Elliot, I remember when I was a kid, my dad bought a TOYOTA for 250k RMB in the early 90s, then a S500 for 2.5 millions in the late 90s, and cars like Camry still sold at more than 200k even in the 2010s. But look at them now, Porches has to lower their prices by 30%, Camry dropped to 140k and many don't even bother looking at it. What a great time for Chinese consumers, big thanks to all Chinese automakers and the government for lifting up this industry.
I sat in one a few months ago while in China and was very impressed. The rear looks OK in person but still polarizing, but for the price polarizing design is impressive.
Really interesting. I think you are too hard on the design, I think it looks good. That boot is really practical. If X Peng could bring that to the UK for under £25k then they’d have a hit
Be careful what you wish for. With around 12 new Chinese makes arrived or on their way I can see a time in the not too distant future when there is almost no choice but to buy Chinese. I wonder how the quality will hold up? What if China has a trade war with Aus… again…. all parts supply stopped!!
@@gillo3139too late, over 80% of all EV are Chinese made, so we have been exposed to this issue for several years. As for quality, there are enough teslas out there to know what sort of issue there is for parts. As for stopping supply, when have china ever stopped supply? Stopped buying, yes but not selling. I think you’re being unreasonably alarmist, but you could always buy Korean, like I did even though it’s dearer than Chinese.
@@gillo3139 so, like it is now with almost everything else? if our western hyper capitalist nations didn't off shore all manufacturing to China in the name of paying less for labour, and chasing ever more profits, then that situation might never occur.
If this car comes to North America, it's an extinction level event for the auto industry. The North American manufacturers are living on borrowed time.
@@paulb1951Well first of all it will come to North America - Mexico, Jamaica etc. But longer term such vehicles will mean that US produced vehicles cannot be exported as they will be so far behind modern vehicles. Eventually the demand from consumers will result in this becoming an election issue. Paying $100,000 for a poorly engineered, poorly built vehicle when the whole world can buy better vehicles for $20,000 can't last. Also, according to the terms of USMCA, they can also be built in Mexico so if Trump/Harris block this they're putting the whole North American trade pact in danger as well, further harming US prosperity. Eventually one Chinese company will take the chance.
I bought one for my wife, it feels like a less sporty feel model 3 from Xpeng. Mona 03 has a pink color version and suits young ladies just fine. It is a perfect first car choice for a young couple or a second car for a family.
It's funny, I actually quite like the rear. I can see that it's not good looking in a traditional sense, but it kind of reminds me of late SAABs, which I like. I don't know, I think it's cool
I like the design. The rear is a bit avant garde, which to me is a good thing. I also appreciate the practicality of a hatchback design. Crossovers are ubiquitous and boring.
$16,000 - sounds amazing. But we’ll never get it in the UK for this price. So I may as well stick with a legacy car brand. I tried an MG ZS and it was awful.
I wish reviewers would talk more about the drag coefficiency that the exterior creates than simply how good it looks, or even mention it for that matter. You know, the thing that directly translates to how much energy you need to put into it for how much range you get? I think its funny you compare it to a Toyota as they hurtle towards a Kodak level extinction event along with others.
Where I live (the Nordics, Iceland) you buy Toyota for the dealer service and reliability 10 to 20 years down the line, that still has to be proven for the Chinese models. It will be interesting to see how they do years down the road.
The super integrated production of Chinas EVs might come back to bite you when you want to repair a ten year old car. Combined parts tend to be very expensive to replace.
Yeah the price for Europe you calculated is what everyone expects - BUT sadly, even long before tariffs are even where discussed, all chinese manufacturers added about 100-120%% on top of the chinese price... Examples are the BYD Dolphin, in China around 15.000€, here in Europe it starts from 32000€ and this is what every single chinese car manufacturer is doing and why the cars are failing hard in Europe... Because they often more expensive than even European manufacters like VW, Opel, Peugeot and often even worse in range and charging, driving comfort etc.... And they don't have a service network yet - so why would anyone buy a chinese car right now. I really hope XPeng and the others are changing their really bad first impression they are leaving right now in Europe and start to offer good pricing. At 25000€ this car would be great and sell like hot cake... And before everyone starts yelling: "it's because of European tarrifs" - no it is not, they are just trying to milk European costumers, but we don't fall for this...
You will be surprised by the dealers' margin. After everybody gets a piece of the pie, that's what you are left with. And man, they are going all out with higherups blessings.
Great video, thanks. A BYD Atto 3 Design sells for €43,700 here on the road. Will the lower-cost bread-and-butter cars selling at attainable prices ever arrive in Europe?
Call me a grumpy old man, but these glass roofs are an unnecessary expense that get hot and leak when the seals go. Put a normal roof in there and save another grand.
Plenty of small EVs! Here in Australia there a few good choices at around 20k USD. They are very well since the recent price drops. See more and more on the road
Looks sophisticated BUT you mentioned that its suitable for older people. We are older people in our 70s and find it difficult to get into and out of this low type of car. Older Australians tend to go for suv types with seats that can be accessed without difficulty. It would be helpful to get seat height above ground dimensions. In addition I'm tall as well and find it difficult getting into a tesla3. Cheers
How much a car costs doesn’t stop at the purchase price. In Australia car insurers are about to introduce a new set of parameters to use when calculating the cost of repairing EVs. It is expected that insurance premiums for EVs will increase substantially. With that in mind, calculating the total cost of ownership enables customers to see the real cost not just the purchase price.
Funnily enough UK EV insurance is coming down because they usually are parked at night plugged in secure. New EV’s are proving cheaper to repair and EV specialist repair centres are opening up. The price of the battery packs have fallen 33% in two years to replace and new measures and techniques mean they can check the battery if in a accident and pass it ok rather than a few years back they were scared to warranty a pack of in a bump. Manufacturers have lowered the price to replace the expensive camera systems to the repair centres. They also found out EV car theft wasn’t really a thing. One main member of a car theft gang keeping his identity secret said it all when he said they didn’t like EV’s that usually more difficult to steal and they would rather target ICE cars they can sell on easier and could even break for parts.
@@SWR112 Thanks for replying. I suspect one thing driving insurance premiums here is the problem with Tesla battery pack repairs. That is Tesla don’t repair battery packs. As yet there are no third party battery pack repairers. So Teslas are more likely to be written off. Incidentally Tesla EVs have been the top selling brand here for a few years. I would be glad to see insurance premiums come down but at present that is not likely, in the short term at least.
Yes, we need this in the US for under $20k. It would sell like a cheap Tesla we are waiting on. The looks are fine for the price, but we need cool colors, please.
Living here in the States, the 3 big car manufacturers are hiding behind the government to stifle competition, thereby reducing ev options for American consumers.
Well, it's gonna take 30 years for this car to prove the same reliability as the Corolla. Good luck with that! Until then (30 years) I will be driving a Corolla!!!!
Cars like Xpeng is really great for sure. However, even I cannot "write off" Corollas that easily. They've been around for generations, years, decades and even centuries. They've been repetitively economical, easy to drive, spaciously enough and off course totally dependable. Sure electric motors can turn such tables but mind you Toyotas have numerous of highly dependable parts. Toyota's weakness is not being totally committed to EVs though there are few like BZ4X and in Japanese cities (probably a few) have C+ Pod. All in all I would like to have a good Chinese EV over a Corolla but it's simply too early to say Corolla is done, way too early.
9:09 sarcasm? elliot says good UX performance while the video showing the UX running in stuttery low frame rate 10:48 now we are seeing the UX at proper performance. maybe the previous scene the SoC was throttling?
Pushing EV's ! In the UK 🇬🇧 Reliability, Build Quality, Dealer Network matter ! You still see 20+ year old Corolla's on the road. Will there be any Xpengs on the road in 20 years ????
Sorry Elliot, but how do you say the company name? "Xpeng" as in "X" - "Peng", or "Schau" - "Pung". The country leader "Xi" is called "schi" or "she" in the news. I am not chinese (German) but the way you said it made me wonder "Hang on, is what I learned wrong? This Guy does live in China, so he should know..."
it is kinda hard to believe that they are that cheap... I suspect when it comes out of China to export markets it is either way more expensive as they are increasing quality for exports (as communists have always done) and local cars may not actually have all quality parts, or they are subsidized a lot... I dunno. Yes, I know China has cheaper workforce but lots of place where cars are being assembled have that, it is not just that. And materials and stuff cost money, they will not be free just cause they are from China.
BYD equivalent is crap, and probably not profitable for them. BYD probably gets about the same profit selling the battery to Mona as selling a Qin Plus. The drive is not quite as good as a 3 SR, but it’s close. It can beat a BYD on a track by a mile. Efficiency is far better than BYD, Aion, about the same as Model 3. 30% bigger boot than Model 3. For that price…
The rear profile reminds me a bit Chrysler Copperhead concept. Funny some design from my fellow countryman feels more American than what American does... Strange... Huh
It would be scary, IF it was gonna be $16k....but that's never going to happen anywhere outside China. Probably be at least double that. At which point it will fade into the background of dozens of other $30-40k ev's. Scary is disruptive, this won't be that.
Why is a British man talking about a car that costs $16k DOLLARS? Xpeng don't sell cars in the US, and as far as I am aware nobody sells an EV for less than $30k in Australia. Put simply, where can you buy an Xpeng Mona M03 for $16k ? Nowhere, that's where. This is just hypothetical speculation, and if this car were ever to be exported outside of China, the price in dollars would likely double.
No thanks. Rather have a 10yr old Corolla. At my age, I doubt I'd be able to buy an EV I could trust. The current batteries need to go and until new safer battery tech comes in, I'll always be at least 5 years away from a 2nd hand price I could afford. Potentially my UK Gov. could put me off the road with the current crass 'everyone in EV's' timetable. But then I maybe dead before that, as I was close to being run over by 2 EV's, both within 8 days of each other! Even with the new added sound, they are almost silent still! I was half in the wrong on the 1st one, slightly walking out into a supermarket car park, but did look right to see an EV and stopped 1 metre from being in his path way. He didn't see me and carried on at about 10mph (the car park limit). The 2nd one, yesterday in a hospital car park, I was walking very slowly (feeling I'll) and had to cross a few tiny side roads. I just remembered to look right/behind me when I got to a corner. The driver is supposed to toot their horn when it's that close, but he didn't. He just turned into the corner. Again he was at the allowed speed, but again, I couldn't hear the EV!!
line it up side-by-side with a Toyota corolla as you said that it’s main competition. As to the back profile of the car, it’s got one of the lowest drag coefficient of any EV.
Only the morons still think that EVs are the future. As for a car with no track record and no history dethroning one of the best selling cars of all time is some prime wishful thinking.
I gave you 7 minutes of my life and had to hear how good the car allegedly is but couldn’t hear one feature which the big ones don’t have. The price is a China price, so I don’t care about it. I’m asking myself if you are sponsored by the Chinese EV industry?
I hate touch screens. Give me dials and knobs any day. Interior looks as boring as bat shit. Most likely got a whole lot of bloody useless tech that doesn’t stop pinging and ponging. Yes it’s cheap but what will it be like in 5 years or so. Will retail for buggar all as scrap provided it doesn’t set fire to itself and burn your house down for good measure.
So after silly tariffs and Taxes probably £42k…..in 🇬🇧 UK. We can only dream of such Cars with all the tech for £16k new….The main news here is the battery tech is getting so much better and cheaper to offer a car like this.
Probably. Somehow on their journey to Europe, chinese cars gain a lot of weight moneywise. Don´t know what they´re eating on the Trip. We can only dream of the chinese Prices...
Good chinese market car, chances of it doing well overseas, very gray area, " sorry your warranty is no longer valid due to sanctions and existing state of war" even MG is losing its shine here in the UK due to warranty issues and delay in parts. Dont misunderstand me, they are making excellent value high spec cars, i just dont trust them
I will never buy a China EV or ICE car unless I get a 10yr warranty. I own two 20yr old Toyota pickups and they still run like a dream and parts are readily available.
I just watched several of your videos and frankly your criticisms on the design of cars are not at all relevant. And here too. Sorry but you are not good at judging design 🤷
