode in one old C5 with it and it was simply amazing how its spared by back).

I cover Citroen's hydropneumatic suspension in my book. (But it's not an active system in the normally accepted sense of the word.)

Lanchester was also fundamental in aerodynamics and his work with Prandtl, I'm annoyed I dont know more about him tbh. Looks like a really interesting read.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge mate. The videos you make are great and easy to follow 👍 do you do any private consulting on vehicle dynamics?

No I don't do any consulting on vehicle dynamics. Depending on what exactly is required, I can offer some suggestions of people though.

Do you cover Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Maserati, and Ferrari? I own an ‘85 Alfa Romeo Spider, which is basically a 50’s Alfa Romeo. I’d like to learn about when everyone started using independent front, and especially rear, suspension.

The book does not cover Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Maserati, and Ferrari. Independent front and rear suspensions are covered - IFS became dominant in the US in the late 1930s, and IRS in Europe about 30 years later.

As a Citroen DS driver is there much in the book to interest me, that isn't covered in other books, i.e. more technical?

It depends on what books you've already read! The section on Citroen hydropneumatic suspension covers aspects such as hydraulic circuit designs, typical natural frequencies, etc. It's 5 pages (plus an additional one on Mercedes 1960s/1970s self-levelling, which uses a very similar system).
