Like many, my intro to the sport was through watching Eddie Hall, who is 6'2" and 440 lbs. competing with Brian Shaw, 6' 8" and 460 pounds. Then, out of nowhere, comes a Canadian guy is is 6'4" and 330 - more than 100 pounds less than the two strongest men. This gives you an obvious athletic advantage - you are quicker in running, throwing, etc. But how do you explain the fact that, at over 100 pounds lighter, you are just as strong as the much heavier guys?
@TyrannosaurusCHEX
@TyrannosaurusCHEX 2 дня назад
Much better cardio is a thing - 400+ pound men might have a higher maximum single rep but they get tired and lose strength fast on endurance events. Also Mitchell absolutely threw himself at the events to win his first title in a way most professionals would never dare to do as the risk of injury would cripple their career - high risk, high reward.

Eddie hall only won once 7 years ago and he regularly calls himself world strongest man. He's the only one I can really think of who does it though. Don't remember hearing Tom Stolyman saying it during the year he wasn't, or hearing Brian Shaw saying it either. Arguable Mitchell has some right to do so though he has won several big competitions in the last two years and came close second and wsm despite being injured. He probably didn't mean to say it the way he did though because I don't remember hearing him call himself that in any other videos recently and also this video could have been recorded before wsm 2024

Why even bother with the Q&A on the PED usage?! No doubt every single WSM competitor who arrives on comp day is on stuff. May not be insane dosages or the madness we hear bodybuilders taking, but we know it's there because nobody gets as physically massive without such... Take Shaw and Thor for example, lets look at their prior to lifting basketball days, do you think they would have gone on to put on the mass they did without hormonal enhancement?! Definitely not... But with the help of PED's they were able to maximize tissue on their bigger/taller frames.
@leonkennedy9739
@leonkennedy9739 Месяц назад
I think this is unfortunately one of those open secrets. Peak natty and peak steroid strength are surprising not that far off but steroids get people there in a fraction of the time and even a marginal strength increase is too tempting for people performing at the top level. Not only is there steroids, but there are compounds for increasing blood oxygenation, peptides, and do not forget stimulants.
@ninjadudeofficial
@ninjadudeofficial Месяц назад
Loz actually said on a stream during WSM that his first time competing in it he was actually natural, which kinda suggests that at least some actually aren't on anything. But yes, it's safe to assume that like in anything else, most or all of the top ones and those going through fast extreme transformations are at least on something, if still less than many other sports. And why bother answering it? Because he's probably a little tired of it being basically the biggest question (which seems excessive tbf) and wants to try to explain why many don't want to or can't talk more openly about it. Certainly not the specifics
@sagebauer1077
@sagebauer1077 Месяц назад
He's not saying you don't need PEDs. He's saying its less than people expect. People see Shaw and Thor and go "holy shit, they're 440lbs... for me to be 440lbs, I probably need to blast 10g of test". The truth is that even without PEDs Shaw and Thor are absolutely fucking massive once-in-a-generation freaks, and it takes way less peds for them to get to their size than it does for someone with subpar genetics to get to a decent state level. You can't out-PED your genetics, basically. Blasting insane levels to try to catch up is a death sentence

Hey Mitchel, you are a great insperation and its awesome to see a Canadian so prominent in strong man. Do you think powerlifting will get a popularity boost like strongman? I learned i have a lot of strength but i doubt i would do well in strongman due to my height, but i could do well as a power lifter but i don't see much commercial appeal in it like strongman.
@iaminside1
@iaminside1 4 дня назад
Feeling strong is subjective. I am stronger than anyone I know personally. There is a guy who can bench more than me, but I am stronger at every other lift. Seeing strong people on social media makes you feel weak. "Whoa, this guy is squatting 700lbs? I am still at 450lbs. I am weak." In reality I am stronger than most people in the world. There area only a small percentage of people above my ability.
@TyrannosaurusCHEX
@TyrannosaurusCHEX 3 дня назад
My view is that if you can lift any household appliance with ease then you are as strong as you will ever need to be - anything beyond about a 100kg lifting power should really only be required of professional athletes.

Thanks for great video. I have to say, I found explanation and answer regarding PED’s futile. The comparison to binge drinking doesn’t work. As Mirch later acknowledged, in most countries it is illegal (unlike drinking) and in the context of competitive sport it is also cheating. Additionally, with the platform and success top athletes have they are looked upto and it is important to set realistic example to others. I do understand Mitch’s point about stigma, and that may be PED users are more harshly judged, however drinking is often a solution to hardship in peoples life, whereas PED’s is for vanity or to gain an unfair advantage in pursuit of goal. This all said, much respect to Mitch for taking on the question and, say for example he has used PED’s he should still be immensely proud of his achievements.
@ninjadudeofficial
@ninjadudeofficial Месяц назад
I think his point to some extent was that though they may be illegal they're not always (inherently) more dangerous than some pretty unhealthy stuff that's normalised. Including drinking and smoking. Also, safe to see it as not being cheating unless it's a tested competition, which to my knowledge a lot or most strongman ones aren't
@algorerhythm2751
@algorerhythm2751 Месяц назад
MPMD said it best: The top-level strongmen aren't taking all that much. Brian Shaw, Big Z, Mitch himself... they can perform at a high level for a very long time, which isn't doable if they're blasting PEDs all year round. That said, I would wager that virtually every world class competitor in the sport is taking what they need to. There is no testing in strongman so drugs are more or less the norm, as with any untested strength sport (powerlifting, armwrestling, etc.)
@YaYippieYeah

"in the context of competitive sport it is also cheating." No, that is an unfair generalization. You basicly say he's cheating, but Mitch does not cheat.

Here's an observation. If you feel that strength sports are best grown at a grass roots level why are you not promoting strongman at an entry to amature nationals in your home country? Being WSM and being the first Canadian to win would be a huge influence to amature strongmen and strongwomen.

Strongman are a different breed though, there seems to be a bit of a secret handshake among the community that everyone uses them to some degree and they are ok with that because everyone is on equal footing - in other sports (generally ones with lots of corporate sponsors) the competitors will swear blind that neither they nor any of their friends or teammates every touch the stuff, their achievements are purely natural and anyone who worked hard enough could be where they are... Lots of folks curious about PEDs, but they’re not as big a factor as one might think. They’re great for recovery and muscle size, but for strength the difference is negligible. The big X factor for freakish strength is genetics. You either have it or you don’t. The average person can train hard their entire life and certainly get a lot stronger, but their ceiling just isn’t as high as someone genetically predisposed to being super strong.
@deadcakesandpanlifts2019
@deadcakesandpanlifts2019 26 дней назад
Completely false, we have very strong scientific evidence that recovery and muscle size arent the only aspects that roids influence, but also strength. That being said someone with bad strength genetics on PEDs can definetely be weaker than a natural with good strength genetics. Roids are a huge factor, we literally know.
