I just found you on Cleetus McFarland’s channel. Love your exuberant attitude and your son will never forget these moments with his dad you can see it in his eyes and the way he looks at you. Jimmy,, on the T6, check that the wing attach bolts, fittings, etc have been checked. I believe there is an AD on that. Also, check the 1/4” bolts holding the vertical stabilizer, horizontal stabilizer on the airframe. They can corrode to nothing but still look good from the outside. Also, there issa grease fitting in the flap mechanism that can only be accessed with the flaps about halfway down. Lastly, keep grease in the kidney bearings in the prop hub.

My Dad was a pilot during WWII in the CBI theater. He took his final exam in an AT6 at I believe Cal Aero around 1943. The instructor had the stick, went inverted and said "it's your airplane" don't know how long they stayed inverted but he got his wings. Flew 65 missions in a B-25. He use to say flying through flak was like driving over a bumpy road.

‘Intentional spins prohibited’. My old dad was a RAF pilot in WW2, and did training in the US as many did. He told me that one exercise in a Harvard was to recover from a spin, but when it came to doing that it wouldn’t come out. He said that only by adding all available rudder trim as well, did he save himself and the plane. So, it was really good for me that you read out that warning. Thanks Jimmy!

@shootthegunsofhistory431

The T-6 has a float carb, the longest it will fly inverted is 13 seconds, however you lose oil pressure after 8, and the reason it is not approved for spins is it can get into a unrecoverable spin if the CG is not correct
@timgould5104

I believe the instructions in at least one airforce were for the rear seat passenger to bail out if it won't recover. A oscillating pitching motion can start which results in entering a flat spin

I have got 146 hours on a T6 and they are amazing aircraft from my point of view. I trained on them in the New Zealand Airforce in 1969 and did aerobatics, Instrument and night flying in them as an 18 year old. No guns came with that plane. There was never an AT-6 on an aircraft carrier. Some of the Navy designated SNJ’s may have, but not the AT-6. It was strictly a trainer for transition from fixed gear, minimally powered, limited aerobatic aircraft to fighters or bombers. My father was a WWII bomber pilot who trained in these. He said it was a great plane to fly.

Search for "TA-624 T-6 Texan" for images of what an AT-6F looks like with the AN/M2 .30cal installed (it's a lightened M1919 with a higher rate of fire). It wasn't a big gun, but it was enough to teach students firing techniques and spotting. The NA-69 variants were fitted with a larger Wright and got four forward .30's and one dorsal for the back seat, though only a handful were made. A few others were armed with more guns, primarily for other operators.

Guy in Toledo owned a T-6. One Saturday morning I stop a car for speeding, young lady was driving. Her driving record was awful if I’d issued a citation, she would automatically lose her license for a year. So, I gave her a seatbelt violation. An air show was going on at Metcalf Field, now known as Toledo Executive Airport. I’m checking out the T-6, talking to a guy in a wheelchair, who said he’d flown in WW2 and got shot strafing trains and supply lines, causing him to lose his leg. While I’m talking, I hear a woman say ‘dad, this is the police officer who gave me a ticket’. And, suddenly, I thought ‘great, here we go’. It was the lady I issued the seatbelt ticket to. Guy walks up, says ‘sorry my daughter was speeding’. No problem, I hated taking someone’s livelihood or freedom. Guy tells me he owns the T-6 and gives me a tour. Next day, Sunday, dispatch calls me at home and says I had a return call to someone about planes. ‘Tell him to call Toledo Port Authority, they have jurisdiction over Metcalf Field’. He said you gave someone a ticket yesterday. Ohhhhhhhhhh….me: he probably wants me to void the ticket! FIGHT A CITATION IN COURT, not on a Sunday morning! I call him back, to tell him how his daughter could fight the traffic citation. Instead, he says, ‘I got my certification(?) yesterday (some pilots may know what he meant) and I am about to go for a spin, would you like to go’? HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEECCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKK YYYYYYYYEEEEEEAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!! SO, I get to the airport, which is right next to my police station. It was a cloudless sky. 75°. 10am. He gives me the ‘if you hear me say ‘bail,bail,bail’ you jump! If you ask me to repeat that, you are going to talking to yourself, because, I’m not going to be flying this plane. I’ve heard pilots say that all the time. He could’ve said ‘you will have to stab yourself in the eye and sacrifice a small child’. Ok. We were up for about 90 minutes. I skydive, I’m not afraid of planes. It was the best 90 minutes, to this day, in my life. So far. Sliding the canopy open, flying out over Put-in-bay, around Toledo, Detroit, around the lake. He tried to make me pass out by pulling Gs, nope. I was busy laughing. That was 2008-09. So, when I see a T-6, I always think of that day. I am homeless, now, and I would sell a kidney to buy a long range drone that would allow me to fly in the clouds. I have MS and couldn’t get my pilot license. I’m jealous of watching you guys flying here and there. Some day.

Since it was an Air Force trainer with the large canopy panels it may be a "G" model as in AT-6G. If so, you are fortunate as most of those went through a major rework and update during the early 1950s. At that time several bases in Florida had them. Fortunately the Air Force birds had a steerable tail wheel. You will learn all about flying an airplane with a tail wheel and be amazed how important the rudder is as you transition to the T-6. Make sure you have a good set of headphones. Start it up (with an instructor in the back seat) and go bore some holes in the sky. It only burns 26 gph.... That intake fire on startup is not normal. What is normal is to have someone standing by with a fire extinguisher any time you are starting up just in case that happens.

I would happily volunteer time and sweat equity turning wrenches for a chance to ride around the pattern in a T-6. Been an aviation nut since I was a kid and since I dont work in the industry anymore (work related accident lead to amputation of lower right leg) I havent been up in the air in years as I dont know any pilots anymore. Would love the opportunity to go flying again. Edit- We had a T-6 and a T-33 at the A&P school I went to back in 96-97 (NAA over in St. Pete) and we got both birds running before we graduated. My favorite memory is me and another student getting the electrical canopy on the T-33 working again after sitting outside again for so many years. If memory serves me right, my class was the last class to learn dope and fabric. I still have my airfoil project that we had to build from scratch.

Love the video’s Jimmy, but…. Adolf Galland was not Germany’s greatest fighter pilot. That honor belongs to Erich Hartmann, in point of fact General Hartmann was the greatest fighter pilot of all time. Keep the video’s coming Jimmy

Hartmann is one of only two men in what has been described as 'the most exclusive club in the world' - "The 300 Club". There are only two men with 300+ confirmed kills in air combat - Hartmann with 352, and Gerhard Barkhorn with 301. Galland was the General der Jagdflieger (commander of fighters) from November 1941 until his relief in January, 1945. He then commanded the first jet fighter squadron, Jagdverband 44. Galland finished the war with 104 confirmed kills.

Heard that too and sighed. Galland was probably better than most any allied pilot, but he still only was credited with 1/3 of the kills of the GOAT.

I flew a T6 Texan a few decades ago hand built it myself from a kit it was one of the best if not the best planes I have ever flown sadly one day while flying it had an unexpected stabilizer failure and flew the smack straight into the ground. Luckily no one was hurt except my pride unfortunately the plane and all its equipment was a total loss not much left in a pile of balsa wood.

All you can do with an engine fire is keep cranking it. If you don’t, the whole engine can go up in flames! Radials are known for fires like that. That’s why normally a guy will stand by with a big CO2 fire extinguisher.
@Newberntrains
@Newberntrains 2 года назад
Actually not rare for an exaust fire with rotary engines if u flood the cylinders this can happen with cessnas too. But more common with rotary
@canuckwing0195
@canuckwing0195 2 года назад
@@Newberntrains Although there is fire coming out or the exhaust while running, the fire under the engine is from the intake. One keeps it turning over to try and literally stuck the flames into the engine, through the induction system. It is a radial engine not a rotary. Even understanding what's going on, I confess to being a bit nervous when it happens, often happens from over priming. Looks to me like it was running only on the prime and wasn't getting the pressure from the engine pump.

I have plenty of photos, somewhere, of that T6 at air shows and fly-ins around Louisiana from the 1970s and 1980s. Was a friend of the late Joe Hartung in BR who raced his T6 "Boomer" and Joe Foretich who had an SNJ and got me into the CAF when I was fifteen or sixteen. Backseated several T6's and SNJ's, they're a blast. That plane was painted up in Luftwaffe colors in the 1970s for movie work, that was the story I was always told about it, she was a frequent visitor around here back then, haven't seen it in ages, good to know it's still around. Have fun with it!
@X85283

It is painted up in luftwaffe colors because the owners want to be nazis. There are actual nazi flags hanging up in their hangar. I assume those are "for movies" too?

Jimmy on the MIG: You do know it is a total fuel HOG! You can go broke just trying to feed that thing. And also the T6 is not really easy on the 100LL either. Want something easy to maintain, easy on gas, super fun to fly, and CAN DO rolls, loops AND SPINS, ? Check into getting a Chinese trainer called a Nanchang CJ6, BUT get one with the Russian M14 engine in it. Same engine as the Yak 52, 360 to over 420 HP VS the Chinese engine with only 285 HP.
