Well, for an American, yeah, I suppose he was. Most members of the British Empire had a fairly good idea where most of the Nations were, they were our Cousins, as children we were taught about all the other People's who shared our King-Emperor. Even as Adults we got a LOT more news from around the globe than any American did. The real shame was the adults didn't keep faith with what they taught us. If there had been some way to remove the racists and opportunists from the Empire, and to honour the claims they made about us being brothers, maybe it wouldn't have broken down. As it is, NZ, Aus, Canada, we all have tens of thousands of people from even the small Brother-Nations living with us, We all have many hundred thousand people who were born on the Sub-continent now Citizens. Canada has about 4 million from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh.

Contrary to what educators of today believe, most of these kids who went to school 50-150 years ago were far smarter and knew a lot more than we do today. Just read some Civil War letters. Those guys were supposedly barely literate and uet their letters alone read like poetry today.

I scored perfect scores in all categories for the Army in 2003. What I wanted was to attend the Army's Defense Language Institute to learn Korean. My desire was to be stationed in South Korean. I didn't reveal my desire to the recruiter. When the recruiter saw my scores, he said, "Wow! Your scores are perfect. You can do anything you want in the Army." He wanted me to sign then, but something felt off in his response. I didn't trust him. I asked a High School friend who was in the Army. He said, he knew a guy that wanted to do telecommunications work. However, he spent the first 3 years digging trenches comm wires and his last year in training for the more technical side of it. Through some online forums, I also discovered that I could be accepted into the language program, but be given orders to learn Arabic and be on some dangerous missions doing translation. I noped out of that. Probably the best decision ever.

That's too bad, because the school at Monterey is the best assignment I had. I spent a year there learning Russian as a Marine. Interrogators rarely do front line work. You deal with POWs after they have been caught and brought to the rear.
@mrkiplingreallywasanexceed8311
@mrkiplingreallywasanexceed8311 3 месяца назад
To the original Comment - hmm, we can't know your true motivations but one theory might be sour grapes. I don't think there exists someone who's been through that intensive language course with the American military that regrets it so.......... To the Marine responding - здравствуйте друг - non military Brit here. I went through many years of uncertainty about what to do and despite my mother forcing me to go see the Army recruiters, I was never serious about it. Mind you, when I mentioned a preference for "the Blues and Royals" and he responded "ah - one of the more refined regiments" I knew they weren't serious about me either!! I think the only way that might have been different was if there had been the same language pathway as you guys have. Incidentally, there was a really great documentary about that here in the UK about 15 years ago .. Quick anecdote for you - in 1975 - when I was six - my parents went on holiday to Moscow. No, they weren't Communists or spies. They were - and still are - utterly ordinary middle class regular people, albeit ones who never seriously struggled with money although they equally were and are not urban elite either . Thus to decide to go to Russia at that time was all the more remarkable, albeit it was, predictably a highly regulated, supervised trip with a stay at the only hotel permitted - the Intourist. I still have their entry card to this day... I recall that me and my brother stayed with our grandmother and recall being collected on my parents' return in the middle of the night. What they were somewhat surprised to find out was that - having won a prize for reading or English or something at my school for which I received a book token, I had asked to be taken to WHSmiths where I bought a Teach Yourself Russian manual - and having studied it and practised, was able to greet them in rather passable Russian if I do say so myself 😂 I think it must run in the family as my brother's second child is now half way through his first year at Cambridge reading Modern and Mediæval Languages. I am, by the way, fully cognisant of the irony of seeming to level even a glancing criticism of the guy that didn't take the opportunity you did....

I guess recruiters end up with civilian jobs eventually. It's nice there is a natural fit for them somewhere.

I'd say that God has blessed this man if he made it through Iwo Jima and is still alive today, as sharp and intelligent as he is at his advanced age as he probably was 60 years ago. I certainly bless him and thank him from the bottom of my heart for his service. And my wish that that recruiter got what he deserved for leading him, and every other young man he lead to believe that they would get to serve where they chose to, instead of being sent right into the hell of the center of the war. You. could say that he and those other young men were incredibly naive, but it was a dirty trick not to just be honest with them. So bless this man, who said he got sea sick (so he had extra misery) for his service and making through the war in Iwo Jima.
