You were not doing the stretch correctly then. You must bend from the hips and keep your back straight when bending to touch your toes. They fail in epic fashion in the video to give themselves any kind of credit. The fact is when performed correctly touching your toes actually allows your back to fully decompress which can only otherwise be achieved by inversion. Bone doctors, Chiropractors, are not qualified to be speaking on muscles and ligaments, else they would be another kind of doctor altogether such as a Kinesiologist. They have minimal training in this area and is limited to its role directly connected to the bones.

@benjaminzaoui9683
@benjaminzaoui9683 2 года назад
@@seanregehr4921 They are physical therapists, which essentially serve the same function as kinesiologists to assist patients in normal, pain free movement. Kinesiologists will generally spend more time with patients actually supervising the exercises they have patients perform, but there is a lot of overlap between the two fields. As physical therapists they are well versed in the soft tissues and not limited to bones as you suggest. Kinesiologists are not doctors either. They also stated that certainly the stretch can be performed properly, but that it isn't worth the risk as most are not mobile or knowledgeable enough to do so. Bottom line you failed to note they acknowledged the stretch could be performed safely if done properly, and you are misinformed on the topics you spoke on with with great authority. What the hell is a bone doctor, you mean an orthopedist or orthopedic surgeon? They diagnose and treat bone disease and injuries, and they are also experts in ligaments and tendons, as well as the muscles these tendons connect to our bones. So "bone doctors" are actually experts in muscles, tendons, ligaments, or in other words the musculoskeletal system as a whole, as their specialty is to restore normal movement to an injured patient. Pretty incredible to think that you'd have to be an expert in muscles (the things that apply forces to bones) in order to understand human movement, and diagnose and treat disorders thereof. As for chiropractors they aren't doctors of anything, except Chiropractic "Medicine" which, is absolutely quackery, and not worth mention. Stick to yoga.

I'm started to notice too that I spent so many years focusing on flexibility and stretching alone through yoga at home (or group lessons, but teachers often don't have the time to correct their students individually and now with covid they're not allowed to correct anymore). But with all the backpain, neckpain and pain in my wrists I need to stop yoga and start focusing on strength. Never realised how bad some of the stretches were if they're not combined with strength.

I like both mugs! Thank you for addressing what yoga folks do! I love that you anticipate these aspects. I will not do those stretches anymore. My back hurts a lot. I did the forward fold and it is instant relief but not long term as I see here!

I ❤️ your channel Bob & Brad! I’ve used so many of your tips & they have ALWAYS been AWESOME! A few of my faves were the spinal decompression stretches...I do those every other day. They make my back feel great! I wanted to add that u 2 are so hilarious w/ur self-deprecating comments, BUT DON’T BE TOO TOUGH ON YOURSELVES! You’re both in fantastic shape! Better than a lot of guys half your age! That’s something to be proud of guys😊😄😁

I've had lower back problems (and surgery) since I was 19 and aside shown exercises, child pose (a yoga pose but with hands behind you instead of in front) really gives great relief to my lower back. Try it. I also found out myself that in the gym you can do this upright (still go through your knees) while hanging on to a bar in front of you for even greater stretch of the lower back. Thanks docs!

I'm a wushu (kungfu) practitioner for over 40 years. Those 2 stretches are fundamental to any flexibility routine in the sport, plus more. Never, ever had, or seen, a problem with it. Love these guys, but I'm scratching my head on this one. Maybe for usually sedentary people, they shouldn't

I agree. I've been doing these stretches for more than 10 years, I'm 53, and feel fine. I started doing Jefferson Curls 10 months ago and have worked up to 27.5kg dumbbells. I'm fairly certain I have a stronger lower back and stronger hamstrings in their most extended position. Which has to be good right? Strength and length.

I have been doing Kung Fu since the 1980s. Never had an an issue with that stretch UNTIL I had an unrelated injury causing tears to L4 and L5. What happens is the basic stretches we all know and love, Do stretch the muscles, HOWEVER, they compress the disks. This forces the damaged disks out of shape due to the compression. Nerves get pinched. Its not a problem if the disks are healthy and strong. I wish they had showed the spinal model, and how this action occurs during the motions. The video just doesnt make sense without understanding that.

I have a lot of back problems.(specifically my lower back) they’re totally right on this. If I bend straight over to touch my toes it compresses nerves and is incredibly painful. Staying away from these stretches is just safer

OMG !! This is CRAZY !! This "worse back stretch" is exactly what I did 2 days ago, and even though I did it gradually, I'm still paying the price for it now. So now I've been soaking in hot baths with Epsom Salts, applying DMSO, taking Ibuprofen & lots of antioxidants, and gently doing the acceptable stretching shown here, and hoping and praying for the best.

Great professional advice!!!Yes, I was going to yoga weekly and doing forward folds. Back pain was getting worse and then I woke up with a herniated disc at L5-S1 compressing the sciatic nerve. Had a microdiscectomy that wasn’t so micro. I’ve learned my lesson

Might be interesting to know I did yoga class for some years, and those two 'wrong' exercises were not in the routine. And surprisingly (?) the recommended were (called de-gassers ;-)). And I couldn't agree more (with the recommendation). The wrong ones were taught in primary and secondary school. Finally, in yoga class you start with a long relaxation period and that makes a huge difference once you start stretching. That's different from stretching from a cold start. It doesn't require a lot of imagination to see the wrong ones in a cold start can't be good at all.

Lately I’ve been doing a lot of flexibility and mobility exercises and I’m definitely doing both of these exercises and they feel great. I make sure to do spine flexion as well, but I feel a lot better now that I also do spine extension and not only flexion. It feels a lot more whole and natural. My back hasn’t felt this good in a while in all honesty.
