I love making mods to my $50 WSM. I just couldn't leave it alone. More Mods for my 18.5 inch Weber Smokey Mountain. with these WSM modifications I added a couple handles I got from Lowes, some caster that i picked up at Harbor Freight and some bolt handles I had laying around the garage. Enjoy.

Great stuff. I picked my WSM up for free on the curb. Like new. Now I have some ideas of how to upgrade it.

I'm so glad you are showing others that out of the box products don't always one's need. So change is inevitable.Great video "teach"

I had the exact same problem with my wheels and I removed them and added channel iron like you have. Makes a big difference!

Jim Martin Agreed. Before I put the steel channel on the wheels, the brackets shifted all over the place.

I had that problem. The hole needs to be drilled alittle off center and make sure the leg brackets are really tight or they will curl under the smoker

Thanks. I’m happy with all of them except the wheels. Next time I wouldn’t add those. Too unstable.

Dave - more great tips. I was wondering if you could use high-temp paint to coat the bolts and nuts on the inside of the smoker. Supposedly, the paint is good to either 500 or 600 degrees, depending on the brand, and most smokers are intended to be used in the 200-275 degree range, which is far under the max rating of the paint.

Sorry for incredible lateness, but for those considering the caster mod, they might contemplate going to the garden center to find an appropriately sized plant pot base with wheels. Whether you keep those casters, or upgrade casters, you should be able to use the ring to add some rigidity and stability to the legs.
@daveshouseofbbq
@daveshouseofbbq 7 месяцев назад
Yes!!!!! The caster mod is the one I regret the most. Makes the smoker very unstable.

when i got my wsm years ago the first thing i did was put handles on it, glad you did. dont know why weber did not do this. next thing im gonna do is fig out a way to make a lip on the edge of the lid where is sits down on the mid section, to keep water out if its raining, and the bottom too
@daveshouseofbbq
@daveshouseofbbq 5 лет назад
lead 4s I had heard from someone that Weber doesn’t include handles for fear that someone will move it around with hot coals burning and potentially hurt themselves. Then they’d sue Weber. Thanks for watching.

Love the mods. Always learn new things watching others modify. A tiny tip i picked when building my mini wsm was puttong a wine cork on the vent bolt - makes it even cooler.
@daveshouseofbbq

Lasse's Food and Barbecue good tip. I put some Sugru on the end of my bolts. If you’ve never seen it you should look it up. It’s moldable silicon rubber.

My son doesn't have room for his WSM, so now I have it. Bwahaha. How are the mods holding up? The can in the middle to start a minion burn is almost genius. I give you a 10 out 10 yt points.
@daveshouseofbbq
@daveshouseofbbq 3 года назад
If I had to do again I would skip the wheels. They just kind of make it slightly unstable and not really worth it. The pro port and the new thermometer and the handles are all holding up perfectly well

Thanks Dave. Just got my 1st WSM. I am just a couple inches taller than you -how are the casters holding up now? Think I will do that as well as the vent handles and handles on the side of the body.
@daveshouseofbbq
@daveshouseofbbq 5 лет назад
Holding up fine, if I had it to do over again, I'd use bigger casters to make it a bit more stable
@mmarsha9
@mmarsha9 5 лет назад
Hey, it’s funny, I was wondering up until seeing your video if anyone else had this same issue with the legs moving after the casters were installed. Your install looked very clean but you really didn’t say or show the results of the straps being added on? I might want to do the same thing as I have the 22.5 inch and when it’s full of charcoal, the legs move too much for my liking.
@daveshouseofbbq
@daveshouseofbbq 5 лет назад
I apologize for not showing that. The legs stay pretty much still. Maybe a little wiggle, but barely any. I might have got bigger casters if I had a chance to redo it, but I think with the wider base of the 22.5 that won’t be an issue. Thanks for watching.

Cool mods. Does the nylon in the nuts melt? Did the mod to the caster mod work? Looking forward to seeing more videos.
@daveshouseofbbq
@daveshouseofbbq 2 года назад
Nylon seems to be holding up fine. To be honest, if I did it over I’d skip the casters. Makes the WSM a bit more unstable. Actually thinking of taking the off. Thanks for watching

Nice mods, Dave. I’ve seen the triangular stabilization before, just not in a video. The bending of the legs kind of kept me away from doing this mod. Btw, I finally was able to see where your little map was pointing to - Hudson. My in-laws live in Northfield and I was born in Akron. Though I didn’t grow up there, I always love visiting... during the summer. GO TRIBE!

I know that this is a 6 year old video. What I need to know is how long were those three pieces of metal and what width did you use. I found some nice two inch rubber locking wheels for my 14 inch WSN at Home Depot. I used the Cajun Bandit wheels on my 18" and they had the same problem you indicated. I'm going to "upgrade" to bigger rubber wheels and brace them like you did. Thank you.
@daveshouseofbbq
@daveshouseofbbq 8 месяцев назад
I’ll be honest with you, I ended up regretting the wheels. The added height made the WSM too tall and sort of unstable. The metal I used was just some scrap in my garage but it was similar to this. Your friend has shared a link to a Home Depot product they think you would be interested in seeing. @@daveshouseofbbq Thank you sir. My WSM is extremely heavy. I have a quarter inch steel deflector plate in it, Slowhand BBQ beast basket and two of his steel mesh grates. Add to that two stainless side shelves from Cajun Bandit and the stainless door. I did get two Weber handles to lift the center cylinder off the ash pit. Due to the weight those have proven to be too flimsy. I'm going to have to find something more heavy duty. Four years or so when I was last in contact with you I said I was from Rocky River originally but, now transplanted to Sioux Falls, SD these last 40 years. At age 81 I still run my smokers. My favorite is the Weber 22" kettle Performer with the drop down side table cart. I have an Only Fire 22" rotisserie for it and it makes the worlds best chicken. Thank you for your reply and you take care. Have a good holiday season.

@@daveshouseofbbq seeing these mod videos I'm not sure which direction to go. I have a summit propane, a big horn pellet smoker and check craigslist once in a while for a kettle or wsm. I just threw that out there to see if it could help narrow my search. Thanks for the response Dave
