Every BBQ chef can probably think of a thing or two that they would like to modify on their smoker. In this video I show you how to make mods to an old 18.5 inch Weber Smokey Mountain. I add a thermometer, a thermometer port, handles to the lower rack (make sure you use stainless steel hardware, its safer for you food,) gasket to the door to seal in the smoke, and some expanded steel to the coal grate.
I purchased the thermometer port from www.ereplacementparts.com

I really liked the clever simplicity of the mods, and the honest everyman way you communicated them. Great video. Very funny and relatable bit about your wife's viewpoint. Thanks, from a guy who just bought his first second-hand vertical smoker.

I love it when people have ideas to make things better. These ideas are easy and don't require any advanced knowledge. I especially like the idea for the charcoal grate. I'm going to do this for my Weber Smokey Mountain.

Thanks for watching. The one modification I did in this video that I would not recommend, is adding the wheels. After living with it for a couple years, I find it makes my Weber Smoky Mountain far to unstable.

I wired my charcoal ring to the charcoal grate so I could put it up and shake it. Also makes it nice if you need to dump the ash and you still have left over charcoal on the grate. I used a crisscross with an old grate, it's smaller than the Weber but exactly the same size as the charcoal ring. I think it came from an old Brinkman green bullet smoker.
@daveshouseofbbq

@@daveshouseofbbq hey man great video with some brilliant tips! I've 2 more for ya, the wider weber legs from the newer version bolt straight on and give the smoker more stability and if you tie the 2 charcoal grates and the charcoal ring together with some wire you can lift it our all as one unit. 👍
