In elementary school our teacher showed us the mask type message and it started a fascination with codes and cyphers and passing messages along. The main deficiency is that if your mail gets searched and they find the mask it is kinda obvious, so you wouldn’t want to send the two together and if not you need a way to key the mask and message. They used to solve this with letter locking and like tearing a piece that would be included with the other. The problem remains, lose the mask you can’t read the message so you have to hide the mask. My solution was to have an agreement with the receiver that there would be two messages, both look normal and the mask would be identified by either a key phrase or an intentional misspelling, then the recipient would note any words that contain something like say double “s” words or words that come before a semi colon; cut those words out to make the mask for the other message. To me this seems like a very secure method because it would be so innocuous and would stand up to scrutiny more than a sheet of paper with odd holes in it

Oh wow, so the real-world physical placement of letters on the actual page can be the encoded message, rather than like "every 5th letter" (to over simplify). So using the same grill, you could write the same message, with the letters space slightly differently and end up with another message. That is so cool. I love simple encoding methods that I can do, without learning quantum physics or complex math. I would give this more than 1 thumbs up, if youtube let me. I can't believe I've never heard of this. I like "the grill" better. You could do it with individual letters, but it would take longer.

my favourite code is the great cypher developed by cardinal Richelieu (of "the three musketeers" fame). it was not cracked for three hundred years. it's simple genius was having a random number assigned to each WORD of the french language. due to the fact that each number is random you can't just guess what the words were due to their length. and also you would naturally assume each number is a letter, making it just a little harder to get off the mark.

The most diabolical way to do it is to mix this with an enigma machine. The grill only blocks out certain letters that must be translated. the settings for the wheels can even be hidden in the message.

It turns out that inmates in jail can’t really hide a cypher key, so they use these letters to communicate all the time. Instead of a grid or spotlight, they just use every 4th letter (for example), or the last or first word of every line or paragraph. Naturally, it takes awhile to compose a message this way, but inmates have lots of time. Unfortunately for them, jail personnel are well aware of these kinds of cyphers.
