Yes absolutely it is. They have so many treasures that aren’t even able to be displayed.

Free to enter as well! I remembers spending 4 days there just to see everything. The hangar in the video use to be used for the RND aircraft. Now most of which is in their newer hangar.

I've been planning my return visit to NMUSAF for this year. This press conference told me everything I needed to know about the scope of damage. So glad to hear the main museum facilities are ok and hoping the repair of the damage of the restoration facilities affected goes well. Thanks for this update!

So sorry to hear that the museum got hit by the tornado, very happy to hear no one was injured Did I hear hey correctly, did they say the stuff on the tarmac was scheduled for scrap pickup? Oh please, there has to be a museum or organization located in the U.S. that would love to have even just a fuselage in there collection. If no museum wanted it, I for one would jump t the chance to get the 104 or one of those recipes sitting on the ramp. Please don’t just scrap them. I’ve been to the museum several times over the years, you can’t find a better air museum anyplace

Some internet searching says that F-104 was probably once a gate guard at Grissom AFB in Indiana.
@dogsnmore
@dogsnmore 2 месяца назад
Close... It use to be part of the Grissom air museum. Sometime back in the late 90's, it was moved to the Huntington Municipal airport (per General Robin Olds order/request). It sat as a gate guard in Huntington for several years. When the Huntington Municipal airport whet through some upgrades and ramp expansions, the F-104 had to move. Since it was/is still on the USAF asset list, the air force museum reclaimed and recovered the F-104. The wings of this F-104 were removed and installed on the F-104 on the pole at the museum. If you look at the color difference between the fuselage and the wings, you can see this. The propeller airplane that was also damaged in the tornado is an A-26 Invader, which is a project airplane of a acquaintance of mine. He sold it to the air force museum within the past year or so. I find it strange that the museum bought this A-26 only to scrap it. Not sure about the logic of that decision. The T-33 that was also damaged was on display at Huntington Memorial park for many years. When the city built a new armed force memorial at the park, they dumped this T-33 and bought a different one. The warbird community was/is not happy about this transaction because the T-33 that is now on display at the park was a plane that was being restored to flyable and was very close to flying. There are still N-numbers on this T-33. Kind of makes me sick every time I drive past and see it.

All useable parts had already been removed from both aircraft to be used on other restoration projects. The corrosion of the airframes made restoring them unfeasible and far too expensive. They were just too far gone having spent decades out in the elements. But, at least their donated parts will allow the resoration of other 104's, T-Birds, and 26's.

The USAF museum loves scrapping things. Don't ever look up the list of all the things they've destroyed...

Guys are super positive about no damage, it looks pretty bad to me. Any part from restoration aircraft are valuable. I hope the aircraft at the main facilities were not impacted, especially Strawberry Bitch B-24.

When I was a little boy, we lived in Dayton. I remember the day Xenia got demolished. Tornadoes are truly terrorizing.

What is more concerning is the horrid condition of the "damaged" subjects. The tornado was only a catalyst.

Glad there was no injuries. Gee, I'm sure my big back yard could give that F-104 a good home. Gotta nice RV covered pad back there be a nice shady spot for a old classic. I could even go get a couple of aircraft jack stands.

.....it's amazing how all these "Karens" whine and moan about the scrapping of 2 planes that already had all useable parts removed...do these people feel that their judgment is better than the experts at the base without even examining these planes in detail?... pretty stucking foopid, imo....
