I feel like this new studio is a slap in the face to Tango. MS could have kept 60% of that talent and worked them into other projects support roles. Nintendo does this on the DL all the time and don't have to report massive layoffs because they don't want to lose talented developers. MS and Sony need to learn to be more fluid like Nintendo. There's a reason they are still considered the best in the biz for more reasons than great IP and games.

This is the inevitability of the games-as-a-subscription model of Game Pass and similar services. Starts out great and the initial money rolls in, money/growth start slowing, people stop buying games and instead pay for the subscription for a period of time to play the game they want and then cancel, meaning less money for MS and/or the devs of third-party titles. What are the options? Raise the price of the service to reflect the increase in titles available or stop putting new releases on GP day one, which then angers the subscribers in either case. MS is in a tricky spot here, especially with the COD situation.

Tech finance person here. I think some of the speculation about what studios might close and what others may still be investing ignores the fact that companies are siloed into profit/cost centers, and, when a profit/cost center underperforms the others, in terms of set metrics, companies tend to punish them as an example to others. This is much like a Navy academy Marine drill sergeant wailing on his least favorite cadets or Sony putting the pressure on Bungie (PlayStation only has the two cost centers). You can’t punish everybody at once or it’s ineffective. If Zenimax misses its profitabiity or growth metrics more than the others do (ATVI and XGS) then it must be publicly punished, and that means some studios are shut down. Thus Zenimax is told to close four studios, and that may make no statement whatsoever about the likelihood the same happens to the other two silos. Even if they all miss their targets in the same period, you still can’t punish all of them because that would defeat the purpose of the punishment. It’s likely not about Satya vs Phil at all. The margin impact of those four studios is beyond negligible. The important thing to remember is, while gamers may be about narratives and moods and memes, companies are about profit/cost centers and metrics, and enforcing responsibility for the latter on the former. Now, to be clear, that’s about closures. It does not say anything about which Xbox games should go to other platforms. That’s a lot simpler. All games must eventually go to all platforms because exclusivity is economically idiotic. It’s marketing driven, instead of finance driven, BS, when marketing, in the real world, is just a slave to finances. I guarantee that Phil believes that just as much as Satya does and they’re on precisely the same page. So, yea, sooner or later, neither PlayStation nor Xbox will have exclusives because exclusives make no sense for a mature (as opposed to growth stage) industry, and the value of having a fanboy “community” is actually zilch if you can’t monetize that community more than you could by ignoring it. In this respect, I guarantee you that Phil, Satya, Amy, Hermann, Horoki and Hideaki are in complete agreement.

Granted, one of the jobs of media is to ask questions that seek the truth of a situation, but the Hellblade 2 interview was marketing for the game. That guy was not there to answer political questions, he was there to promote the game. I'd expect nothing but a non-response from him regarding the recent closures.

Add CoD to game pass. Include 3 months of game pass with new Series S/X purchases. Make this the first current gen only CoD. Get some of that market thats still on last gen. The gens overlapping has really hurt this generation for everyone (besides Nintendo)

The problem with game pass is that there no incentive to keep it every month. To my knowledge there are no games that are exclusively available on game pass. Meaning you can’t buy it at all. But on top of that they’d need a banger per month.

Theres a lot of strange naivete in this discussion, I feel, so I'm gonna bellow into the void here for a bit. The goal of game pass is to move the video game business model into license-to-access software (think streaming) and away from selling functioning copies of products (think CDs). This allows Microsoft to control whats available and when, when to resell the same work again and over. Similar to Netflix, this is largely about algorythmical data and in-industry deal-making, as far as any month's selection goes. Its not about customer feedback when youre talking install-bases in the tens of millions. Either way, if most new subscribers only play what most Xbox owners play (minecraft, fifa, nhl, cod) then Microsoft has zero incentive to keep running studios that dont show ever growing numbers to the same scale as their flagship products. As far as investors are considered, creativity is dead weight. I know you at least used to work for a free market libertarian guy but I think you're aware enough to see what's inevitable: monopolisation and corporatization under a free market model leads to less products, less competition and inevitably worse products. A guy making a game is in the game-making business, but corporations like Xbox are purely in the game-selling business. I think wrapping our news and discussion about our love of video games into this weird scene where we should trust corporations and 'talk to them' like theyre people and 'hope they make the right move' as if they listen to anything but the bottom line, is just silly. In terms of making money, the first thing Microsoft should do is fire Matt Booty and Aaron Greenberg. Make all games $70 and the AAA first party titles come to Game Pass 1 month later for Game Pass regular and Game Pass Ultimate gets them in 2 weeks. Release Starfield, Forza Horizon 5, Gears 5, Master Chief Collection on Switch 2 and PS5 for $70. That is an easy 50 million dollars being left on the table. Most likely more than the consoles made last year.

This is lining up for the CoD exclusive in 10 years when all those agreements allowing MS/Xbox games on other services...and if Sony doesn't have a viable competitor they have a choice, allow Game Pass on PS or watch all those CoD players leave the service...that should be the direction this is going in, it would be if I was running the company(after NOT closing down any existing studios, especially one based in Japan). Xbox's mistake in closing down the studios was in not offering those studios the opportunity to go independent...that would've been a better optic move from the viewpoint of gamers.

I think the problem with CoD on GamePass is that any xbox CoD players already are subbed to game pass(for the most part). You aren't going to get new subs from it. You tie your general tier of GamePass with xbox live, so now your mostly online folks are already on Ultimate. And then, the ones that are only on the Core GamePass, are probably gamers that only buy CoD. So you want them to pay $17/month (204$ a year without taxes) for a 70$ game? Even taking into consideration Core price, that would be a pre-tax hike of $96 for them. So you are losing money by doing game pass if thats the only game you want.

Game Pass exists to get you in the Microsoft Ecosystem, to drive DlC ,Expansion, Micro- transactions those are not included in the subscription. The Xbox brand is Game Pass , Microsoft doesn't care how or where you play their products. Microsoft wont go full third party, but game pass will be available anywhere its allowed. That's the whole point of Game Pass to get you behind a Paywall. Relasing some Games later on other Systems, is again about getting you into Xbox/Game Pass ecosystem. Microsoft has a 3.14 Trillion Market Cap right now, they will be fine.

If you carefully read the article about the new "Elsewhere" studio, the only thing we know is that they got "STORYTELLING EXPERTS" who had works on multiples guenuinely good titles in the past but we don't know how many of them they got and it's also tell us nothing about the qualities and the talents from other really important members such as graphics desingners and musics composers, also nothing on the programmation side and engines used. So, at the ends, it doesn't guaranty a futur successfull Tripple A type of game... Not at all. It is just that maybe, MAYBE, we will have a good story in a futur release it's all... Nothing to be very excited about really!

I don't think putting cod in gamepass is a bad thing. At the moment,the Xbox sales are probably the smallest part of the revenue of cod. They get most of their money from playstation, pc and the in game purchases. I think it will grow gamepass, as long as the marketing is spot on

i want xbox to have their shooters with cod and halo, rpg's with bethesda and obsidian, and then a few more big studios that can make games that would be similar/equivalent to souls games, ghosts of tsushima, and the last of us type of games. then the rest can just be smaller secondary studios for games like sea of thieves and hifi rush. structure xbox like this and it can return to the glory days right now they don't really have any big titles, their biggest was starfield which ended up being a total flop

CoD on GP won't move the needle and is more likely to hurt them. The WZ players don't need to pay for GP because WZ is free, the MP players won't spend ~$200 for something they could get for a flat $70 and the campaign enjoyers won't stick around beyond the 1st month. Add in the idea of raising the price of GP and suddenly now you're hurting all of the people that subscribe to GP for everything that isn't CoD. The only plus side in this for MS is getting their share of CoD sales on other platforms but idk how much that will matter in the long run when you consider how they have failed in managing their other 1st party MP games. I could easily see CoD 2025 and onward following the same pattern that we've seen with Halo and Gears.

Xbox is cooked brother. They are making all the wrong moves. And head of Xbox Mrs Sarah gives me absolutely no confidence in Microsoft. I mean they dissolved the only studio that made a good game last year. I sold my Xbox and have no regrets.

I think the solution is to make a legitimate 2 tier Gamepass. Day 1 gamepass then Standard where you get everything 3 months late. I don't play multiplayer games so I don't really care about playing the newest stuff, but I like trying indie titles.

I think the major flaw with the whole "you can pay $70 for it, or come to game pass" thing is, xbox players are the only who dont want to buy games. Sony and Nintendo players have no problem with buying a full price game. And as somebody who plays primarily on ps, i gotta say, if there's something i dont wanna pay full price for, i wish list it and wait for a sale. Sony does a lot of digitsl sales. I just dont see xbox getting people to move over with out high quality exclusives. Especially if game pass goes up in price again.

Most of CoDs money doesn't come through sales. It comes via all the other stuff. I suspect the base games will be on Pass to entice people in but then charge for all the other stuff. I don't play it to be honest so I don't know exactly what they sell but I'm imagining loot boxes, skins, battlepasses ect. In that regard it's a good business model tbf. I don't approve of it but giving people a "free" sample to them get them hooked does work

Microsofts choices of closing studios has already started having a negative impact on them. Especially game pass. Sonys idea to try forcing Pc players to make a Psn account with some of their titles is going to negitavely impact their sales, even more so having 170 plus countries wherevthe games are not available. Shooting themselves in the foot. AAA is on its ass and can see more and more people already embracing the decent indie side.

Even if there is a price increase. It will insure people who play these cod games for years will stay subscribed the entire time. Years worth of subs and huge numbers.

Seeing sales numbers from PlayStation. mid tier games barely break even from cost to sales. So I'm started to understand why it's either triple A games or indie games. There's just no profit in mid tier games.

All these so called rumors on changes to game pass pricing or an extra tier is so wild to me. Pretty much all subs to game pass have done so on the communication and marketing of day 1 first party titles. They can’t now just say oh yeah we have a new tier your current ultimate tier does not include cod or other new games day one. You have millions of gamers that do not play COD so they are affected as well which sounds just nuts it would be a PR nightmare just because of one game franchise. If they would announce something like that I will expect massive lawsuits in the US. The only option they have is to increase prices on the current tiers. The notion of you have a new higher tier above ultimate that would include cod and day one games is not an option from a legal point of view because the current tier already is all day one and should include cod or any other first party by default. Lets not forget the core tier does not include day one by default

I saw somewhere this point being made. Even putting COD on game pass they’re going to make 70% of the money from sales on other platforms. Only 8% of sales were from Xbox. Now if they can get people to subscribe to GP then they’ll make up that 8% even if not all 8% subscribe to GP. And most likely that existing 8% some % are already subscribed so they’re getting money from them already. MS won’t be losing any money putting COD on GP. Don’t forget revenue from micro transactions from all platforms.

I actually think this brand new Polish studio tells there is so much more to the story then the media outlets scream. If xbox wanted to have gone the easy silent route and it was just about money. They would have deleted that plan. Not Tango or the Bethesda studios. And studio heads leaving not a year prior, it all has nda written all over. These studio's where on the choppingboard when the activision plans where made. And greenlit when final dicisions where made. These calls where made lang in advance. A corp like MS works and plans in the future. We only see what they have been doing and know nothing.

They don't HAVE a plan, don't know what to do with COD, they can't run their own studios, they can't preserve their IP's and talent and their reputation is in the absolute shitter, they sincerely thought that Gamepass would be a money generator like Valve's Steam platform where it just sets them up for life. I thourght that Nintendo had a huge hill to climb after the Wii and the Wii U, this is next to impossible unless they sincerely humble themselves and make online play free and remaster some long forgotten OG Xbox titles (none of which is ever going to happen).

I don't care about a new studio seeing as they've downsized their existing studios and The Initiative is the "AAAA" studio they created years ago. I don't believe you can just manufacture studios and make amazing games, let alone efficiently. This, for the same reason you can't just put random top talent musicians together and expect they make a Metallica or Rolling Stones level band. Studios, like any creative endeavor, need to grow organically by people that come together to create something they themselves want to create.

To fix the people unsubscribing after they play a game put a prerequisite for day one releases. Some kind of loyalty program for gamers that stay subscribed. The problem with retention is no penalty for unsubscribing. I know the ones that unsubscribe won’t like it,but it’s a business after all.

I know some people want Xbox games on PlayStation but I hate the idea. It kills the entire reason to buy a specific console. If every Xbox game is on PlayStation along with PlayStation exclusives then why would you ever own a Xbox? It’s sad…
