Amazing video! That question was crushing my head for months... I see now why. Those both cameras do have upsides and dowsides of their own. Neither of them upsets you. It's really hard to decide as a newbie videographer. Even though the Fuji has awesome specs - especially on image quality - I think Sony is more reliable and offers a better ecosystem for buying new cameras, gears and lenses in the future. I think I'm gonna go with Sony. Also we shouldn't forget that Fuji is more customer friendly with their firmware updates. (And as a personal situation, I live in Turkiye and Fuji has better distribution, repairing and payment solutions. They really have an awesome customer caring system in Turkiye.)

Great job pointing out the Tascam audio interface for the XH2S! I’ve watched tons of comparison videos or Fuji focused yet none pointed this out.

I own XH2s, I also had some experiences with FX3, not FX30 but I can comfortably say that XH2s is an absolutely amazing camera. Use a cine lens and see what you can get with that camera. The dynamic range is ridiculously good. Fujifilm's color science is one of the best. I can say tons of good things about XH2s. But I'm thinking maybe I should switch to something else soon. Here is why; first of all Proress Raw regardless of the camera you use, is garbage. As long as it's not supported in Resolve, it will be garbage forever. BRaw from XH2s, on the other hand, is great - when it works. I also have Video Assist 12G. I say when it works, because, You get some weird signals sometimes. Sometimes you only see a pink screen and nothing else. So you have to turn on and off the camera and Video Assist until it starts showing your image. Super super annoying. and worse than that, sometimes it starts recording and stops after a few seconds, I think it's because XH2s sends an insane amount of data and HDMI output cannot keep up with that. I tried really expensive 8K HDMI cables and it was the same. I used the fastest SSDs out there with Video Assist. Fastest USB-C cables etc, nothing fixed that problem. And you don't get as same BRaw controls as you get from the Panasonic S5ii. So, either Blackmagic doesn't care about Fuji or Fuji doesn't care about working with Blackmagic to make the BRaw great. and on top of that, as you mentioned in your other videos, there is no native FLog-2 support in Resolve. I have a workaround for that. and the results I get are amazing. But why do I have to make it work instead of having native support? It comes down to the same problem. Either Fuji doesn't want to work with BM or the other way around. And lack of support is what makes me think to sell XH2s. There are tons of camera monitors out there, tons of broadcast monitors etc. I think I've seen only one of them has native FLog-2 gamma built-in. Basically, you don't see Flog-2 anywhere else. As if like it does not exist. Except Dehancer. That Eterna LUT Fuji gives is trash, never use that. You can't tell the quality you get from XH2s with that LUT. Very bad. This lack of support is what makes me think I have a camera that no one else cares. It makes you feel like you're the only one using it. But it's a shame because, compare it with an Arri camera, you would be surprised how close it can get. it has mind-blowing quality. Same thing with the GFX 100 II. Unbelievable footages. Rolling shutter is not as great as XH2s but that's to be expected. I think Fuji should focus on the "lack of support" part more. Work with other manufacturers, Blackmagic etc, and make FLog-2 more compatible with everything else.

I'm still getting reddish/pinkish macro blocky artifacts with F-Log 2, but it might be because of All-I h.265. I'm not super worried about the issues with RAW recording because I don't think there's a ton of benefit to it given the hassles of making it work. But I certainly understand the frustration of it not working as well as you would like if it's an important workflow for you. I'm still struggling with the question of using F-Log 2 for the added color information or sticking with F-Log for the faster readout and more robust support in other applications. I don't know, it's certainly an interesting camera with some real distinct pros and cons. But, honestly, there are always compromises so we just make the best decisions we can and roll with it
@lkylv
@lkylv 3 месяца назад
@@PhillipRPeck Yeah Artifacts could be coming from ALL-I H265 codec. I never use it. Proress 422 HQ is so so good. That filmic grain you get is amazing with XH2s. Never had any artifacts with Proress 422. and I always use FLog-2. Dynamic range is a lot better with Flog-2 in my opinion. But you're right. Using Flog will make life a lot easier in other applications. I'm a huge Fuji fan. I have lots of other Fujifilm cameras, including the vintage ones. I know Fuji is amazing but they don't pay enough attention to filmmaking side of their cameras. For Flog-2 try using CST with ; Input Color Space: Rec 2020 Input Gamma: Arri LogC3(From official Fuji Flog2 papers), Output color space and gamma DWG/Intermediate and another CST to Rec 709, try if you haven't before. It's the best you can get from Flog-2. Very close to Arri. I love what I see with that setup. There is this conspiracy theory that Fuji doesn't want to share their color/gamma science so other brands cannot copy it. Not sure if this is true or not. But I really hope they do work with other manufacturers.
@PhillipRPeck
@PhillipRPeck 3 месяца назад
Thank you for the CST tip. I'll try that out. I wonder if the dynamic range in F-Log would be the same or similar to F-Log 2 if you used ISO 1250... That conspiracy sounds pretty outlandish. It's not like Blackmagic Design is passing out the data to ARRI Log C to all the other manufacturers to copy, so I don't know why it would be any different for Fujifilm

I knew a lot about both these cameras yet I learned more stuff watching this video, like the 14bit to 10bit in the XH2S, the simultaneous and back up recording of it too, and the need to transcode the external ProRes Raw files of the FX30. Thanks for this. Oh! And Michael Bolton must be proud (in reference to the winner announcement music!)

I own X-H2s and A7IV and to be honest, I can't get used to X-H2s but I am not giving up on it. I can produce amazing photos and video. One thing I noticed on photos is the Lightroom worming look in the details. Especially in foliage. When I start pixel peeping, it drives me crazy but apparently it's the sensor. The biggest advantage of X-H2s are photo capabilities and internal raw recording.

I feel you on the Lightroom point. Capture One has been noticeably better for XH2S photos in my experience.

Would love to see a side by side comparison of h.264 and h.265 and ProRes. Some are saying that h.265 has saturation issues of some sort

Yeah, there is definitely something weird going on with color artifacts in F-Log 2 in certain codecs. It’s going to take a bit to narrow it down but I’m interested in figuring it out

Good video. The XH2S comes with a steeper learning curve than the Sony. Both great cameras. I own the Fujifilm and love the 14 bit readout. The extra dynamic range is amazing at this price point. I do wish Fujifilm would make a more video focused variant of the XH2S similar to the FX30… with a built in fan and eVNDs.
@PhillipRPeck
@PhillipRPeck 4 месяца назад
Yes. I'm finding that to be the case as well (learning curve). But a very interesting and powerful camera nonetheless

Any chance you can compare the livestreaming capabilities between these two cameras in a video? I already own x100v so dig the Fuji color science - want to get a video focused camera (hybrid bonus for using interchangeable lenses for photos) but want to also use for streaming, vlog/walk&talk and b-roll (solo creator 95% of time)

I sold the FX30 but I did do a dedicated FX30 live streaming video. I haven't dived into live streaming on the X-H2S yet, but I'll look into it and maybe make a video about it or I might just write an update response to this comment thread. Stay tuned

Thx for video. But you not include price devices. In my store price difference 1,47, Sony 33% have low price than fuji

Price varies around the world, plus the FX30 has two different models. I figured it's easy enough for people to find the price if they don't know already. But you're right, the X-H2S is more expensive than the FX30.
