In our latest WTF series, we take a look at some of our favorite stars and filmmakers who have seemingly disappeared or altered their careers over the years to the point that begs the question; WTF happened? Now, before you think we're just picking on celebrities or running some gossip rag stuff, think again! We take a fun (and sometimes funny), researched and fair approach, looking at all angles that led our subject to wherever they are now (which isn't necessarily a bad place at all). If anything, it answers the question on where these fine folks went, how they got there and where you can find 'em now.
This time out we explore the career of the legendary Jack Nicholson, who has graced us with a plethora of scene-stealing performances in some truly great and iconic films that have helped define cinema today. From THE SHINING to ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST to CHINATOWN to BATMAN to TERMS OF ENDEARMENT to THE WITCHES OF EASTWICK to A FEW GOOD MEN to AS GOOD AS IT GETS to ABOUT SCHMIDT to THE DEPARTED and beyond, Jack Nicholason has been a powerhouse for the ages, sprinkling his devilish charm all throughout Hollywood since he emerged on the scene. Nicholson has since disappeared from Hollywood, with his last role being in the James L. Brooks dud HOW DO YOU KNOW, which was ten years ago. Where did Jack go? What's he been up to? Will we ever see him on the big screen again or has he officially retired and left us with his film legacy to chew on? All this and more in the latest WTF Happened to...

@@MarceloVeronezzi it's not just that my man i find that Leonardo DiCaprio can be a little eccentric and crazy in some of his role which is relatable to Jack Nicholson acting personality but they also have the same color and buggy eyes, they comb to hair back and if you put their faces side-by-side it looks like you're watching looper 2

“I warned him.” Jack Nicholson once told a story about him doing some pills on the set of Batman 89 and he passed out as once he came to, he was in his car on the edge of a cliff. Perhaps he was telling Heath that it’s a dangerous role that can consume you if you’re not careful.
@ReedRosson1987
@ReedRosson1987 4 года назад
You’re half right. He warned him about taking the dangerous but effective prescription sleep drug AMBIEN (aka ZOLPIDEM). It causes severe amnesia in people who aren’t tolerant to hypnotics or Benzos... and yes jack took it and almost drove himself off a cliff. Anyway he warned the very sleep deprived actor Heath Ledger about taking Ambien. It turns out that Heath took Ambien and he forgot how many various types of pills he was taking (opioids, Benzos, etc.) and he took too many pills and overdosed. Correct me if I’m wrong though. But I’m pretty certain of this.
@VickStarkiller

Reed Rosson that sounds about right. He definitely warned him about something but probably didn’t want to put his business out there like that. I thought it was solely about the role but I forgot about Jack’s drug use back in the day too.

@CaptRobertApril

Jack and Heath had discussed Ambien, a sleeping aid Heath was taking at the time. Jack had warned him about the dangers of that drug, relating how, when he was taking Ambien, in his sleep, he had gotten in his car, drove around, and woke up in someone else's driveway. Considering where Jack lives, up in the Hollywood hills off Mulhulland Drive, a road that's a bit scary in the daytime when you're wide awake, the concept of driving that *in your sleep* should scare the crap out of any halfway sane individual.

Regarding Jack's answer about Ledger's death, I'm pretty sure that he was referring about the risk of getting too deep into the characters psychology. When get into a role, you have the risk to leak certain aspects of the character into your real personality, you can get yourself lost into a character. The Joker is a character with such a heavy, distorted and sick mentallity, that Ledger just couldn't handle. Probably that role reinforced his anxiety, fears, traumatic events resulting on him acting like a joker on his own personal life. People tend to think that acting is only a matter of being extroverted and shameless, but one role after another can easily modify your psychology and personality blurring the line between the real you and the characters, leading to this kind of consequences and borderline actions. RIP Ledger, definitely a magestic acting.

Jack Nicholson’s response to the question about Heath Ledger’s death is likely referring to their shared method acting. There’s a reason why most method actors are referred to as difficult to work with especially when portraying darker characters- they often incorporate aspects of their character into their off stage lives. This combined with the drug scene that is sadly common in Hollywood and personal struggles make for a dangerous situation.

I completely agree with the 2 people above, he wasn't consumed by the role of the Joker, this is all nonsense that people say to create some kind of mystery around the character. All his friends and family said he was cheerful, happy, and his usual professional self during filming. Admittedly he did complain about sleeping problems, but that started way before The Dark Knight, which is why he was self-medicating with benzos. He overdosed from benzos and opiates many months after he'd finished filming The Dark Knigth, and already moved on to filming The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Which is why half way through the film Heath's character changes appearance, and the role is played by Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell.

Jack is a talented actor. He entertains, no doubt. In 1982 I was hired to play a role in a rock opera written by an insanely talented duo of a man and his spouse. I played a despicable and ruthless L.A. gumshoe in the play and sang a song that was devoted to his prowess. Being at times a bit O.C.D. I rehearsed relentlessly for three weeks and the couple gave me a duster (London Fog overcoat) to support my performance. I lived in that coat and rehearsed all of the words until they were in my bones and I effectively grew into the role. We performed the opera segments (the musical parts) at the Troubador in L.A. one night and that was that. It took me weeks to shed the character that I had adopted. "I warned him" is obvious as Jack knew that Heath would immerse himself in the character. Jack is a monument to narcissism. And he is a damn good actor.

That's an idiot's take living inside Hollywood fairy tales. Nicholson already clarified he was talking about Ambien which he claims he warned Ledger about. There was nothing wrong with Ledger's mood while filming. He was skateboarding around, joking and showing pictures of his newborn daughter. Movies are just make-believe. As is acting. Stop glamorizing it as if it were spirit-channeling. There is nothing mystical about it. The few examples whose heads can't take it, rarely die young. They just keep working and get a reputation for being weird and tiresome. Like Daniel Day-Lewis, for example.

Fun fact (that everybody already knows): The studio that gave Tim Burton the funds for Mars Attack (Warner? I can´t remember) ̶p̶r̶o̶h̶i̶b̶i̶t̶e̶d̶ advised Tim against killing Jack Nickolson. Tim Burton showed his respect by killing Jack Nickolson twice in the same movie.

Excellent video; thank you for sharing. He is truly one of the greatest actors -- if not the greatest actor -- of our time (I am 70.)

Despite Jack’s powerful displays of anger and other portrayals of the human condition he always seemed to enjoy himself playing the roles he did displayed as his little smirks. I just hope he’s happy and appreciate his work

That scene with Jack in the hot tub, and Bates stripping down to get in was heart stopping funny.

Jack will always be a top actor. The acid tripping was what probably made him make a decision of staying awake at night and only sleeping during the day.

Yeah, the "Chinatown" sequel "The Two Jakes" is actually a pretty good film, although obviously it's not a masterpiece like the original. The one thing about this movie is that it is actually a sequel to the first one in that it's not a remake disguised as something else nor is it a film using the same characters but having nothing to do with the plot of "Chinatown." To truly understand where it's coming from, you do need to watch Polanski's film first (IMHO.

A Jack Nicholson encounter. My dad was an escort for foreign dignitaries when in some big name hotel in NYC he took his dignitaries into a meeting room Jack Nicholson and Warren Beatty were at the same place same time. Jack asked my dad what he did and why he was at the hotel, then some more folks come in and Jack Nicholson introduces everyone to the folks around the table including my dad and not missing a beat. That impressed my dad.

Jack got out at the right time. Hollywood is truly in the gurgler now. Jack’s made his retirement fund and left us with a magnificent collection of films. Most actors retire and I hope he enjoyed those trips. The greatest actor of his generation.
