My yellow lab was obsessed with balls. Anything round and ball looking, like a cantaloupe and it was game on! But her sweet and goofy playfulness always brought laughter. She had an exuberance for life that was unmatched. I miss her dearly! RIP Sadie Belle 1999-2014.💕
At what age? If your Lab is at least 18 months or more, it should have outgrown that naughty phase. If it is older than 18 months, lots of physical activity curbs much of that anxiety. My Lab goes for a run at the park each and every day....rain or shine. If I happen to miss an occasional day, she is a completely different dog. A tired Lab is a happy Lab.
Ive had both American and English Labs, Americans were the troublesome ones and my English labs have been more chilled out. I wonder if thats just my personal experience or if anyone else ever noticed a difference *Troublesome fun.. they were wonderful dogs!!!
Our first Lab did the rolling in and eating poop thing once or twice. He especially loved horse apples, which can be dangerous for a dog if the horse is on medications. Our current Lab seems to actually grossed out by poop. His ball once landed on a turd while playing, and he refused to pich it up. Just stood there with one paw raised. I had to get it, and rinse it off. 😂
Haha, you hit the nail on the head, my mum has had about 20 retrievers, Chesapeake's, Labrador's, she loves them, i bought her one as a get well gift and I've been exercising him, i have lost half a stone in walking him miles and miles and he still has to have his play, they're wonderful animals, but god they're demanding at times 😂
Well mine must be the complete exception to the rule…..mine doesn’t eat or roll in crap…..and is of working line, and he is is one of the most chilled out dogs I know 🤷♂️
I have a red fox labrador. I need eyes everywhere. She is into everything and will work out ways to get wot she wants. She is 16 weeks old, and completely digging the garden up. But she is my gorgeous girl. Dreading putting the Xmas tree up though 😫
Red lab is a health hazard to itself AKC does not allow this color of lab because it was bred strictly for color your dog will most likely suffer from hip displacement and meny other diseases thanks to that breeder you supported silvers ,red, charcoal is all human error
@@laneysmith1008 breeders who breed for show make good dogs, breeders who breed for hunt lines breed good dogs, breeders who breed for color create dogs with bad health issues. Not saying your dog will never be good train train train and you’ll get results
Think it depends on the strain. Current one is a mad hatter. Hyper hyper active. The first was as expected and the second was calmer than a Rastafarian on a Sunday. Pick carefully.
My yellow lab is 19 months old. So far the only thing he rolls in is mud and water. He grabbed a mouthful of horse turds but spit it out. Hope it keeps up like this.
As a non-labrador owner, I'd also like to add that they don't seem to understand dog social cues. I have a greyhound that is pretty patient and polite, but not particularly interested in other dogs. Most dogs can read the room and leave him alone after a quick hello, but labradors always seem to barrel over, completely oblivious to his multiple "leave me alone, please" signals and get way too up in his space. Lovely dogs, but they are basically just oblivious children that don't realise not everyone wants to play all the time.
As someone who has a 9 year old chocolate lab, I can confirm they are very energetic, cause our lab Oakley still jumps around like a puppy all the time
Mine of four years is old and fat we adopted him he just sits around on the couch and lays on the floor he loves to roll around on the floor he loves rolling on the floor and loves new people but gets bored easily
This is so true. My charcoal lab has also rolled in a dead rat before. It was disgusting. Now every time he rolls we look under him to see what he did. He’s been a good boy lately so we haven’t had to wash poop off him yet though.
With my old lab who passed away 2 months ago (RIP) almost every week me and her would race I would be on my dirtbike and she would run she ran around the house so much it tired me, she knew the track and everything. Sadly she was taken at only 3 years old and 2 months
Not rolling in it but my staffy has a new habit of trying to bury his shit. He can’t, he just starts kicking everything up, including his shit, all while smiling, he’s so proud of his new “hygienic” habit. 😅😅 He likes to pee on teen girls shoes, while they’re wearing them, vet just laughed when we told him. Still don’t know what’s wrong, he’s 11, probably just confused them with whatever teen girls resemble, not figured out what that is yet though. He doesn’t go for children, teen boys or adults. 🤭
Agree with the energy. I'm on my 5th black lab now. None of them eat shit other than a bit of bunny poop. And never roll in it. I've heard it has a lot to do with neutering, but don't know for sure. That was just in an article I found when a friend had trouble with her lab.
I owned working line labs for years. They are awesome but dear God do they have energy for days. And they are chewing machines. I've owned bullies and mastiff breeds and they have nothing on labs with chewing But they are absolutely smart and loving dogs.
My labrador's mom was small and calm and his dad was huge and crazy.... now I have 8 year old medium small INSANELLY crazy and strong 80 pounds lab that deared to jump on 140 pound wild pig and kill it! He also eats everything! From bricks, rat poision, birds, live crabs...
I can’t tell you the disgusting thing Mavis has been into! Disgusting. Sometimes the Velcro action can be a bit too much. Hair: there are times in the year the quantity of hair on the floor board is thick enough to form a rug in spots. However given this, I would never not have my girl. She will hike all day long! She is the best companion and I swear she knows how I am feeling.
I live with my parents, in the morning I have to leave a lot earlier than my mom so she takes care of the animals including our 11 year old lab. So when I come down stairs at 6 am and I am making my breakfast, getting my frozen berries, my yoghurt, my oats, making my tea I am constantly being followed by the dog, it is slightly annoying
This video focuses on problems but no solutions. I currently have and had Labs for a number of years. MOST of these issues can be easily be remedied. Yes, they are high energy. That energy must be burned off. EXERCISE: My Lab goes to the park each and every day and I run her for at least an hour or more. Her nails have never been clipped (except for dew claws) because she wears them down naturally from being so physically active. When we get back home, I have a very tired and happy dog....she eats her dinner and goes to bed for the night. The two Vets who see her have told us she is a prime example of an athlete with amazing muscle tone and her age/weight/size ratios are right on mark. TRAINING: A well trained dog (any breed) is almost always happier and healthier, beside being well behaved. ROUTINE: We humans have routines, and so should dogs. They can quickly learn what to expect and when to expect it. At the same time every day, my Lab comes into my office with her leash and says, "Let's Go!" Not all of us have a schedule or enough time to provide these basics. If you cannot provide one or more of these requirements, a Lab might not be a good pet for you.
It gets even worse when they're mixed with another breed, such as a German shorthaired pointer. My sister's dog is a chocolate lab GSP mix and she is a total nut! She's very lovable though.
One of my dogs is a jack russel mix, another is a black lab mix and their FAVORITE thing to do when they go down to play in the pasture is to find dead mice and roll in them, it doesn't happen often but when it does happen we always gotta wash them lol.
Theres English and American labs both having working and non working lines. I got a English non working lab. Straight potato, doesn't do anything wrong and is full of love 😂. My aussies on the other hand, love to eat shit and wipe it on each other and never stop moving. My gsds were basically glued to me or they would freak out
Growing up I had a black lab named Thor, my parents were at an auction for my moms work for charity and when he bumbled out with a blue bow tie my mom budded thinkin she will shill for charity, she was the only one that bid and they ended up taking Thor home, best 15 years ever. Oh and the worst thing about a lab is their radioactive farts. It will clear a village out. Lmao
Mine didn’t roll in shit and only sometimes are it. For me it was the shedding because as first time owners we were looking for not as much shedding and we got a lab that shed(?) even more than normal labs lol
To be fair a lot of dogs like to eat manure because of a lack or insufficient amount of minerals in their diet, but our vet said that it's only issue if they eat cat "stuff" because it can bring disease. Edit: Fyi, we have a bernese mountain dog.
Bruh, this guy really is a lifesaver, I was about to buy a dog, but his shorts made me realise that dogs are pretty annoying and too hard to look after . Major W thanks bro
It's not that dogs are annoying and hard to work with. It's that you're not able to take care of a dog. So, with that, thank you for not getting a dog.
So what's up with this "working line" you've mentioned? 🤔 I'm thinking about getting a golden retriever labrador mix as my first dog and got a little scared when I heard that they are that energetic. I lived together with a German shepherd border collie mix for two years but I always felt that I couldn't satisfy his need for exercising. Is a golden retriever labrador mix on the same level or is there a way to train them otherwise (mind exercise etc.)?🤔
Bred for hunting/police work. Working line = energetic, ready to go work, and waiting on you. They are energetic and require a lot of mental stimulation, but are they easy to train. It's like they came out of the box trained. I have a working line (hunting) labrador, and he's the most intelligent dog I've ever owned. He's always ready to go always by your side for every task. Great dog. The big plus is that he likes to keep clean & I love it! Don't be afraid to get stern with them and correct them. They are animals, after all. They will always try to push their boundaries around you to see how much they can get away with. Set your boundaries and hold them to it. You'll have the perfect dog. 😊
I own two labradors, neither of mine roll in theyre backside waste 😭, only one of them ate it but he was a little puppy, he is now 2 and my other is 5. i have a 6 year old golden retriever also
My 7 month old working line lab is aging me... I thought there was only one breeding of labs but now I have a American lab. And she is a wild child. Lol. She eats everything, and I mean everything. Yep yep in and outside. She is with me 24/7 as I am disabled. Sooooo next thing I am going to try is the crate training. Just keep on going with her ..
Labradors are great dogs but sadly I mostly only see overweight Labs where I live. My neighbour has two and both have had hip surgery. They tend to be up there with German Shepherds for bad hips.
The worst thing for me is the smell and the hair. We’ve had a constant struggle with skin allergies, yeast, ear infections and extra shedding and smell because of all that.
Look at what you are feeding your dog. If it is a kibble then that is likely the reason. Most kibble is a hideous concoction of cereal and 'derivatives'. Once the diet is sorted then the need to pay ludicrous amounts of money on vets, allergy and infection medications go. So invest in good dog food.
True. I have two black labs that came from the same litter, one stays pristine and never gets dirty, the other one crawls into anything with shit or mud mixed into it😂
Oh my God all I can say is my chocolate lab is my very first one of the labrador retriever breed all I can say is she's a pest I call her bug because she's always bugging in almost every
My labrador does not like stuff coming out the back end of other animals. LOL. He even steps very far around the area of his own poo. I seriously think my labrador is OCD. He expects only clean things. If his ball has dirt or grass. He will go drop it in his water bowl and roll it around until clean. If his toy lands in an area where there is pee or poo. He ain't touching it. If his bumper has sand or dirt, he's trying his best not to put that part in his mouth.
My sister has a lab mix. Big dog like 80lbs or more. She has a husband with a tbi and a 6yr old girl. This dog is just out of control, he runs u over and jumps all over u. He injures ppl. He hurts my niece but only bcuz he is so big and careless. She can not get his behaviour curved. Help!!!
We had a golden lab called Josie. And she would roll in rotten after birth from animals on our farm. It was the most disgusting smell I have ever smelt.
It’s not just eating that, labs eat everything they can, even if it doesn’t quite fit in their mouth, they’ll still try. I once heard someone describe a Labrador as “a stomach with legs” and it’s definitely very accurate! I’ve had several labs and lab mixes over the years and every single lab I’ve ever seen has tried to eat everything. They love to eat, love to chew, love to grab things with their mouths, and it’s the thing I’ve heard new lab owners complain about the most. They truly are wonderful dogs to own, especially for beginners, but it’s definitely something a lot of people aren’t quite aware of. Still, I’m glad you mentioned it!
My Labrador pulled the bin over and ate poo filled nappies once. Love him but his obsession with eating anything (toilet roll is his favourite) is getting ridiculous.
They are stupidly greedy and will find a way to steal food from kitchen counters, fridges & so on, even though you have done your best to put that item out of the way, we still managed to find a way to have it for themselves. Also the fact that I cannot put anything down anywhere in my lap or just have it even though she knows, it’s something she’s not supposed to have do it, she has cost me an absolute fortune where she has destroyed my expensive prescription glasses that I had up on my mantelpiece for thought she couldn’t get it and then the next thing you know when I looked at the camera. She climbed up on the sofa and then got it from climbing up onto the battle. Please what are pause and then proceeded to eat the glasses, which may be funny to some person reading this, but it’s not for me because I can’t afford to replace said glasses. I now have to use Poundland reading glasses that aren’t anywhere near suitable for my eyes, but I’ve got no choice.
So true! I recently learned that my black lab will literally jump up onto the counter to get food I’ve deliberately moved away from the edge lol. He also is an avid sock collector and will take our socks and hide them in various places 😐🤣
It's a lack of training, consistency, and structure on your part. As puppies, the behavior is expected b/c they are animals. But it is up to you to train your dog to be able to live with you. Some dogs take longer than others to train. But ultimately, it's you.
