Worm bins are so simple to keep alive, they don't stink, they don't
smell, they are easy to feed, and the castings known as vermicompost
are so good for your garden. I go through a few myths of worm bins, and
my experience after 1 year.

Hey Luke. Iv had worm bins for years. It has mot always been successful. Took me a while to learn to listen to my worms and let them tell me what was needed. After watching your vidio here. It's almost exactly what I do. Blend the food. Don't dig around feed once a week. The only thing I do different is when I feed I put a had full of shredded brown cardboard in the pocket I dig. Then I put the food on top of this, then I cover back over. Next week I feed on the opposite side. By the time I come back to the first side all the cardboard is gone. Thanks Warren.

Save and dry out your orange, lemon, lime, and grapefruit skin. Once dry, put them in a blender and make your own zest. It is a wonderful spice and shelf life is fantastic.

Thanks Luke. It's good to see that you "care" about these living creatures and not just for "fertilising" your garden.I have learned this too with mine.I also feed them decayed leaves after a heavy shower. They love it as apposed to "manmade cardboard".

I notice no one is talking about keeping the temps decently cool as they don’t like heat. I use togo nightcrawler at night as a kid hunting and I noticed that they were pulling blades of grass into their holes... plus meeting on the surface to mate. Just a bit of FYI

A simple solution for the citrus peals is to get rid of the oil, by boiling them to make a nice repellant for your plants, ones you use them like that you, can put the peals in the compost bin and the worms will be able to eat them

I believe that my worms have a favorite food and its watermelon rinds. I froze some rinds and I am feeding them frozen rinds in the winter. I let them thaw out in the greenhouse (where my worm bin resides) and put it in the bin when it starts to thaw. The rind gets mushy but they dont care! :-) Chuck

You are lucky, where I live the stores won't give us anything that is going bad or any leaves or food or anything. They rather throw it in the garbage and write it off then to give it to someone that can use it to make Vermicomposting. Such a waste and bad for the land fills.

Judging from the contents of your bin.... mine is too wet. :) and I had to comment because you mentioned broccoli scraps. Something I learned just yesterday. Don't add too much broccoli if your bin is indoors! Overnight, it stunk. It was not the bin it was the broccoli! I had some frozen broccoli stems that I thawed and then fed the worms. Yep, my whole mudroom smelled of broccoli. Eww Luckily it was not blended so I took them out. Chickens loved that stinky broccoli.

I put cut up a lemon in my worm bin, they can finish it by 3 days, peel and purp. The thing I don't understand why we can't put waste meat? I put bad chicken meat in 2 of my compost bucket. Svetla Nikolova You don't want to just go giving them pure orange, of course. You also wouldn't want to give them pure tomato. But like he says in the video, it's about mixing the food. I’ve kept mine outside year round. Going on 4 years. Year 1 I was sure my worms would have died and I bought more. Well, I was very surprised that there was a strong worm population in my bin. After being out in the rain, snow and sleet. I haven’t added any more worms since and it is still going strong. I feed them all kitchen scraps (no meats, dairy nor processed foods), tea leaves, leaves and dead flowers. The only time the food accumulates, gets eaten less and deco, poses slower is in winter (probably because it is frozen). But, by early spring, it is gone. I keep adding throughout the year. I don’t dig much. There are other critters though, slugs for example. I just let it be. Seems healthy. My trash output is minimal.

Worms tend to climb around when everything is very dark and leave castings behind. I clean my bin walls, fluff up the bedding and feed once a week. Fluffing helps introduce more oxygen and keeps the bedding not so wet. Also redistributes worms around the bedding so they can keep working it

Sassi I have a disabled raccoon, looks like he got rolled by a car, one of his front legs is fused solid and doesn't bend he has only about 3 inches left to his tail and an eye missing. We keep our garbage in those old fashioned metal cans the kind that get dented and then you have a heck of a time pulling the lid off... yeah disabled as he is, he uses the covers as flippin' Frisbees. Raccoons are SMART and they LEARN fast! Seriously if you have a raccoon the ONLY thing that works is to make sure whatever you have that you don't want him getting into is in the house,... and even at that there are multitudes of videos of raccoons having broken into people's houses! From the bottom of my heart though I wish you good luck! If they go after a worm castings bin like these I have no doubts they are seeking the veggie food you feed the worms with and I bet if you looked back on it MIgardener would find it was within 3 days of feeding them and the raccoon smelled the food and came for it... that being said I just bagged and threw out some papers from my office and zero food and the raccoon made sure my entire yard was littered with papers... face palm!

@@MariaLuciaGomezGreenberg Hi Maria, I'd love to learn more about your experiences with worms in the heat! I live in an apartment in Vegas and I'm going to start a small worm bin. I was considering the water bottle situation. I've also heard that keeping a wet/cold towel on top can help as well. I can tell this year is gonna be hot!!

No citrus spices fats meat fish bones I made mistakes. Whether or not worms eat fruit it attracts hundreds of fruit flies and goes sludgy then smells Keep aerobic not anaerobic like compost

oh yeah, its plenty warm. They eat food so fast it doesn't have time to attract a single fly.

+jbdoney Uncle JIm's is where I purchased mine, they've been a successful purchase. I heard lots of good things about them before I did so. ...or may find a friend that has some that you can get a handful from :)

Your best bet is Red Wigglers ! They stay in the bin and love eating! you need only about 500, they will multiply fast! You will have at least 5 times more in 3 months then what you started out with!
