Throughout 2008, Jeff Hardy scratched and clawed his ways towards the pinnacle of WWE. Drawing ever closer to the WWE Championship, the Charismatic Enigma was ready to win his first world title. During a feud with WWE Champion Triple H, Jeff Hardy had come within moments of winning the title several times, but he had yet to achieve the major victory.
At WWE Survivor Series 2008, Triple H was slated to defend his WWE Championship against Jeff Hardy & Vladimir Kozlov in a triple threat match. However, on the day of the pay-per-view, Jeff Hardy was viciously attacked in his hotel room. All signs pointed at the returning Edge, who had taken Jeff's place in the contest and won the gold.
Despite being unable to compete for the WWE Championship at Survivor Series, Jeff Hardy was given another chance to win the title at Armageddon 2008. In a triple threat match also featuring Edge and Triple H, Jeff finally won the gold, pinning Edge and cementing his legacy in the process.
A few weeks later, Edge and Jeff Hardy would have a rematch for the belt at WWE Royal Rumble 2009. Towards the end of the contest, Matt Hardy came down to the ring to assist his brother, and it appeared as though Jeff was destined to retain the title. Instead, Matt Hardy blasted his brother with a steel chair, costing Jeff the WWE Championship and in the process revealing himself to be the one who attacked him before Survivor Series.
Tired of being overlooked, Matt Hardy was ready to take the mantle of being the superior Hardy brother. At WWE WrestleMania 25, it was announced that Matt and Jeff Hardy would meet in a No Holds Barred environment, with the winner being able to call themselves the dominant brother in WWE.
