As a coach you have to have plays that counter the doubling down. Move Edey to the top of the box. Have the guy who's man in doubling cut to the basket. Have Edey do some pick and roll action. He ran down to the same spot and tried to post up the same way all game.
What kind of adjustments worked well for you in your coaching career? They have 100’s of plays and options they can use and they call each play on every possession based on what they are seeing- so you must mean something different than that.
Shooting 26 threes against a little team is insane. And Purdue has been a lousy shooting team all season. Drive the damn ball and draw fouls. Purdue plays so slow and predictable. I never see Purdue get fast breaks. Play a zone defense once in a while also! Painter is a clown.
As an Indiana fan, I’ve always appreciated your coverage and analysis of Purdue basketball. Continuing to pray for you, man! Can’t wait to read and watch your stuff again next season!
There’s really nothing left to say. It’s the same crap the fans deal with every year. Beat by double digit seeds 3 years in a row is actually impressive in the worst way possible. Turnovers, crumbling from ball pressure, lack of athleticism, brick 3 point shooting, crappy guard play…we’ve seen this throughout the year, it’s not surprising. Whew, how embarrassing though huh? First round elimination 🤦🏻. This will b talked about for the next decade. Indiana is already making its “FDU” chants for us. Not to mention all the other 1 seeds beat their opponents by 20-30 points. If you r a real Purdue fan, this outcome was always in the back of your mind. I know it was in mine. See you f****** next year.

You mentioned "adaptability". I generally ignore the "fire the coach" bandwagon/fairweather fans. But this is one argument those people have that I can't disagree with. Painter has an uncanny ability to see the problem, but not make the adjustment to address it.
Painters biggest failure as a coach is his inability to continually recruit top end 3pt shooters. Purdue missed 18 wide open 3pt shooters thats inexcusable. Game plan worked, they got their shooters open looks, laughably open looks. And they just bricked. Fdu surrounded the rim and said beat us from the 3. And they lost
First of all I'm not upset with any of our players , yes Braden played terrible same as mason ,the thing that bothers me about Matt at some point in the second half and you just keep jacking up 3pts you have to as a coach you have to change that by telling ur guards to stop with the 3's let's pound it down low , he just consistently gets out coached and I really don't see anything changing ,I'm 55 yrs old I have been watching when the head coach was fred schaus lee rose ,gene keady it never changes with Purdue bigger the stage the tighter we play still my fav boiler 4 life 🏀
@@joshclark2109 Move Edey to the top box, man not being guarded cut to the hoop. Does Purdue not have 2s, 3s and 4s that can catch lobs at the rim? If they don't, that's part of what they need to recruit. If lower tier schools can get guys that can do that, Purdue has no excuse.
Do we hire Shrewsberry away from PSU? Tonight was a nightmare, in a year with so much progress in terms of milestones and overachieving every expectation, and yet in the games in march madness we have crumbled and don't keep pushing the ball up the floor when the pace worked, we try to keep "running the sets". Who cares if it's more freeflowing from time to time, when you have an athletic/physical advantage, that's what you do. A team that only made it in to the field of 68 on a technicality? Really? And clearly the reason we got out-rebounded was because we stuck in man to man, you throw a quick zone at them and they don't know what to do. They were purposely dragging Edey out of the paint so that their guards could go for the rebounds against ours. We looked shell shocked, and immediately the refs signaled it was going to be Big10 tough with no-foul calls on their first Edey hack, and we didn't tough it out. Sorry for my rant, I just know I still have hope for next year, get well soon Brian! Hoping our recruits see this and say "I'm better than (fill in team player tonight other than Edey) and decide to come instead of getting massive NIL deals and going elsewere. Ever Grateful, Ever True.
Something has to change! Painter getting out coached in March is out of hand 16, 15, 13 seeds beating and out played, out hustled, and being the tougher team is just SAD. A zone defense to protect the big is an idea. Making adjustments throughout a season? This is a lost season: No one will remember the B10 only losing to a 16 and that will be FOREVER. We are the laughing stock of basketball & B10
not only out coached but he goes so far as to say 'oh what a great team....they were better than us'. Wait, what? You were #1 in the country all year and their barely made the tournament. You, Painter, made them LOOK great with your crap coaching. FDU is not 'great'.

Brian, I always enjoy listening to your calm analysis of the games. Thank you for pushing through even during your difficult times. As a complete head-over-heels fan of Purdue Basketball, my only concern is for the players. It is so important for all of them to know how much we adore them and how much we love coming to Mackey to watch them play. I have such a hard time with all the finger pointing and critiques when these are young men who have worked so hard, done so much, and wanted this more than any of us. My heart and compassion go out to every one of them and I hope so badly they know how much their true fans are with them in good times and in bad. While winning the NCAA tourney would be great and obviously exciting, NOTHING can replace all the excitement and thrills this team gave us all season long. I am so proud of these fine men and my heart hurts for them. In remembering and honoring Tyler Trent's words, I hope and pray they can find the good in this circumstance and continue to bring joy and happiness to Mackey Arena next season!
Thanks Brian! ?s for Painter- Why was David Jenkins not out there more? They backed off of him every time. He’s been shooting better than anyone. Why didn’t we drive to the basket 75% of the time? They were in foul trouble! Chucking 3s wasn’t the answer. 40yr die hard fan this is rock bottom.
What? David Jenkins played 27 minutes. It was by far the most he's played all year. Painter is loyal to his seniors so he let him be out there nearly the whole game.
As a Syracuse grad and the parent of a Boilermaker freshman, I spent much of the 2nd half begging to see a 2-3 zone. That would have made the points in the paint much more difficult. I may have made the 2nd chance points tougher as well. We needed to pack in the D. I wanted FDU to beat us with the three. I feel terrible for the coaches and players. Early success set unreasonable expectations for the ceiling for these young men. I hope everyone comes back. We need more experience. We need a solid replacement for Jenkins. We need more reliable shooting. I can’t wait for next season.
Thanks Brian for the whole season. Thoughts on Painter teams vs the full court press? Seems like a year after year problem. Easy recipe to “flummox” Purdue for small fast teams like FDU. See you next season!
Suggestions Purdue needs to be able to drive the ball to the bucket when shots don’t fall. Zone defense would have helped if they stayed in an area. Schedule small ball teams in the non conference season
I disagree on not playing zone. We’ve never tried it because it’s “not Purdue style” - well yah, so let’s try to be a little different. A zone would help against small ball. It would keep our bigs in position to play to their strengths. Even if we played in 5 possessions each half. Try it!!!
Without shooting and guards being able to adapt offensively, Purdue will continue in this manner. The one dimensional approach of getting a jolly green giant, have him stand in the lane for over 3 seconds and shoot a 2 foot hook shot is not going to be successful against quick, ball handling teams. 16 turnovers? FDU's guard play sped up Purdue into mass confusion. And the "player of the year" did not take a shot in the last 9 minutes. Hit the portal Matt. Get some guards and boiler up.
Purdue exceeded expectations this year. They started out being a really good 3 point shooting team and then fell off towards the end of the year. Maybe the freshman were wearing out. I expect them to be really good over the next few years as the team matures. As we've seen in college and the NBA. You need the guards and forwards to carry in the post season. Purdue was just too inexperienced in those positions.
I agree with this comment Shawn. It is disappointing but these fans on here are losing sight of what having freshman guards are - inexperienced and put the weight of the world on their shoulders. The transfer guard we had should have continued to step up - like in the BTT - but for some reason was not good either last night. 0 - 3 I think. Is Painter in the hot seat now? maybe - folks expectations are always going up and up and up. It's up to Matt to figure that out...He's well paid to do so and would be the first to tell you that. Players make plays however...
Painter should be offered a nice job in athletic administration. He is a one trick pony as a coach. No adjustments to either his own personnel or the opponent. Adjustments are a necessity for any type of success in the NCAA tournament.
Purdue overachieved all season. Wasn't even ranked before the season. However, Painter is a one-trick pony and needs to be fired. Purdue is the easiest team to plan against. They run the same thing all game long. No fast breaks. No zone defense. Terrible against the press. FIRE PAINTER
Unfortunately this is an all-time new low for Purdue basketball that will always be locked in stone for history to see. This one hurts beyond belief. Everything we achieved this season will be forgotten. We will always be remembered as a #1 seed that lost to a #16th seed. Until we win the National Championship no one will take us seriously and will continue to be made fun of and laughed at by the nation.

Brian first off I Loved watching all the post game videos this year and last year. I told myself after the loss to St Peters that I was nit going to make watching games a priority any more, mostly during the work week. Well I was fooled again this year. It’s the same ole broken record. I’ll always be a Purdue fan, I live in Lafayette so it’s just in me. But I will not watch Purdue basketball next season. Good luck next season and hopefully something changes for the sake of all the fans. Like last year and even though they won the league and tournament this year it still leaves a very sour taste.
I've been enduring decade after decade of underachieving Boiler basketball under Keady & currently Painter. Don't care about winning the B10 outright or the B10 tournament, 2023 Boilers will be infamous for the biggest choke in NCAA history. The university was embarrassed on a national level. Open the damn checkbook for a real tournament coach, pay Jay Wright whatever it takes to take this job. Painter will have another job by the end of the day. Hundreds of schools would kill to hire Painter and make the tournament. I want to see a final 4 and a random championship. Painter will never bring that home.

I wouldn't. I'd rather the team be champions than lose in the semi-finals aka "make the final four" - whoopity doo da. You can't name the final 4 teams from five years ago without looking it up, you MIGHT be able to name the national champion, cuz national champion is all that matters outside of winning your conference. they (*Painter---) had no answer for a lot of things - Maryland, Northwestern, Indiana........it's on the coach, he should be training these guys to fight harder under pressure and intense games. Painter claimed all year his team didn't display enough toughness - yet - how does he not recognized that toughness should come from the leader - him. He's fake tough at best.
Thank you for your coverage! We fans continue to be disappointed in the post season by an early exit from the tournament. What is it going to take to move forward? I agree, small ball matchups are a problem. Lack of killer instinct, possibly. I hope the powers that be take a close look and evaluate closely! It has become embarrassing! Sure the guys, as a team, probably overachieved when compared to preseason expectations, but to have earned a high seed and get knocked out, yet again by a very low seed, is more than disappointing!
the lack of killer instinct comes from a lack of a leader who displays it himself. Painter is meek. Compare him to some of the more confident coaches out there who have their players hyped up and believing, energized and playing FREE. Painter thinks he is always the smartest guy in the room, and what he doesn't understand is how his over strategizing gets his players too much in their head and not enough playing from the heart, many times. His style gets in their way of succeeding.
100%. He’s a guy that lets what he thinks is his intellect define him. Uses “obviously” as a filler word because he’s afraid of sounding stupid. Doesn’t understand the mental-emotional side to the game at all. And you can easily see this rubbing off on players. No other explanation for why previously good shooters can’t even hit wide open 3’s
So some of the team commented this week about the FDU coach’s comments, said it was disrespectful. Well maybe it was disrespectful saying it was disrespectful.
Ok, I'm not a coach, and never played on a team with a coach. Learned bball in the co-rec just playing pickup games. So this is just one guys' perspective. To me bball is a game of hustle. Keady/Painter seem to play a "patient", pass the ball around, half-court game. No fast break, no (or few) guys who can penetrate and score. I just can't see that style of plodding play will ever win the big dance. Works pretty well in the conference, it's true. Our B1G championship will get another banner on the wall in Mackey but isn't it kind of like kissing your sister? You can find an awful lot to criticize about the game, I'm sure. The color guy did say something about the wasted 11 seconds near the end of the game when they took that long to get the ball across half court and then called the timeout. It just all seemed to me like there was no sense of urgency and too much "patience". JMO, and like I said, I'm not a bball genius, just a pickup player. Painter's been loyal to Purdue and you can't just fire him. But I wish he'd give up on Keadyball.
Look at Purdue's record in the tournament since Painter has been here. Players come and go every year, what's the common denominator? What's been the constant every year? Matt Painter! Purdue will never win a national championship and probably never reach a final four as long as the, unable to adjust during a game, Matt Painter is still at Purdue!!!

@@bitcoinisfreedom5265 And we might win a national championship with another coach. One thing is for certain, we will NEVER win one with Matt Painter!!! Painter is a good Big 10 coach, outside of that his record speaks for itself. Purdue did have a great year all while being extremely inconsistent the last 2 months of the season and the most overrated team all season. When you watch an entire team fall flat on it's face like the world observed Fri night, that's not a team or players problem, that's a coaching catastrophe. Purdue didn't get the reputation as the "One and Done Gang" EVERY March by accident.
Painter recruits decent talent. The problem is he boxes that talent up so tightly in the "system" that dudes don't even know how to break out when the system fails, like it always does in March. These smaller schools pull off the upsets because their coaches just let them ball, and that's what it takes in March. Plus garbage shooting never wins😖
Great analysis Brian. I do want to state I love Matt Painter but I think this loss was on him and the coaching staff. They didn’t make any adjustments that I could see. One other thing. I don’t want to hear any coach say “this guy is a shooter” and he constantly goes out in a game and shoots 30% from three in games. I don’t care if they go 15 or 20 in every practice. If they can’t do it in a game they are not a shooter.
I'm thinking that if Purdue wants to go further in the tournament, it is time to replace Painter. It bugs me to say so, but performance in the tournament is not just about basketball. It's also about the institution's image and consistently laying eggs will impact other parts of Purdue's business.
In your recruitment, you need ball handling and athleticism. Failing against the press isn't acceptable. Truth is NCAA allows press to succeed too often, it's very easy to draw fouls against it, yet refs let it go.
Wishing u the very best-I’m not much of a prayer but have been for you. Life is full of uncertainties of which I know you’re aware more than most but trust in your Creator Great job all year-I always look forward to your reasoned comments
You’re analysis seems to absolve Painter and put it all on the players and things out of their control. The core issue starts with Painter and ends with Painter.
Those teams are near big cities and they don't have the academic requirements Purdue does. Indiana high school basketball is a joke. They still don't even have a shot clock.
Well this is the worst loss in the history of Purdue Basketball, I’m not entirely sure how you come back from this. Next season won’t be better, this was a one time opportunity and it’s really frustrating that we didn’t take advantage

arrogance. He thinks he has all the answers when he doesn't. You can see how insecure he is based on his responses in post game pressers ----- he will never acknowledge anything he could have specifically done better - shows how afraid he is to own up to it and look in the mirror. Instead he will make a general statement like 'we got outplayed and outcoached'.
His ego is huge and fragile. Doesn’t surround himself with anyone that will challenge him. And if you do, he will shut that down quick. He’s just super old-fashioned. Like a parent during the 60’s
the game began with Smith getting fouled bringing the ball up, about five times in a row.... totally biased officiating ... but, when his back grazes a guy, it bails that guy out with a foul called
Lack of 3 point shooting killed us, this was the hole issue with the second half of the season. Hats off to Zach Eddy he will be missed, we can’t win a national title without good 3 point shooting

Brian thank you as always for your coverage and so glad to see you recovering well….things that bother me are things like we repeatedly inbounded the ball in the corner to smith with no change….and this whole notion of only smith or only the point guard can take the ball up needs to change, if that’s a matter of recruiting more skill or what I don’t know, but Painter has got find some “interchangeable pieces” as he likes to talk about other teams having.
