I only realised I was addicted to my phone, after seeing videos like this and I’ve been addicted since about 2013 and I know I’m not the only 1. Sad to say but my life is dull and no work, so I’m constantly on phone and worst part is, I can’t even watch a great show or series, because I keep picking up my phone. I know if I was normal like I used to be and worked, my phone addiction wouldn’t be too bad because I know when working I would not feel the urge and same with when I worked before or am really busy with housework or something/walking dog, I never need nicotine but when I’m just sitting around, I’m constantly vaping. I am going to start trying to restrict my phone time, somehow. It’s a really big problem.

Using it moderately also helps reduce the addiction I am on a computer more than my Smartphone I listen to mainly music on RU-vid since it doesn't drain battery as much all streaming apps I can get on my SmartTV or even watch it on a computer. Hi! I might have found the perfext dumbphone for me and it could be it for you too! I just ordered a CAT S22 flip. It's a flip phone that runs Android 12 (go), so it can have all of the apps that Android Go can run. Its tiny screen is the perfect deterrent, and I'll install all the apps I need (banking, spotify, messenger, maps) and remove the ones I don't need using my computer (web browser, play store mostly). Maybe in the 90s, but by the 2000s if you wanted a phone that just called, texted and stored contacts, you could easily get one that'd be extremely reliable. Combine that with not having to sign into a google/apple account, not having to setup any syncing, not having to setup wifi, often not having to go through an extensive setup wizard at all, and finially FAR better battery life.... they were much easier to use in my opinion. You just grab it, shove a sim in it, set a funny ringtone and you're done. I'll admit T9 is a pain though, but only really because I've learnt QWERTY. Recently I've relearnt T9 and after some practice, it's perfectly natural.

No, I wouldn't. As a recent (one year) adopter of smartphones, I did worry about this "smartphone addiction" people are always on about. I am addicted to social media but, personally, if I have a smartphone in my hands I will get to it no matter what deterrents I have in place. I also will not spend hours on it if I am on my computer. Mind you I am gen z and I have been living with this through my entire teenage years, so these patterns of behavior are very very very difficult to break. So, yes, the smartphone is more of a "vehicle", but at the same time it's what it's DESIGNED to do, to keep you for hours on it. That's why I don't think the term "smartphone addiction" is inappropriate.

What about us old folk, who truly need a #DumbPhone, so we aren't overwhelmed by the technology, but still have the functionality and convenience of having a mobile phone? My guess is THAT is a niche market that is completely underserved, and misunderstood, in the #MobilePhone industry. This is a GREAT idea; where do I sign up?

Personally, it's the people that is the main problem. If you want to use your phone as a dumb phone, then you could; but then how could you use it to send a non-urgent voice message to someone who are in a meeting for example. It comes down to how you could control yourself. There are more distractions around rather than a phone. It's like solving problem, by just removing roads. I could see people who are phone-addicted, but I meant, just stop doom-scrolling, and use phone only when necessary.

What I hate is feeling hostage to the latest urges and notifications. It makes me feel like I have zero self control. I appreciate that we can do a lot with our phones, such as watching movies, reading, conversing with family and friends. But other activities are purely addictive and time-wasting. It would be cool to have a phone that does the bare minimum: phone app for calling, camera for taking photos and videos, maps for navigation, music app for listening to songs and podcasts, a barebones browser with reader mode to read articles, a book app to read books, maybe Messenger since it's the app my family uses to talk. But nothing more.

It's great that people are slowly recognizing this problem. But I would go further: is it really necessary to have a device (even a dumbphone) 24/7? We got in the belief that we need to be available all the time, it sucks. If you real, rarely does anyone call or text anymore.

yes! bring back "the camera phone" era. lol. totally fine with going back to using my actual computer and letting phone be a phone. altough having maps was a game changer for international travel, we did just fine before that😊 (I'm 51 so I grew up differently than my kids who are 31 and 26)

You can give a smartphone to a child just use the technology the correct way there are controls on all smartphones where you can block or limit access to certain apps and the internet and even times during the day when the phone can be used while still allowing the child to make and receive phone call to Parents.

Stop using social media… and you should be fine. Also put restrictions on yourself. There are apps for that. The only way I’m using a dumb phone is if an exact reincarnation of the Motorola Razr or Nokia 8110 (not in their new form, but just like the old look) is connected to my primary phone number (which by the way is still in my smartphone which is in my bag), and I can pull out the stylish Razr or 8110 to receive a call in the bus or subway, instead of having to pull out my smartphone which will definitely end up resulting in a few more minutes of screen time. So, win win. I get to show off my cool Razr or 8110 and I shave off precious minutes of my screen time.

I'm not getting a dumbphone simply because I like having an easily pocketable 4k camera that can take extremely superb videos. If they put a 4k camera in a dumbphone I might consider getting one. And yes I know about professional cameras and camcorders but they don't slide into pockets easily

What I miss about dumb phones was the satisfaction of flipping open or slamming shut a flip phone. Other than that I’m happy with my smart phone. I am not addicted prehaps because I am old and was brought up before mobile existed.

This is fairly old news isn't it? People been doing this for a while. If it works then good, but I think having self discipline is ultimately more rewarding. Kids should definitely not be allowed near them; only for a video call. I see so many on smart phones with it really close to their eyes, and they're completely absent from their surroundings. Their attention span is getting ruined.

I'm 32 and I don't do social media as I have much better things to be doing with my time. I tried a dumb phone as I simply don't need a high tech phone, just a phone that makes calls, texts, takes half decent photos and can make and respond to emails. The main problem I have found, is EVERYTHING is online now and you need an app to do a lot of stuff. Dumb phones did not help me in this respect and I found it a hindrance. Instead, I have a mid level smart phone with minimal apps as its the only viable option. I love life with minimal phone use, there's so much more time for other stuff! Like now where I'm on RU-vid look at DIY videos and have stumbled across this one 😂

I've just come off a dumbphone and got a smartphone. I had the Nokia 800 Tough for years with the Kaios operating system. It was a joke. Lagged and crashed like you wouldn't believe and then Messenger stopped being supported on it, although the Facebook app still worked. It was not available in the Kaios store as a seperate app! I was glad to be rid of it. Now I have a Doogee S100 Pro and it's a beast. 👌

This is not a hardware issue, you shouldn't need a new phone to use an operating system that limits what apps you can use. Although admittedly you are most likely prevented from doing so by your current phone's manufacturer.

only problem with giving kids a dumbphone is that other kids are cruel if I want to school with a standard brick phone back in the day I would have been laughed at by the people with flip phones and slide phones. it was a different time for sure but now days everyone has a tablet or a smart phone I feel like kids would get picked on for having a flip phone when everyone else has an iPhone or a Samsung
