The ASDG Super Cub is based on the Piper PA-18 and the various experimental versions of this ubiquitous aircraft design. Introduced initially in 1949 by Piper Aircraft, it was developed from the Piper PA-11, and traces its lineage back through the J-3 to the Taylor E-2 Cub of the 1930s. In close to 40 years of production, over 9,000 were built.
Since then various kit plane, experimental and certified manufacturers have sold direct copies or slight modifications to the original design. ASDG’s Super Cub has been developed to try and represent both the original and the modern experimental versions of the aircraft!
Super Cubs are commonly found in roles such as bush flying, banner, glider towing and for just general fun!

Hi Q8Pilot I enjoyed watching this video and as a real world Supercub pilot I feel I can offer you some information you seem to be after. 1. Skipping to the left on Takeoff. The aircraft isn’t actually skipping left it is trying to both roll and yaw left. This affects nearly all single engine propeller driven tail draggers to some degree or other and the direction of swing is dependent on the direction of rotation of the propeller. These effects can also be added to or subtracted to by a crosswind. I was going to go into a long explanation as to what is happening but found the following in the internet which explains it perfectly.. "When taking off in a tricycle gear airplane the airplane pretty much stays straight on its own. When you reach a predetermined speed you add back pressure to the wheel (or rotate) and it flies off. Things work differently in a Taildragger. First of all you are sitting on the ground in what is at or nearly at a stall attitude so you are starting out with a force called P factor affecting the airplane almost immediately. P (propeller) factor is caused by the difference in the effective angle of attack between the ascending and descending blade of the propeller. Because the top of the propeller arc is tilted aft the oncoming air does not strike the prop arc straight on, but at an angle. This angle causes the descending blade to have a greater angle of attack and to take a bigger “bite” of the air than the ascending blade, the descending blade is on the right (on US built airplanes) and as a result the airplane wants to turn left with the application of power. The second force encountered at power application is Torque. The prop is spinning to the right so airplane wants to roll to the left; this is perceived in the cockpit as a turning force trying to turn the airplane left. Making this worse is the swirling prop blast which ends up contacting the vertical stab on the left side which makes the airplane want to turn left. So there are two forces trying to turn the airplane left and one force trying to roll the airplane left (feeling like a turn). To counter these left turning forces requires the application of right rudder at the same time as power application. How much right rudder depends on several factors; the power of the engine, the speed of the power application and the conformation of the airplane (width of gear, length of fuselage, etc.). Only experience will show how much right rudder to add at power application for any given takeoff. On takeoff the Taildragger should be allowed to accelerate with the tailwheel firmly on the ground until the rudder is effective enough to control the direction of the airplane. Once the rudder is effective the tail is raised a small amount to put the airplane in a climb attitude then allowed to fly itself off in this climb attitude. When the tail is raised, the angle of propeller arc is changed. The top of the arc goes forward reducing the angle. When the top of the arc is forced forward by raising the tail the airplane wants to turn left. This happens because the propeller is spinning and is acting as a gyroscope, that is it is rigid in space because of its spinning speed. Gyros do not like to be disturbed when they are busy spinning, they will not turn in the direction that they are pushed. The force applied to turn a gyro will take effect 90 degrees later in the direction of rotation. The prop is turning to the right so if you push on the top of the arc by raising the tail the forward force will take effect on the right side of the arc and the airplane will want to turn left. So when you raise the tail you will need to add more right rudder. Again how much and how quickly will depend on your forward speed and how abruptly you raise the tail." 2. Electric fuel pump causing engine running issues. The Supercub doesn’t have one! At least not the ones I have flown and neither do they need one as the fuel tanks are in the wings hence above the engine hence will gravity feed in the event the mechanical fuel pump fails. 3. Your starting technique I noticed you out mixture full rich, ran the electric pump, moved the mixture to full lean and then cracked the engine. That is how you would start a fuel injected Continental of Lycoming. The Supercub has a normally aspirated (carburettor) engine so the correct starting sequence is: Full on to fullest tank, mags on, mixture full rich, throttle pump it between once and 4 times, depending on how cold engine is (if just shut down this is not needed), set the throttle open slightly, crank the starter, settle ground idle at 1200 rpm. 4. Stall behaviour Looked pretty accurate to me. Mushing down at low speed and high ROD is all it does when clean. Try it with flaps down and a trickle of power, it makes it slightly more exciting! 5. Approach and Landing Use 10 mph less. It will float for less distance once you flare. Late in the approach in the real world I’m down to 55mph over the boundary fence. Hope this helps.

This Supercub actually has fuel injected Continental Titan engine.
@Jim610
@Jim610 6 лет назад
Which Supercub? The standard Supercub was built with a 150hp Lycoming (earlier ones had 125 & 135hp engines) and quite a few were modified to take the 180 hp Lycoming, mainly for glider towing. If you are referring to the actual aircraft in the simulation it would be a shame if they chose to simulate such an oddball and not the model most Supercub pilots would have flown as only the few who have flown that particular one would know whether it is a realistic sim or not.
@pomaranc747
@pomaranc747 6 лет назад
In the sim it has Titan, I would prefer if it had the Lycoming engine as well, but it is still a great addon. Maybe we will get one in future update, I think I head Rush saying something about wishing that he could 3D scan a Lycoming engine so maybe something is planned for the future.

The swing to the left on take off is prop torque - a very common feature with single engine aircraft. You need to compensate with right rudder/trim!
@Q8Pilot
@Q8Pilot 6 лет назад
You are absolutely right. The behavior in this aircraft is a bit too violent though. I had full right rudder to get it in a straight line again. Thanks for watching!

@AlexFHDVideos2 6 лет назад
You have to remember you have P-Factor/Gyroscopic effect to deal with as well.. Haven't flown a tail-dragger myself but unless you have it is hard to really comment on how accurate it really is..
@fariak135
@fariak135 6 лет назад
Not too violent at all. You usually need almost full right rudder when taking off in a Cub

It is definitely gyroscopic procession, like griphos5 said, but that seemed exaggerated. I am training in a Citabria (but have not taken the aircraft off, only handled it in flight so far) and I have never noticed an effect that intense when the tail comes up.
@RCNordic
@RCNordic 6 лет назад
This is more a XP11 ground handling bug. Some devs have gone around it (IXEG) with overcompensated rudder authority. Would not blame the plane at this moment, more a laminar Issue ;)

Lovely video (as usual...), will buy this bird later on today. I just want to add some constructive feedback: I would prefer to have a "by the book" procedures, means going over checklists (ex: not forgetting to set the Gyro Compass...) and comparing the flight characteristics to RW data (mainly in a SimCoders Rep product). more than that I, was missing better piloting (ex: coordinated turns) mainly when giving feedback of how the plane flies. I've logged 15 hours on this model on selection process for the Air Force Academy, and I remember the stalls to be very quick and nose down to the ground just the way you were tring to get (and not, getting) on the video, it might be a bug in the flight dynamics of the simulated plane) Saying all that I really love your videos and waiting for them every week, cheers.

That is how a real ga aircraft stalls, it’s not as dramatic as some people think. It is actually quite hard to detect exactly when stall happens, so that behaviour looks very accurate to me.

Does the switch on the cockpit lights thing in the roof work?
@kevin190992
@kevin190992 6 лет назад
I can imagine that this aircraft is hard to stall but it is possible, I made the same mistake you made a few times in real life. If the airplane doesn't want to stall you have to fight longer, you should have kept the nose up a little bit longer. Another question: what was wrong with the oil pressure and temperature? The needles were not in the green for the whole flight.

At 10k feet without leaning? That must leave a pretty mean black smoke trail up there ;-) Can you explain the different effects when you perform a "rudder test" (never heard one of those was relevant btw)? Some attention to details would really improve a review, IMHO. Check out for instance flightsim481's reviews.
@Q8Pilot
@Q8Pilot 6 лет назад
The rudder test in a sim is merely to show the fluidity (the way rudder movement is programmed). In a sim it is a very relevant test to show that it behaves like the real thing. Sorry you missed the point. And thanks for watching!

I bought this when it first came out and was very very disappointed. The handling is nothing like a Super Cub. I don’t have a lot of hours on the Cub but I do have a few. The Super Cub is a short field, high approach aircraft which can be dropped in from a high angle by using a full movement sideslip which gives about 1,600fmp at about 60mph if I remember correctly. As you near the threshold you just center everything and flare and it drops calmly on the deck. When I bought this I was hoping to go mountain strip flying and use steep tight approaches to get into challenging strips. It will do nothing of the sort. You can land steeper and shorter in the stock 172 by a long way. When people do these reviews why do they wow over the instrument panel or the paint job but miss the fact that the flight model is so far short of the real thing that it is unsuitable for the job the real thing was designed for. Sorry but please review against the actual aircraft's capabilities not that it 'feels nice'.

Does this aircraft that realistic and reasonable ground handeling? Because the x-plane 11 default taildragger the Stinson is just plain horrible. The worst fight modeling I have ever seen in an fight sim with a slight exception of DCS world's ww2 junk. YES I AM A REAL PILOT AND DO HAVE TIME IN TAILDRAGGERS. I have friends with Stinson 108 time and they are among the tamest. Too many in flight sims think harder always means more realistic. It doesn't!

Great plane but.. er.. where can you go with it that's Adventure qualified? So.. it's all about the Model and Nothing about How the Model Relates To the game. I get it.. You guys have NO Clue what you are doing. No thank you. I want a model that makes the Mission Realistic.

"Game"? We are simulating flight. Not playing a game. If you need a mission, go take a look at FSEconomy.
@siege00
@siege00 6 лет назад
Mission? As in the reason the plane is in existence? That would be to fly and/or to fly to places. That's the mission. Or do you mean it's specific niche? STOL, going places others can't. Flight training in a forgiving plane. Flying low and slow, enjoying scenery. There are multiple 'missions'. Or were you expecting some verbal commands to fly from x to y to z and drop bombs? It's not a bomber. This is a simulator not a traditional 'game'. Not trying to be rude, but trying to inform you and understand what you were looking for. Maybe it's you who has NO Clue what you are doing, what you are asking, or how to communicate what your meaning is clearly. This was a great plane review and first look. Thanks Q8!
