WSLS-TV 10, Roanoke VA Sign-Off and Sign-On 1993

Combined sign-off and sign-on in one video file, both recorded on a Sunday morning in June 1993. Starts off with a Channel 10 News promo, then on to the short sign-off which features the Channel 10 logo descending behind a mountain at the very end. After several seconds of black comes a minute or so of musical color bars, then the sign-on which has the Channel 10 logo emerging from behind the mountains at the start. The sign-on is followed by a music video piece called "Spirit Of Virginia", which was a slogan WSLS-TV was using at the time.

My well missed Hometown of Roanoke, VA. I used to watch these channels as they left the airwaves for the night, Watch when they turned off the star on the Mill Mountain. I will return to my hometown one day. Oh how I miss those times by when I took so many things for granite. Oh to sit & watch the trains for hours, talking to the engineers as they got off from the train under the Jefferson Street bridge. Just thought I would share the things I miss seeing, & things that may never be seen again.

not really Richmond VA did the same thing with Fox except they used a TV Slide instead of the stage color bars. Philly played the hits each morning with bars and music.

I am surprised they didn’t display the NBC peacock next to the 10!! This was MANDATORY from 1995 to nowadays,NBC got upset if any of their affiliates didn’t do this from 1995 until nowadays!!

the color bars and music peice in the test pattern makes sure the video and audio is working proply before they start transmission

The color bars were from a Tektronix TSG-170A (or SPG-170A) test pattern generator.

Thats been tooooo many decades ago! HA HA! I remember when TV was picked up by rabbit ears, and they signed off for the night. Yeah, Im that old... I also remember when Cox Cable started up in Roanoke, MTV and the sorts... wow I thought... Now I only watch Netflix on my Roku... HA HA! How things change...

Well if you UNDERSTOOD communications and how the signal works on the airwaves during the analog years you would know. But I'm not a Radio or TV engineer, either. But I do know how the signal works between the station and home reception. First off, KIL-45... That's their studio to transmitter microwave relay station. What that does, is taking both video and audio signal that is being recorded from the studio and sending the same information for home reception. And 7.0625 GHz, that's the frequency they operate on. Since Hertz (Hz) is measured in Cycles or Waves it translates to 7,062,500,000 cycles per second. That's how fast the signal travels from the studio to the transmitter to the home receiver.
