MOBA or multiplayer games in general divide its gameplay in 2 things 1. Fundamentals 2. Gimmicks Fundamentals is whatever Style you play theres a mechanic you universally use. In fighting games, its movement, attack types, footsies, grabs. In fps, its aim and movement. But that vary per game. Gimmick is the exclusive thing you do with that Style. In fighting games, if youre a shoto, you play like a shoto, if youre a grappler, you play like a grappler. In fps, its the gun classes. The difference in LoL and Dota is Dota has more fundamentals, than gimmicks. The gimmick of hero gives it its unique design enough to distinguish itself from other heroes. The fundamentals are so huge you can essentially play a hero anyway you want but still havea gimmick prevalent enough to give you an edge on other opponents that they have to think of a way to counter. And in turn, you think of a way to counter that counter. LoL is the opposite of that, the fundamentals of LoL is so small,and the Gimmick is so concrete. To he point where if uses fundamental counter to your gimmick, you cant change that because of the limitations of your gimmick, which is overwhelming your entire gameplay. Let me put an example. Dota has minimal damage type scaling with abilities. If an abilities base damage per level is 100-150-200-275, that is its damage through out the game, thats its gimmick. The enemy now have to adapt to that whether its physical or magical, and you will adapt to that with amplification or cc to get the edge. Then the enemy needs adapt to that again until one of you will lack the resource to adapt. Thats why you lose gold when you die, to set you back, cuz its easy to adapt a new strat if you dont lose income. Take a basic hero like BOUNTY HUNTER. BH gimmick is invis, crit on hit, track, and damage (q). BH has a crit every 4 sec, and has invi for initiation. He build bruiser items like deso, satanic, and bkb. He now has armor pen, lifesteal, armor, more hp and magic immunity. He is a bruiser with invi and crit. He build an ad assassin that can insta kill you the moment you see him. He can go divine, deso, e blade, dagon, and sheep stick for cc. Or he can skip the divine cuz its risky and just go mage bh cuz his q is magical. These are viable builds for BH. There is nothing wrong with these builds and you an change it anyway you want, you can buy a dagger, you buy drum, vlad or pipe for teamfight. Thats he fundamentals, and you still have a solid gimmick to play around with. On league, we have Yasuo. Sure, runescan be a bit loose to work round. But essentially, you re getting a rune that works with his gimmick. Yasuo is not an assassin that deals immediate damage or immediate cc. He has no AP scaling (no i dont consider E), so you can only build items that give AD. So right now you have a melee ADC that has no cc set up and your dash needs minions and has a cd. He also has a double crit scale and atk spd scale that alters your build so you would have an advantage. So now your first item needs a crit and an atk speed. So not only did it remove AP items as a viable build it also removes AD items that DONT HAVE CRIT AND ATK SPD. he had a buff, where after you buy an item with atleast 40% atk spd, and reach lvl 10, you will reach a q with 1.33s. But that doesnt change that his first item is very limited. And when the enemy builds a randuin and thornmail. He cant do shit if he has no sustain. Now league heavily focuses on matchup for gimmicks instead of matchup for creativity and skill expression. Thats why nerfs and buffs heavily effect LoL than Dota. Updates affect LoL's gimmicks to the point if their champ is viable or not. Dota force you to play differently through fundamentals, LoL forces you to play differently through gimmicks.

What I observed in LoL is you just usually throw skillshots like a mad man during clashes. In Dota, you value the timing A LOT because a fraction of a second could mean the game. The synergy of heroes and their dynamics in Dota 2 is just WAAAAY better.

I used to love league but I realized that because of the fight aspect of league the other aspects got a lot worse over the time, like xqc said, itemization died in league, the map gets little to no change because the simplicity of the game allows a lot of abuse in the jungle traversal. I just found that dota 2 is more diverse gameplay wise THANKS TO ITS COMPLEXITY. I can win as a support by denying enemy core farm, i can win lane by pulling the lane to keep my core safe or I could also do it the good ol league way by beating my enemy with my fists.

I have around 2k hours on Dota 2 and just two months ago i started playing league just to try it out and what not and honestly i had so much more fun on Dota 2. I must say league is way easier of a game but i didn't realise how toxic league players are holy every game theres multiple people inting and flaming eachother actually insane. Just yesterday i was playing norms, YES NOT EVEN RANKED, and the enemy adc was perma typing in all chat stuff like "trash kill yourself", "your garbage actually uninstall." Clearly that guy didn't have a fun new years. I never experienced that in all-pick unranked in Dota 2 and if i did it was very mild and most of the times just kinda funny. Sure, people will also flame and int in Dota but i just feel im general that game has a slightly better community around it. One thing i hate is how league players treat new players it actually pisses me off how much superiority complexes these people have when you are trash talking level 1 players in norms. Shortly, one thing i absolutely can't stand in league is that whenever you get an afk you will basically never be able to win that match, but in Dota 2 you get compensated with the extra gold if they abandon which still makes it possible to 4v5.

I quit DotA 2 years ago because it was the most toxic, shit-infested game I have ever played, and I have been gaming for 25+ years. I haven't even considered getting good at an online multiplayer game because of DotA. I exclusively play single player games now. Even *I* know that League is fucking garbage compared to DotA. Dota 2 has few players because it takes longer to finish, has a higher skill requirements and most heroes aren't humanoid which generally won't appeal to kids. LoL also has great cinematic trailers which attracts more people into their games and Dota doesn't make any effort to advertise the game.

Sometimes i dont like how xqc is so vocal but knowing his gaming instinct he really nails the dota league debate. People kept defending league but lets be honest, league is for kids and adults defending who defends it against Dota are just not using their brains. I mean I play league and Dota 2 and i pray tell you Dota is so freaking difficult in comparison to league.

I've played both games with equal total hours. Dota takes the cake for its complexity, itemization, importance of timing and teamwork unlike LoL which feels a bit lacking. You just throw your skills like a madman on a single enemy and it doesnt matter how your team is doing in a teamfight as long as you hit all of your skills on a single enemy securing a kill, others are just collateral lol. Cant feel the teamwork in LoL + the map is so boring since it had little to no adjustments over the years unlike Dota which do have map changes every few updates for new strategic points. Item builds arent flexible and are locked within your champion's main role unlike Dota where you can build everything as long as you and your team needs it. Fucking based xqc im following now. Which game is better? Is subject to personal opinion. Which game is harder? Dota 2 is definitely harder. You can see base on number of current players, Leage has way much players than Dota 2, just like there are way much farmers than theoretical physicist.

There is also BATRIDER, a hero who's Q (Sticky Napalm) slows down your turn rate which makes a lot of sense because it's STICKY, that for me is not unnecessary complexity, that is genius.

Honestly I think it's a double edge sword both for dota and for lol. LoL is pretty simplistic and has a mobile version, so riot has way more potential new players. Dota on the other hand has a lot of mechanics that make the game interesting and challenging but for a new players it can be very complicated, so I guess to each their own.

Honestly one of the best opions xqc has ever had, you can fully understand league by playing it for week and then it would all come down to playing with the current meta whilst dota is such a more complex game with more complex mechanics in warding, teamfighting, items etc

played league in 2016 and manage to get diamond half a year and quit in 2020 because of same old mechanics and item builds for every role and stupid meta. but for dota2 been playing that game in 2017 but quit later that year because of complexity, but now 2021 I've reinstall the game again and manage to get crusader for almost year and stilI to this day I'm struggling to understand the some heroes and maps but it's fun once you get used to the challenges.

I've played both and I can tell you that Dota 2 is more complex which makes it harder for people to get in. League is easier to get into but definitely is a faster pace game and requires faster reflexes. I have like 1000+ hours into Dota and 100-200hrs on League.

Same with stamina bar in every dark souls game, it forces you to think every attack and make sure you have enough for dodging or blocking adding depth to the gameplay. With out it you just hack and slash without any strategy. Its not just for the sake of being difficult.

Complexity goes to DotA (making it more fun) Amount of heroes/champs goes to LoL (160-124), but the fact that you have to unlock them is so stupid which makes me give this point to DotA too. "b-b-but you have to unlock complex h-h-heroes in dota".. just open console and type "dota_new_player false", to open console you gotta open properties, in launch option type "-console" and console is automatically bind to \ Tournaments? DotA. Skins? DotA. also you can choose specific items instead of whole sets. Creep/Minion mechanics? DotA (blocking, pulling) sure league is more flashy and faster, but you can easily take off the "faster" part (turbo) Fun games that are unranked? DotA. (Turbo, All random, Random draft, Single draft, Captians draft, Immortal draft (option in custom game/lobby), 1v1 mid, Mid only, the entire "Arcade" section and alot more modes in custom game/lobby that I forgot about.) Itemization? DotA. You can build almost anything on any hero and it'll work while in league your item build is locked to the champion you're playing, if you try something new you lose. Teamwork and Strats? DotA. League? you just press QWER and pray you win the fight. DotA? proper timings, placements, items and so on. Map? DotA, obviously. even if you give league the complexity ("more fun" if less complex), its just 1 point against everything else. DotA is better. Blaus talks a lot of shit on DotA, but if it wasn’t for DotA he wouldn’t be where he is today. If Eul never made the DotA map Riot would have never existed, Blaus would have never worked there and met the OTV people and started his streaming career, who knows what he would be doing but I can guarantee him it wouldn’t have been as fun. People use metric data, and connect it with individual biases. another example of this would be like saying Chicken is the best animal product, because theres an abundance of chicken on the planet, and i enjoy chicken therefore i'ts the best animal product. The fact is that League is a more simplistic game, and can be enjoyed in a different sense and scale than Dota 2. likewise dota 2 is a more complex moba, and therefore can be enjoyed in a different sense and scale than League. Arguing that turn rate is a bad game design, is also just weird. a game design is designed to illicit a form of gratification, where league design philosophy might be instant gratification therefore quick gameplay = more fun. In dota its the opposite. the gratification, is delayed untill you time everything perfectly, therefore more slow gameplay = more fun. and this coincides with the balancing of the two games, as dota is usually, a longer game, and therfore, more mentally exhausting than league, but more satifying in the long run, as more principles can be applied to the gameplay. meanwhile League's gameplay is focused on GO! GO! GO!, so it is more instantly rewarding, and has an easier time getting players hooked on the core gameplay over the details, as the case for dota. TLDR: Dota 2, and LoL are better games in different regards. and using metric data to justify individual experiences is just stupid.

I like dota and csgo more, but no doubt after playing valorant I know why people like league of legends, it doesnt matter which game is more complex at the end of the day as long as you can have fun with your friends. Riot deserves credit for making fun games that don't feel as serious.

At the end of the day saying which game is "better" is pointless as it is subjective. We can measure universal things like the complexity and popularity of the games, but these have no bearing on whether the game is objectively fun because fun is subjective; naturally fun is the most important factor in which game is "better" so it's utterly pointless. However, of course Dota 2 is more complicated in pretty much every way. LoL is literally a washed down version of Dota 2 where pretty much everything was just ripped from Dota. I play both games and have fun on both, but if we are talking about the true high skill cap, complex, overall more advanced game then Dota 2 wins there easily.

There was a fairly recent youtube video about 5 dota pros/ex-pros vs 3 current LoL pros play off in league and the dota pros almost won. In a game where most of them have NEVER played before. Think about that. League was so easy for these dota pros to just hop in and learn pretty much immediately, one of them even won lane against one of the league pros. I think that says it all. I want to see 5 league pros even come close to that in a 5v2 or even 5v1 for that matter, but we know it would never happen. This is coming from someone who played a ton of HoN, played league since 2009 beta and got Plat in s4 before quitting, and is currently 4.5k in dota. Still trash in all games but decent enough to know the meta/follow pro scene of each game.
