What are your thoughts on X-men '97?

One of the best parts to me is watching a bunch of men get SO LIVID over seeing Gambit in a crop-top (the 90s, any man who had abs wore crop-tops, and a few who shouldn't have) they completely missed the part where it was show-canon Xavier and Magneto were former lovers. And this wasn't just a single quip, it was and entire season of episode 2. Rogue and Magneto talking about why he chose to honor Xavier's vision in his will, and how Magneto talks about his helmet (which many assumed was a special metal to prevent Xavier from using his mental powers on him) and how it was a metaphor for trying to keep Xavier at a distance to reinforce his own mentality, because "he was always in my mind, just a presence". It was SO real, but if you think about it if you have a friend who is absolutely ideologically opposed to yours and they were martyred for it? And their last will and testament implored you to give up your ideology and take up theirs instead? That is not some simple "best friend" stuff, there is way more to it than that. It was BRILLIANT.

I feel like what we need is more unapologetic cool. Like, so much modern superhero stuff plays the "Oh we're using our made-up names?" kind of lines where they can do as much cool stuff as they want, but then they try to be like "It's okay guys we know this is kind of dumb" and maybe it was charming for like a bit at first but now, we WANT the crazy cool stuff, like Cyclops using his beam to land in the desert like that, and for no one to look at him weird and be like "what?" Just do it, make it cool, and let the coolness last.

I love X-Men! I always been a big fan of them since I was a kid. And this new series reminded me of why I loved the group so much. The most surprising part is I was never a big cyclops person. I never hated him but I didn't like him either. But this series made me actually interested in his character for once. This series was fun for me. Anyways, good video!

I had a similar experience to X-Men as Mann (grew up in the culture of the 90s series but I mainly watched Evolution) but I was completely absorbed in 97. The world and characters suck you in immediately, the lore does an amazing job reintroducing new viewers, & the animation and fight scenes are SO AMAZING!! I was immediately hooked by the end of episode 1

A superb video on the new series, Mann! I grew up with X-Men media in a very scattershot way. I saw some of the movies, then some of 92' series, then some of Evolution, then some of Wolverine and The X-Men, but never enough at once that I ever gravitated towards any one of them as MY version of the X-Men. Even when I later went back and finished watching all the different series, everything sort of mixed together in my head about them. But something I noticed is that each of the adaptations tended to covet a lot of similar Claremont run storylines. Days of Future Past, Phoenix, Dark Phoenix, Apocalypse, etc. They'd each mix them up a bit and add their own spin on them, but those storylines were always the focus. I think part of what makes X-Men '97 so wonderful for me is that since it's a sequel to the 92' series, they've already done all those storylines with these X-Men. This has so far freed them up to adapt or take cues from later X-Men storylines to move this narrative and setting forward while still staying true to the themes and continuity of that original series. It has been wonderful to see an adaptation evolve past the most iconic stories of the franchise, and I am immensely excited to see where they go with the rest of the season and beyond. Plus, they've got Cyclops using his powers in creative ways I'm not sure I've ever seen before AND putting respect on Storm's name. So major points for that. :)

I love the X-men, none of them are my favorite Marvel heroes, but together they are my favorite team. X-men Evolution is really good (plus Christopher Judge as Magneto, yes Kratos/Teal’c), Wolverine and the X-men is awesome, but was cut short. I think the reason why the movies failed is because tv series have more time and individual episodes that can be about other characters as opposed to movies which usually need a central character. Though can I ask what you think of the criticisms the X-men have received as social commentary. I’ve seen tons of people say the civil rights metaphor falls flat because they have super powers and therefore have power and can be dangerous unlike real world minorities who are targeted because they have less power in society. I as a queer person still love the X-men despite this and I still like the civil rights metaphor because they can still be threatened by humans with the right technology. If anyone has responses to this please keep the discussion civil.

It's common that fiction, especially science and speculative fiction, uses the story to address real world issues through allegory. Originally this was done because at many points in history it was illegal to openly discuss these topics - such as black rights, gay rights - even women's rights - so writers used their stories to bring these up and they'd do so through whatever in universe logic they could. A story could be about robots being treated like citizens - but we don't ever look back on those stories and say "that's unrealistic because people aren't made of metal". Stan Lee had openly stated that mutants and the X-Men were an allegory for discrimination in all its forms, and then Clairemont would come along a decade later and add to that - making the allegory more specific, and more writers would add to it as well - but at its core it's always been about discrimination - and to a black reader, or a gay reader, or even a female (or any minority really) reader - even just the vague "discrimination" statement is relatable, even if the writer of that story didn't spell out exactly which minority the X-Men were representing at that time. Mutant Oppression has, is, and always will be a reflection of real world minority oppression, regardless of whether or not a certain type of reader didn't see it, or didn't want to see it.

I haven’t finished your video but already liked it lol. I’m 24 so I was born in the year 2000 and still ofc watched 90s shows from my fathers interested stuff, so I was very much a x men kid. This new show has been beautifully written especially the recent episode had me crying. 😢 You encouraged me to now to check out Evolution again ( I was more of a Wolverine and the x men type). The x men are great because of not only the mutant metaphor of oppression but their unique powers representing reality too. Also every x men episode from the 90s series was so fun to watch and not edgy and dark compared to new shows now ( I love invincible and the boys but they aren’t memorable like x men for me). I miss superhero’s that are fun and still good symbolism. I study animation in college and also find the 3D so well done and mimics the old version. This version makes me into cyclops more (my fav is always gambit, Jean, Rogue and Storm). I hope you do a video on the situation of the creator being fired from being a show runner! Really curious on the aftermath and your thoughts :)

I agree that sometimes they “put us up to speed” in a smart way, but in a lot of instances their exposition feels clunky n overly “technical”. THAT BEIN SAID, they nail the fuck out of the “mutant-social” drama AND the interpersonal drama. Not only dat but they treat the characters w respect n explore their powers in pretty interesting ways. This show lives n dies by its characters n their characterization n THATS THE MOST X-MEN SHIT EVER. The dialogue is mostly great n dat one Magneto speech is the highlight. Yes most of what they got is directly from comics but theres so much merit in their adaptation of each episode’s source material. Just great.

This series is doing great and I love its hitting the story because it’s basing off the comics. I will say this, when 97 was coming I decided to rewatch the original and I have to say I have a new perspective of it especially considering Logan crush on Jean is kinda cringe 😰and the live action movies really damaged the characters image 😅
