I have had so many osteo doctors AND physical therapists over the years make me bend over like that at my first or last appt - I ALWAYS had a relapse and was done w the appts. I've learned to say NO! Thank you for showing me why that happened.
@L.Spencer
@L.Spencer 6 лет назад
That happened to me, at an intake she tried to make me bend over. My back was just telling me not to. She kept insisting, but I would put my hand down to support myself. She said I needed to take my hand away. I ended up in tears, this whole back issue has changed my life and been a huge stress, then that. She kept saying I should be able to do it since it had been over 8 weeks (took me that long to be able to get an appointment and keep it.) I changed therapist. Now I see I was right to not do that stretch, it could have gone out again, and then I'd probably have not been able to move at all. Let alone go home.
@playhooky
@playhooky 6 лет назад
Jenni & Loraine - I feel for you both - it can be so hard to stand up for what you know is right for you because you know your body. It actually helps to practice the conversation ahead of time if you are going back to the same dr or therapist (it's technically called "imagined interactions - who knew that it is good to talk to yourself - lol). And if the person won't listen to you, then yep - you need to switch practitioners. Stand you ground when your body tells you something is wrong or hurts bad!!!
@L.Spencer
@L.Spencer 6 лет назад
I do stand up for myself more than I used to. I had a chiro at the beginning of this, when I couldn't stop crying, who didn't want my husband to come in with me to the appointment. I really insisted, as I needed him emotionally. She finally relented. Also, now I see a PT who is not at all pushy and very easy going.

Forward bends are perfectly fine if you do them correctly as taught in Yoga, which means most of the flexion comes from the pelvic tilt and not from the lumbar spine. Yoga teaches us to maintain a “flat back” (I.e. neutral L-spine) as we bend forward and always to take the forward bend only as far as you can without flexing the spine.
@Coopogers
@Coopogers 5 лет назад
Some, who lack core strength, may be more at risk during these exercises even if they're told to have a flat back. They're physically incapable so should work their way into it after building up their core 🤗

Thank you for your videos! Can you do a video on what to do about numbness, tingling, and aching in the lower back, hips AND arms and hands? I see a lot of videos for either the lower or upper extremities, but none for both. Is there any sleeping position that won't aggravate one while 'fixing' the other? What would cause both at the same time? I've been really struggling with this. If I sleep in a way that's comfortable for my back/lower spine issues, my arms and especially my hands ache and then go numb. If I sleep in a position that feels good to my arms and hands, my lower back aches and I have episodes of back pain. I also can't sleep on my front because, again, low back pain from that position. How do I sleep? I toss and turn and toss and turn and wake myself up repeatedly as I change position! :D please help!

Is standing forward fold in yoga too much pressure on your low back as well? We do it in class and usually fold from the hips with a slight bend in the knees so your belly touches your thighs, then you would grab opposite elbows and hang.. it feels like a relief to the back rather than a strain doing it this way. Thoughts?
@hargow4u
@hargow4u 4 года назад
As long as there is no compression in your lumbar spine, you should be okay. Keep the spine lengthening and lead with the heart as you fold from the hips. Bend the knees more if you are less flexible. Good yoga teachers will cue you to avoid rounding of the lower back. Learning proper alignment and working with your body's limitations is key when doing yoga postures. Only then will your body open up to allow you to go further. Namaste.

HUGE THANK YOU !!! I need to show this video to my friends. Been doing that back stretch (touch your toes and windmills) for 2 decades now. We all do it, no matter the place, fitness, before running, at the gym... Even all the instructors I met, kickboxing, jiujitsu. you name it, they all do it... I think no one cares or they are not that well informed. No wonder this and other factors too, started to have such a big impact on my back. First time it happened I heard a snap and for 2 weeks I was in bed. When I did some investigations, the X-rays revealed that I had a l4 l5 inflammation. I took inflammatory and anti-pain medication. But no physical recuperation exercises. I searched the entire youtube for some exercises. Now that I found you, I need to do some at home, otherwise I can't resume training or do other sports and activities.

I feel like if I watch Bob and Brad once a day and try their suggestions, I'll never have pain again! Getting older is not a choice, but doing it more gracefully is possible!

Is it weird that when my lower back aches from sitting/standing too long, a forward bend stretch feels so good.

I don't stretch over and down, I lay forward on a table with feet on floor. I think this takes the stress/pressure off lower back and gives a little stretch, but not too much stretch. Not sure if this is ok or not, but it does feel better.

I think it's just in your head. It's better to do what's right rather than what feels good and might be damaging I guess

Try to be mindful of your posture when sitting or standing, your lower back is doing much more work than it is equipped for, that's why you end up in pain. When I'm aware of my posture, I try to be as tall as I can, pressing down with the feet (70% of weight in the heels) and lifting from the waist up. Forward folds are primarily to release the hamstrings, the belly should be lifted to support the spine. Look up "standing cat cow" for loving movement for spine and hips. Pain is inevitable, suffering is avoidable.

No, it's not weird. This is common with people who may have some facet stress from standing or walking for too long. Sometimes with sitting too long if you've been sitting a particular way. If it feels good, it's probably fine!

Exactly. That move he did around 6:04 would put my already hyper lordotic curve in a bad place. Everything doesn’t work for everybody.

That "chhhhhhhhh" sound is thousands of yoga class cards being torn up at once. Seriously, no standing forward bend, ever?

At my yoga teacher training, my instructors emphasized keeping the chest open and spine lengthened for all forward bends, ESP if you're going into a twist. No compression in the lumbar spine. To do forward bend, keep the back flat, bend the knees, and lead with the heart, only going as far as the lower spine stays lengthened. If rounding occurs, back off, bend the knees more. It's astounding how many yoga teachers were not taught properly and in turn teach poor alignment to their students that cause injuries.

I always bend my knees to stretch my lower back in forward fold whether I'm standing or sitting. That's how you get the stretch in your lower back instead of your hamstrings.

Well, they both clearly demonstrate they don't have the prerequisite flexibility for forward bends. This channel seems to be aimed at people who are very out of shape.

Hey just wanted to tell you that I use this stretch a lot and it feels great. I dont think its bad if you are slow and methodical about it. I mean think about basic Yoga routines this movement is in all of them.
