Y'know, Operation Cottage could make a great horror drama movie. Imagine a group of friends, who got drafted into the war and trained to fight the Japanese in the pacific. Their first battle would be in this operation where they would be split up. When the fighting happens, the main character would spot a few "japanese" soldiers. They fired at him which prompted him to fire again - managing to kill them. When the fighting was done, he would walk up to the bodies and would be in horror that it was his friends, and maybe his other friends that were with him would also get killed during the shootout, leaving him alone.

My Grandad was there on Kiska island (he was in the FSSF) when the allies "invaded". He never spoke of his time there to me, but from what I found of his veterans association recordings he had stated some pretty important facts that make the "battle" a lot more tragic, and ultimately more human. He said that the fog was so thick on the island, that a guy in the boat he was in didn't even see a crashed planes wing that ended up hitting him in the head (thank god for his helmet) and almost knocking him off the boat. He also stated that when they would find Japanese camps, they found that their coffee was still hot, and there was still food in their ovens and over their fires. It was as if they had just missed them. While it is a rather unfortunate battle on Canada and the USA's history, I will say that it wasn't a direct loss to an enemy force, but to mother nature itself.

Another funny battle worthy of a short video would be the "Sausage war" during the Winter War between Finland and Russia. The soviets made a succesfull surprise attack in the finnish rear and managed to get to a position which they could exploit against the Finns in further attacks. However, the soviet soldiers were starving and lost the initiative as they went to eat some sausage soup that the finns had prepared at a field kitchen. As the soviet soldiers ate the sausage soup, a Finnish Major was able to gather a group consisting of cooks, medics and others. With this group the Finns made a counter-attack which caught the, still eating, soviet soldiers by surprise. With the counter-attack the soviets were pushed back, leaving 100 KIA casualties for the soviets compared to the Finnish losses of 20 soldiers KIA. Allegedly some of the killed soviet soldiers still had sausage in their mouths after the battle.

Because of this, when Donald Keene, who was serving in the American army, translated it after the American troops landed, panic arose again, and he sent an emergency message to his home country requesting a plague vaccine.[2] At this time, Keene was suspected of being infected with the plague and was sent back to his home country for testing.

I was working on a compilation of '20s to '40s pulp style scenarios for a tabletop game, and I decided to go with this being a cover story for the island actually having been host to a dormant hive of body-snatching aliens that were awakened by the Japanese combat engineers digging out tunnels and fortifications. Why else would the notoriously stubborn death-before-dishonor Japanese suddenly flee a heavily fortified island under the cover of heavy fog, somehow without being spotted by the US naval blockade, after fighting to the death for every square inch of the adjacent island, and then suddenly the Allied forces who land on the island also begin killing one another? Even today, nobody lives there, and it's actually illegal to go there without written permission due to being a protected wildlife habitat. What I find particularly interesting is that the landing forces reported it was eerily devoid of life, without even a lot of birds (in reality that's probably because the Japanese hunted everything they could eat, since we attempted to maintain a naval blockade to starve them out). The only living things on that island were a handful of dogs, one of which belonged to the US weather station and was then adopted by the Japanese. Reminds me of the opening of The Thing.

@@IAmTheStig32 GURPS, actually, but they were heavily inspired by the Shan from the Cthulhu mythos. The player characters were a rag-tag assortment of adventurers, polar explorers, soldiers, and technicians recruited by the OSS to land on and scout the island before the invasion because the OSS was extremely concerned by the fact that nobody could actually conclusively PROVE the Japanese were still there. If they were still there, then clearly they must have some new way to communicate that we can neither intercept nor even detect, since all radio signals abruptly stopped.

The Japanese were so determined to keep it they fought down to the last man until they were completely routed, Fighting in caves using guns, hand to hand combat, and traps, the soldiers were all terrified they'd have another fight like that. They all went into this operation terrified. It was a wake up call for the US military that fighting in the Pacific would be nothing like Europe.
