A late Saturday night sign-off of Detroit's Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) member station. At the time, WTVS was one of a few PBS stations that was on the air 24 hours a day, with the exception of early Sunday mornings. The clip commences with the closing moments of The Lonesome Pine Specials, which is followed by PBS promos for Austin Citry Limits and two Ken Burns documentaries, Brooklyn Bridge and Empire Of The Air. The WTVS sign-off follows, rendered by the late Paul Winter, the long-time voice of WTVS. The announcement is two and a half minutes long and is chock full of technical information. Following is the national anthems for both Canada and the United States. The SSB film was produced by the State of Michigan to commemorate its 150th anniversary. After 45 seconds of black screen, the WTVS color bars appears with tone briefly before the carrier is cut.
SignOffsGuy sends out a big "thank-you" to Ron Allen of Canton, Michigan for contributing this video as well as the information relating to it.

It was very common at sign on-sign off that stations used both O Canada and the SSB when they had viewership in Canada. WTVS was not the only station that did it.

What about CBC stations? Some of them obviously have viewership in the US, but they only signed on or off with O Canada.

This guy reading off the technical information is the grown-up equivalent of your parents tucking you into bed and reading you a story that you fall asleep during. Something oddly satisfying and comforting. Also I wanna start a band called Domestic Fixed Satellite Earth Station.

The technical maintenance portion of the sign off sounds like it was live. You can hear the mic switch just before Paul Winter speaks. Very rare to have an actual live booth announcer in the 1990s.

Detroit television has a great presence in Windsor. So much so a Windsorite need not learn about Celsius. He can still listen to Detroit weather reports in Fahrenheit.

There have been friendly relations between Detroit and Windsor for many years. With Canada Day on July 1 and Independence Day on July 4, it is usually a long riverfront celebration during the holidays, or at least it used to be, until Detroit was ruined.

WTVS and WWJ-TV channel 4 are the ONLY TV stations serving Detroit-Windsor-Pontiac that have studios in DETROIT PROPER. Everyone else has studios in Southfield (the WTVS and WWJ-TV ch 4 transmitter are in Southfield).

First the WWJ-TV call letters now belong to CBS 62 and have since 1995. Their studios are in Southfield. Channel 4 changed its call to WDIV in 1978. WTVS moved its offices and studios to Wixom in 2005.

I noticed that this is very impersonal, unlike a BBC One or Two closedown. Why is this? The latter was very intimate and sometimes quite humorous. Also, why no play of the Royal Anthem of Canada?
@TimothyOnline
@TimothyOnline 4 года назад
For whatever reason we pre-recorded nearly all of our sign-offs. The Royal Anthem is likely not played because this is a U.S. station, not a Canadian one.
