We ended up spending a few days in Santa Marta at the end of our trip and we were really impressed with the beach...lots of locals, a low key vibe.

The lovely wall murals there, along with the colors are reminiscent of Oaxaxa Mexico in the video you did there. The waters looked fantastic for your snorkeling day. Great to see. TY.

We were thinking the same thing! The Getsemani neighbourhood definitely had some similarities to Oaxaca.

I love your videos and wanted to ask how do you prepare your dogs for flight? Especially regarding water, food going to bathroom etc. on long flights? My wife and I want to start traveling next year and will be taking our two small poodles. Figured you two would be the best to ask. Thank you

So wonderful that you're considering traveling with your dogs. We have some content already available on this topic...here is the last video bit.ly/3qdX6ta and this is a tip sheet bit.ly/3oF4OMc. Regarding going to the bathroom and long flights, we encourage our dogs to do their business before we enter the terminal but we also give them walking around opportunities while waiting to board. We carry a lot of paper towel so that we can do a fast clean up. We give them the same opportunity as soon as get off the plane. We give them minimal water during the flight and usually they aren't that interested to drink anyway. Hope that helps!

I just started following you guys today. I haven’t stopped looking at your videos. I just had a kidney transplant, and I’m seriously ready to start back traveling. I will start back singing on cruise ships in November, and I plan on doing long-term Airbnb travel during my off time from singing. Thanks a lot. Keep giving me ideas, and advice. ❤️

Cartagena no doubt an expensive city but worth it. I celebrated new years' in Cartagena and it was insanely good especially with the fireworks. Also if you ever make it back to Colombia you must try the "Coco Loco" and yes cocadas are amazing.

I really enjoyed all your Colombia videos as we are planning to spend some time there later this year. How is public transportation between cities? You mentioned Uber and the occasional subway. Is there a reliable bus system?
@OurFreedomYears
@OurFreedomYears Год назад
There is a bus system to get between cities, although we never used it because of our dogs. Instead we organized a lot of private transfers (which can get quite expensive). The distances between cities can be large to cover by bus so flights are another option. Once in a city, we used Uber as the safe choice to get around, although Gillian did take the subway a couple times in Medellin and found it to be fine.

Happy Birthday Stephanie!! As an avid follower of your videos I was freaked out by this one as I had just returned from Cartagena two days ago. We, too, experienced the sensory overload and frequently returned to our Airbnb for chill time, but the food was amazing - especially at Carmen and Celele. Great Video!!! One idea to share: you two travel with dogs. Perhaps a video on the “hows/tips” of traveling with pets might be of use to some travelers. Keep up the great videos!!!!!!

Great idea about the dog video...we've been getting a lot of questions about this topic lately. Hopefully we can put one out in the near future.

All of the food you folks eat looks AMAZING, but I always wonder how you manage to avoid digestive troubles that many travelers face! What's the trick--is it just adjusting, slash, not eating every single meal out?
@OurFreedomYears
@OurFreedomYears Год назад
Well, Gillian has an iron stomach so usually she acts as food tester! 😂 More seriously though, we tend to be more confident about trying street food in places where the water is potable. And we always stick with the most popular stands.

170$ a night in Colombia ia like paying $2000 a night for an airbnb in Canada. Would you have paid $2009 a night ? Sounds unreasonably expensive for Colombia.

I did what you did, went on a group tour to the Rosario Islands. Very sour experience. I had money stolen from my wallet in the boat from the drivers. Before starting to dive I realized I forgot and brought cash on my wallet. The drivers told me, don’t worry, go dive. We don’t touch anything. And law and behold, they stole 300 USD from my wallet. I didn’t say anything, not worth the trouble. But a big lesson learned and sour experience from some dishonest people. I found all Colombians to just be after money. I was invited for a drink there in medellin and was expected to pay for the whole group.
@OurFreedomYears
@OurFreedomYears Год назад
Oh no, sounds like a really bad experience. We tried to be very cautious with our money and valuables while we were in the busy city. We felt much more relaxed once we got to smaller communities along the coastline.

Such a beautiful place! Regarding crowds, since it’s on the Caribbean, are they cruise ship passengers coming in for the day? I’d love to go to Cartagena because of your gorgeous video of the place, but wondering if what you showed isn’t typical in terms of crowds? It doesn’t look crowded at all to me. One person’s crowd is another person’s empty streets. I mean, have you been to Disneyland?! 😅
@OurFreedomYears
@OurFreedomYears Год назад
Well, some of the video was shot at 7am in the empty streets before the crowds arrived! We found the crowds of tourists and vendors to be quite thick in the old town. It was hard to make it down the street sometimes. That said, perhaps a seasoned Disneyland visitor would find it all quite manageable. 😂

There are some other places you either missed or didn't get a chance to see like LA cueva del manglar, The emerald shopping center, and the classical picture with the people in classical costume and the women holding a lot of fruits on their heads. Yes very turisty, pickpocketers to watch for. A lot of cruise ships dock there.

Can you flush toilet paper down the toilet? May sound like a strange question, but I Just spent 8 days in Isla Majeres, and that is a huge deal breaker for me. So if your travels take you to some places with non-standard hyenine practices with respect to those of us who live in North America - it would be very useful to share it.

We found that flushing was fine in the major cities that we visited but not in the smaller towns and communities.
