I mean they kinda say this every year tho. I remember they said this about 2016. And time has just shown that not to be true. The freshmen class cypher is usually a poor representation of all these artists skills anyway. You get a group of artists together that have not much in common and probably havent worked together much, and you have them freestyle on a beat that doesn't fit any of their styles ofc it's gonna be awkward. It really just goes to show how far out of touch the industry is with the music.
XXL has fallen off for years now, they don't attract half as much attention nor get top tier acts whi reject been on XXL(something that was unheard of before). These days the mass majority of people have no idea when the issue is released or who most of the acts are, I mean XXL literally beg gimmick rappers and flash in the pans to appear.
bro this fucks, i hoped on for your drake v kedrick stuff but your vibe so good I had to stick around and I'm already finding fire artists from you, keep it up!
2016 was definitely the worst cypher, but most of them went on to really grow to love the music and are now genuine artists. Lil Dicky was easily the best rapper in that class, but his passion was comedy 1st
Bro, do NOT put that bad energy on Kenny Mason. I been wanting dude to blow since HIT dropped. He is one of the most well rounded young artists of the generation, no question.
Lucky point is not valid at all……XXL is a business that runs themselves the same way they always have if you sign up for it you should know what you’re expected to do…..six flags has rides and water parks you don’t go there and complain that six flags doesn’t have a rocket ship to take you to space cuz they never have ever had that…..you sign up for xxl and accept the offer expect to rap and expect a cypher like 🤷🏽♂️
Six flags, amusement parks in general, constantly rotates rides and other attractions to FIT PUBLIC INTERESTS. Because people get tired of the same rides. No business survives without adapting to its environment. Horrible analogy. Especially since in this case Lucki is saying if you’re gonna stay the same stay all the way the same. Pick rappers that fit the format. They can’t have it both ways by keeping the format the same but changing the type of rappers. In your words if six flags took all the “rides and water parks” out and replaced them with “rockets” they alienate the original customers of the amusement park and offend the rocket enthusiasts by assuming they can launch rockets without proper infrastructure. No one “signs up” for XXL they get scouted. The company picks them they’re in full control. Pick rappers with a love for the skillset
@@_FLWRS I hear what you’re saying but you’re not going to tell me they do not have a choice they are not forced to accept going to XXL because I’m sure that they do and regardless if you feel as though my analogy is poor the idea is still the same you cannot go into a business the historically has not changed their format to accommodate you especially when they are known for what the are known for ie a freestyle cypher and then you try to discredit the business they are familiar with what XXL wants and if it’s known that the internet truly rules your image then you have every reason to decline the XXL and continue to drop music per your own accord…still like the content keep it up but I do not agree 💯
You’re confusing two different groups. The freshmen are not the audience they’re part of the product. The audience is tired of the format and Lucki is apart of the audience. The audience is done with XXL picking rappers that don’t have skills that align with the format and then having to sit through garbage more and more each year. Which XXL didn’t have an issue with because they were making money off of the clicks. Now the amount of freshmen backing out increased and XXL was the first one to make a statement about it. Freshmen backing out has always been a thing but now it’s gettin out of hand. Like I said they want to go on the platform just to say they did it but in large they do not need XXL to build a fanbase anymore.
I disagree about the format. The class literally has the answers to the test from the previous class and some still fail the exam. This exposure is a good thing, especially if they pass the test. Not knowing every member of the class is the point, with completion of each segment of the current format it allows them to connect to the audience and possible gain a new fan. We’re discussing it (the artist and XXL) so I think the “marketing” is working.
I disagree. The tests you took in school are not the same as the ones your parents took. They change with the times. Makes zero since to scout non lyrical rappers then be surprised when they crash and burn or don’t want to do something based around lyrics. The discussion this year hasnt been about the freshmen. It’s been about how horribly ran the segment is. Its overshadowed the freshmen’s performances. I don’t believe “any talk is good talk”. XXL is about to earn themselves obscurity at this point.
Most artists share the same themes and subjects... It's often more about how you say something than it is what you're saying. They're energy on a track, personality in the lyrics, there are plenty of ways to differentiate. But theme and subject isn't a common differentiator between artists in the same music genre. Flows can be differentiating though.
@@_FLWRS his whole thing is he makes ironically trash music, and sometimes puts out actual music. It’s a joke that’s funny, but it is only that one joke.
XXL should still find rappers who are well-rounded or rap well, because there is no reason why rappers should be AFRAID TO RAP. The freestyles can be rehersed, you don't even have to go off the dome. The freestyles and cyphers should be culminated by collabs, put together groups that want to make a track(s) with each other, have them make a total of 8 songs. Make a video for one song per group, release a freshman EP. Show their creativity in every way possible. If they can't rap they kill it in the EP, if they don't structure songs well, they get collab work to help develop them.
I don’t get why XXL won’t give like 1-2 slots to lyrical rappers. I don’t dislike trap and whatnot by any means, but PLEASE give us actual spitters as well. It blows my mind that Redveil and Kenny Mason have yet to make a list.
We have exceptions like Jid and Denzel but the majority of rappers nowadays wanna be crooners which is fine but they can’t even spit a hot 16, every new class has less and less MCs that aren’t cringe or lyrical miracle
I have high hopes for Maiya the Don. She was invited to the All Women's Cypher by Latto, with Monaleo, Flo Milli, and Mello Buckzz, and that was magical.
I don't think you've ever been to Boston... Roxbury(New Edition's Home), Dorchester(Four Corners), Jamaica Plain , Mattapan, North Boston, South Boston, The Back Bay, Fenway-Kenmore... Shout out to all my Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Cubans, Cape Verdeans, Chinese, Haitian, Jamaican, Italian, Irish, & English... One of the greatest groups of all time came out of Boston.
No I’ve never been to Boston. I’m sure there black people there now but historically that’s not our area. It always been low pop, it just shocked me lol
@@_FLWRSBoston has the 17th largest metropolitan Black population in the United States. Also has the largest percentage of foreign-born Black residents in any large metropolitan area. People just think Boston is a bunch of drunk Irish people not pronouncing their R's... IT'S ALL GOOD THOUGH...! Boston's book cover it's always being looked at but not the pages inside. 🫱🏽🫲🏾✌🏽☘️
I’m already stuck in my ways. I listen to who I listen to. I’m in my late 20’s. I like who I like. I have over 8K songs on Spotify, and I listen to maybe 20% of them (though I partially blame Spotify for pushing the same artists in my playlist. Meaning I think the ‘shuffle’ is rigged and not random). The newest artists I listen to are That Mexican OT and BigX. I listen to OT more, but less than Smino. Not to mention, Alternative Hiphop and R&B are my favorite genres. Shoot, I still listen to Maxwell’s old albums.
I gave all the freshman’s a listen, i thought there is a lot of potential in this years list, i been bumping OT & Big X for near 2 years now but Scar is a dope MC, & i can get jiggy with Lay banks
Amazing Video, another Banger fr Man, you are so underrated. I love watching your videos. They are very entertaining and well made. I know you will make it big soon, keep grinding, and keep up the good work. Much love ❤
Also fr fr I saw someone say Hunxho is 25 and aint no way. That man 38 minimum... dog if you look like that at 25 you gotta leave the substances alone my dude or youre gonna look 80 at 40
I got my haters license last year and I’ve been setting up to hate on you since channel exploded… let the games begin. I’ve been in this room, thinking about how I’m gonna hate on you. For months and all I came up with was this comment …..😅
shit im not even known like that but IK i could do better then most or all of the list, it sucks people dont take hip pop seriously anymore. "its just fun" its just TRASH you can have fun making music without it being bad
I can understand where your coming from but thats way too harsh and its a bit mean spirited. I feel like their trying their best and to be frank they are very young so they will need time to like develop their pen, let them take their baby steps
I feel like lil Tjay is the only recent xxl alumn that i even regularly listen to and honestly thats mainly just Told Ya cuz shit slaps. I keep thinking Grandson will get a freshmen class run and then nothing. Idk i feel like xxl just dont got the draw it used to. Like to the point i was surprised bigxthaplug was on freshmen class cuz like. I been seeing him it feels like everywhere.
Kenny Mason probably wouldn’t want to be involved with xxl even if they wanted him to be a part of their freshman class. Just my thoughts from seeing him in interviews and on tour
Yeah idk man Scar is definitely better than everyone you listed after her except Big X & Ot i think it be so dope if Scar did a track with OT they can probably do a really dirty rough riderz anthem
Rich Amiri tried 2 do what one artist always does every year, not do shit at all n jus use xxl for clout. Problem is, he was way 2 loud wit his exit, that jus shows how atrotuis xxl nowadays is when rappers dnt even respect it enough to show up n stay there.
This is the first year where majority of the list has atleast one viral tik tok song which doesn’t automatically equal an rapper. I understand they need popular artists but there’s a reason most fall off after their class.
14:57 thats a trash take, i think Kendrick proved to us that hiphop heads still care about lyrics, we want real ones who still spit on the corner like its 88’ in the yonkers, we want mofos who swing on mofos, we want chains snatched & niggas scared to come round here
