World's Most Overengineered Water Rocket!

In this video I set out to build the world's most overengineered water rocket! I used PVC pipe and a soda bottle connected to an air compressor. I machined a locking mechanism out of aluminum and plastic which is driven by a pneumatic actuator. The rocket is launched using radio transceivers capable of working up to 15km away! I had a blast making this project.
New videos are uploaded as soon as I finish them!

As an engineer I spend most of my time problem solving and I think that's an extremely important skill. I have learned that complex problems that may seem impossible at first, can be solved by breaking them down into “byte sized” pieces. I hope that my viewers see my passion and enthusiasm for making things, and that it inspires them to make something that they're excited about.
If you’re new here you may not know that I make a lot of other cool project videos like this. If you enjoy these kind of project videos, please consider subscribing to byte sized. I really appreciate you taking the time to watch this video.

Growing up in Europe, I made rockets that were similar with a bicycle pump. At the time, Germany had re-usable PET bottles with much thicker walls, which could hold a LOT more pressure than a US 2 liter bottle. The would fly as far as a traditional rocket. You could significantly optimize your design by making a smaller nozzle for the water to come out of, it will give you much more thrust over a longer duration an enable much better flights. Fins will help stabilize it, but a more weight efficient design is like a bottle rocket, with a stick for stabilization. For this to work properly, your stick needs to be 9 times the length of the body. The bottle will expand as you pressurize it, so I'd recommend taping it on with gaffer's tape (as opposed to glue) I love that the launcher is so overbuilt!

You might want to put some PTFE tape on the threaded insert (bottle top) to help make it air/water tight. Great video. Keep up the good work.

That's a great suggestion. It's a pretty tight seal already, but it can't hurt.

Hey, some consideration... "Soda bottle" have good efficiency because of their mass, so if you don't up so much the pressure use soda bottle... 3D printing is not sealed, you must coat it with resin... If you choose to design something different from soda bottle leave behind the uncomfortable screw connection of soda bottle and his high diameter

Awesome project. I notice the bottle was not completely seal at locking point. If you put heat on the section where it locks and squeeze the pvc together it will make it a bit wider to seal the gap 100% as so the water f don’t leak out.
@bytesizedengineering
@bytesizedengineering 3 года назад
The clips shown were some tests. I ended up putting clear packing tape around the PVC pipe and it sealed really well.

Nice launcher! Now you have built the launching pad, how about the water rocket? 😁 I'm building the world 1st water rocket equipped with a double electric pump. I would say that one is the most over-engineered water rocket. 😉 Please take a look at it, watching video and the ones related to my turbine conversion.

I did not think that clear tubing would hold up to even that much pressure. I've come across them before, wondering the hardware store, and at first glance thought they were thicker, similar to schedule 40 PVC pipe, but was surprised by how thin and flimsy they actually were. In retrospect, I guess they're probably about the same thickness as the 2 liter bottles, though. What exactly failed on the rocket? I assumed the plastic tube expanded too much or the 3d print failed?
@bytesizedengineering
@bytesizedengineering 3 года назад
The clips of the custom red rocket were some tests. I ended up putting clear packing tape around the PVC pipe and it sealed really well. Everything withstood the pressure so far. I'm only at 40psi so not too crazy.

Great project! Does the bottle screw into something on the launcher? If so, how does it unscrew for launch? And if not, how is the water and pressure being held? Thank you :)
@bytesizedengineering
@bytesizedengineering 3 года назад
No, the bottle fits pretty snug over the PVC pipe. I did add a layer of packing tape to make a good seal. The only thing holding the bottle down are those locking forks.

Nice project! I need to replace my binocular microscope with a trinocular, and I'm curious what model you've got. For soldering irons, are you familiar with Metcal? Once you use a Metcal, everything else feels like you're using an antique wood burner :)

Thanks J.C. The microscope I have is an AmScope SM-6TX with a Cannon DSLR adapter. I really like the articulating arm mount because it's much easier to adjust than other types. If you are interested I have some affiliate links below. amzn.to/2TU9yPs amzn.to/3l5eM6Q Regarding soldering irons, yes I've used Metcal irons at various places I've worked. They are wonderful! I'm on a tighter budget here at home so I'm stuck with my antique wood burner :-)

You do realize they’ve been doing this better with a handful of zip ties for the last decade or more. This is all at the engineering level of about 2 while the current top end of water rockets is around 11. 1000 psi multistage rockets that fly over 2000 ft
@bytesizedengineering
@bytesizedengineering 2 года назад
You're totally missing the point of this video. Of course there are easy ways to do this. I didn't want to do it the easy way. That's why I over engineered the crap out of it.
